I saw these reports coming out yesterday and I wondered. Would it have made more financial, and developmental, sense to have made this game as an expansion pack for FC5 and not a stand alone game? That way they could have kept in a lot of the things people miss from FC5, like having two GFH. The could have sold it for 20-30 bucks US and maybe had a lot more sales. Combine that with a serious drop in the price of FC5 and maybe have some bundled special pricing for both. Would that have made for more sales revenue than developing and selling a stand alone game?
I have been wondering if it was "designed to fail". Basically kinda like an experiment of new idea's just to see what worked and what didn't (which could potentially benifit future entries in the franchise).
FC5 sold millions in it's first week of release, and that doesn't take into account profits from silver bars, and post-launch sales, and DLC sales. So Ubi made a LOT of money from it. Which means they could afford New Dawn to not be a big money maker.
The only problem is that if I'm right about New Dawn being little more than an experiment, then it's shamefully and unfairly overpriced.
As the article says, it doesn't include digital sales which these days are a much bigger number than physical sales. Also, it was released on the same day as Metro Exodus and that would have had a big impact on both titles. It is surprising though, that such a massive seller had such relatively low interest on what is essentially a sequel to fc5. And that was before some of the negativity from fans.
I think it is worth the 39.99 for me, but I do think Ubisoft wanted to try a few mechanics to see if they would work in Far Cry. I do hope for a more traditional game when Far Cry 6 releases without the tiered system.
If this spin-off used the same mechanics as FC5 do you think it would have sold better?
I read this this morning and thought on it off and on today. You may be on to something. Ubi needed research on "changing things up" for the next FC game. Sooooo, why not a low budget game with all kinds of crazy ideas in it, and see what is liked / not liked. Don't do very much advertising as a small sample of "real fans" is what's needed. Price it to recoup expenses and see where the wind blows. It really does make business sense, but is it ethical???
Yeah, it makes a lot of sense. If you read the comments so far, there really is a LOT of feedback of what works and doesn't; and what's being missed from other FC games.
