Light Settings
hello all, i have seen many people asking about lights. Mainly the problem with light turning off and/or on in camera view. I hope i can explain it in words what works for me. Here we go.
I will explain it with an example you can try to test if you did it right.
So take a point light tool card and set range to 3.00 and hang it above your start checkpoint then take another CP and set it at a distance where the light turns off in view.
Offcourse turn lights of both checkpoints off first and make the track dark so you can see the point light clearly.
Adjust your CP distance so that you have a marker where the light turns off. Set the distance so that you see the light turn off just before you reach the CP.
Now the magic part :P.
Take a dummy object place it next to the point light tool card then glue it to the point light. Then select ONLY the dummy object by holding L1 and drag it untill it is halfway between the start CP and your Marker CP. Now Select ONLY the Pivot point with holding L1 and drag it to where you placed the dummy object. Now test track and drive slowly and you will be able to reach the cp and go even beyond it whitout the light turning off.
You can then adjust the placement of the pivot and dummy object even further to extend the time of the light being on.
For example if you place the pivot and dummy now above your marker CP it will no longer turn off in view offcourse this also depends on whether or not you have a object or a wall etc. but you can adjust it to work in pretty much any scenario.
Hope this helps out some people that are frustrated about lights like i was. And i wonder if the redlynx design team uses this technique.
Anyway this trick works for lights behind you aswell as in front of the rider. 1 thing i want to add is that there is a rare occasion where the light will still turn off when you do not want it but hard to explain why it happens. In a track that i made called Alienated if i lift my front wheel above 75 to 80 degree angle the light went out that is hanging in front of the rider but stays on aslong as my frontwheel does not exceed that angle. It is at the second CP when you are standing on that big metal chainlink thing from fire in the deep DLC.
Almost forgot to mention that you can change the light range in the point tool card and drag the dummy and pivot further for bigger rooms. I think the maximum range is about 11.00 or 12.00 never tried to exactly find the point where to far is simply to far lol.
Experiment and think logically and you will find all sorrts of ways to use less lights just remember that the point of origin of the light remains where the tool card is hanging
so that is why it is importantant to place it first where you want it then set range and do the magic part.

The range of the point light matters in the sense of what you are trying to light.
But you don not have to worry about it turning off because the game does not care where the actually point light is after you glue a dummy object to it.
The game sees the the pivot point and dummy object as the point light position but the light still shines from where to point light is.
So aslong as you adjust the pivot and dummy position at a point ahead of the rider in the camera field of view the light stays on by which time your rider is already far out of the distance of the point light when it turns off.

Great find, thanks for posting! :D I believe this works for effects too, think I saw it in an editor stream.
About the wheel raising issue... could it be because your raising the physics bubble? maybe if the dummy object was below the level of the rider that might help. Just a guess :confused:

I really hope you guys could understand my explanation so if you have a youtube account maybe you could make a small video of what i was explaining in the OP.
Making things visual makes it just easier to learn for others that might not speak english. Or incase my english is rubbish lol. Since Teri had misread i might not explained it as good as possible

I applied this idea to effects that have the same issue and it solves it! Man I wish I had known this 12 months ago :(
