Since the game has the ability in allowing 3 players to co-op, and we are literally just getting started in learning this game. I see no better time to join in, like there is now.
Hope you get that pain taken care of. Otherwise I would strongly recommend getting some handicap controllers. I've been seriously tempted in either making or buying one myself. I've done a couple already with some 360 controllers and it's really not hard to custom fabricate. With the time, know-how, tools and materials. (patience, willingness to do it, and seeing it through)
You'll probably want something with a comfortable contoured shape of your hands natural resting positioning. Along with the buttons and triggers being accessible with as little movement to your joints as possible. There is lots of variants.
I wouldn't want you to give up gaming because it hurts too much.
