Rickvs64 without doubt survival gives us some good and sometimes painful stories to tell.
I would still be alive if I had not lost a Seond Chance life by deciding I wanted to make sure I saved a vid capture of my earlier close encounter with the Sabretooth via the PS4 share button. So you really do have to play through the occasional bug or glitch. Also if I had not been afraid of losing my pet inexplicably when doing some climbing I might have had a companion to at least distract that cursed Cave Bear. Still I should have stayed well clear of any bears when so close to regaining my Second Life so I was stupid too.
Well that is the Primal life. Feel like I should change my name though to something like Masochistic Suicide Merchant
In my newstart after gathering the green leaves - thinking I was playing a normal game - I was pushing it and ran into a Brown Bear early the one that seems scripted in at a certain place nearby. Thought I could kill it but it went awry so I had to run. Got a few bites out of me but I managed to heal each before dying. Actually survived via leaping off a rocky ledge into the river below. Half expecting to miss or to get ate by a crock.
Anyway when I returned to my cave and decided to save I discovered I had accidentally started another Second Chance game rather than just a basic survival game. No way I would have been that bold if I had realised that I was on a new Second Chance playthrough. Yes I am losing it.
My too obvious advice to any Second Chance player is: try to stay out of stupid tricky situations like that unless you have a spare life cushioning you or are a Masochistic Suicide Merchant. :D

Currently on my fourth expert no hud permadeath play through. First one I got about 15% in and got destroyed by a rhino. Second playthrough I got killed on the first story mission to get leaves because I was over confident facing a solitary wolf. Third playthrough I got about 25% in and got killed during one of the side quests to find hunters in a cave populated by a couple of cave lions. I was ready for one, but not for two at once. Now I'm sitting pretty at 9% on my 4th playthrough on expert no hud permadeath, and I don't feel discouraged at all. In fact I feel more determined. I love the weight of every encounter in this permadeath mode.
My takeaways from my previous failures: 1- always have a source of fire and bait ready to fend off predators, they are way more deadly than any humans because they can pursue faster than you can flee. 2- traps work wonders for hunting big game like rhinos and sabretooths , but set them near water so you have an easy escape if they don't work. your first trip south will most likely be down "rhino alley," and they do not mess around. 3- rush the extra health skills before anything else, that should be self explanatory.

There is no way I could cope with permadeath. I got killed by a bear very early on. I'd just tamed the white wolf and we stumbled on a bear and he got taken down while I ran away. Then like a fool I went back to try and help him.
After being despatched and respawning I thought what would it be like if I had to start the game over again. Man, no way.
But I dislike respawning nearly as much. Why can't we have the option to load a checkpoint when we die?

Not too discouraged Septicgiraffe, in fact ended up sticking with my new Second Chance game. The fear and the rewards of earning a new life I feel brings something special to the action worth the occasional pain. To some degree I am just mocking my own occasional stupidity. Sadly I lapse and am not the most consistantly good player for example: in the instant I keep forgetting you can use bait to distract angry predators.
Overall I am really very pleased to have the survivor mode and very happy with Ubi for giving it to us.
Human_male great thing is you can take or leave, mix and match, the new mode options depending on what sort of game you prefer. To me the spawning is still a bit cheap in the non survival game partly why I decided to keep playing second chance - despite occasionally doing stupid stuff and dying.

Hi Guys,
I started a new game a few days ago, on Second Chance, Hard difficulty (I'm too noob in combat for Expert).
So far its ok. I learned a lot from previous experiences. Currently at 20,85%.
Some additional experiences in addition to the previously posted ones:
-After you have a the White Wolf, go a for a Cave Lion.
-With your Cave Lion, you can get a Bear: find a Bear, command the Lion to stay a bit behind. Lay a Trap then throw a Bait for the Bear. Install a spear into the Bear's forehead, then you have to try to Bait him again. This time able to Tame it. The Trap and the Lion is there for backup, if anything goes wrong.
-If you have a Bear you are able to do smaller side quests, like protect, escort, ect. Bear also offer the best deffence for you in the wilderness! My life get so much easier with him, I always have to warn myself to be cautious.
With your Bear, start to discover both South and North, till you get some decent weapon upgrades and arm yourself up. After theese you are more prepared for the storyline missions and for taking outposts.

The problem is - I don't trust having a beast by my side all the time.
Sure it would make exploring in Survivor+Permadeath a whole lot more safer, but it's your typical "Bugs get in the way of gameplay" Ubisoft kind of scenario. I'm too scared to keep my best beasts at my side at all time because I can practically guarantee they'll randomly fall off a cliff, die, and then I won't be able to call them in during actual time of need like a difficult campaign mission.
-
Also, the beasts almost ALWAYS impede taking over an outpost undetected. They will join the fight regardless of you ordering them to stay away, alerting the camp and throwing a solid sneaking plan out the window. I've still managed to do it a couple times by flanking the enemy while they're engaged, but it hindered the process for sure...

Hi Guys,
Yes, both of you Rick and Hortys are right.
I forgot to wrote in my previous post that I micro-manage my pets.
If I change terrain level (eg slide down a slope, or climb up one level, or crossing a river), then I dismiss my pet, until I get a bit away and have some open room to resummon it. With the bear however you can cross a river too.
Also, you have to dismiss the pet, whn you approaching an outpost. Ordering it to stay somewhere behind in the bush worth nothing. As you wrote they will end up in making carnage. At least this apply only when you would take it by stealth. In an open assault pets could b useful, but you gett much more less XP in case of beast kills and full scale war, instead of the stealthy way.
And XP cause Skill points, that you need even more in Survival mode, with Permadeath.
With these methods I stil have all my pets, and didn't lost any. Without these I had the following annoying stories:
1., I slided down a long slope, and discover that my Cave Lion said farewell
2., I summoned my other Cave Lion at a riverside, and somehow it appeared on the other side of the river, then became immediatelly the dinner for 2 abretooth tigers. This was the first time I've seen 2 sabres together.
3., I left my White Wolf in the bushes while I would liked to deal with some Udams. The damn wolf charged in, then get killed. By the time I reached it it was over, cannot save him.

For a game so focused on having pets, I would've thought they'd put more work into making them fun to use and with a wider variety of commands. MGSV:TPP has SOOO many more options you can give your dog than anything you can do in FC:P... it's sort of embarassing really because MGSV's focus isn't centered around the companions but the system there is 1,000x better... Its also a massively bigger game, though it did have a much longer dev cycle and budget I'm sure...

Hi Guys,
Just an interesting discovery I just made: I died at 29.75% on Second Chance, and left only 1 final life. I became very cautious to not die again, until I progress 3%, but was close to a Wenja Bracelet.
You know every now and then, when you collected enough, you get a reward.
Back at the time during my game on Normal mode, without Survival, It was usually a skill point. But now I get back my Extra Life after I picked up the Bracelet! Despite of my progress was only 30.06% by the time I collected the Bracelet, so I was far away from 3%.
Its a new info for me at least that you can get back an extra life if you collect eough collectibles. Great, beacause sometimes to progress in the main storyline is very challengig :)
