I was just messing around with screenshots in Unity. I'm not really the type of person who likes graphical updates to old games, but I can't help but wonder if they could ever make a remake of AC2/ACB look like this.

Gosh, It would be amazing. I can only dream of what the AC2 Venice Carnival would look look the the current-gen consoles. Imagine all the fireworks in the night sky, passing gondolas, flags blowing in the wind and crowds of celebrating, dancing civilians. It would look beautiful.

Yes those are from Unity (using Ezio outfit). The game sure has beautiful graphics :)

Unity is on a level as far as graphics are concerned. I don't think Ubisoft have received enough credit for the beautiful game they have made.

Here are some screenshots I took on the ps4. Taken at the Palace de Luxembourg incase you want to have a look yourself, its got a stunning interior.

It would look amazing, but it would take more than a "graphical update" to produce images like that for the older titles. The problem with AC1 and AC2 is that it was built in the first phase of the Console Shelf Life, so they didn't push further with the games graphical systems. Though incrementally in the annual release you see improvements from AC2 to Brotherhood(crisper, smoother, less cartoony but still cartoony) and then in Revelations, the game looks the best and it has the prettiest and most colourful city in the Franchise.

AC3 and BLACK FLAG came at a later stage with the new Anvil engine where they had more faith in the newer systems and how to push it. Black Flag is already on PS4.

They would have to remake the games from scratch to produce images like that for AC2 and Brotherhood, that is do the monuments again, fix the scale and crowds and everything. It would take a big amount of effort.

Yeah, I essentially meant "with Unity's engine", including all the new animations, crowds, 1:1 scale etc. But I wouldn't want them to replace the old parkour system and stuff like that. I know it's impossible and I don't really mind, since like I said, I don't like it when companies remake old games with new graphics. But it's fun to imagine what the old games might have looked like with today's technology.

This exactly. I believe if remake were made the impact on graphics will be like from Liberation vita to Liberation HD, which is a decent improvement but not next gen in any way

Obvious limitations of the previous engine(s) notwithstanding, are there good, consistent 'mods' to 'enhance' the appearance of the older games?

I'm aware that people have been modding games like GTA4 and Skyrim to look absolutely stunning; has there been much of a modding or enhancement 'scene' for AC? I guess not.

SweetFX is good for some small things like making the colors more vibrant and textures sharper, but nothing big like improving character models.

I think that after Unity, the chief shortcoming with the graphics on the older games is the lack of 1:1 models of monuments.

As much as I loved ACR, I was somewhat taken aback by the varying scales of the monuments -- some looked significantly smaller than their real life originals, which I could tell because I've grown up in Istanbul. (Most notably, the Egyptian Obelisk in the Hippodrome -- that thing is *huge*, a *lot* bigger than what we had in ACR. In fact the whole hippodrome [only the two obelisks remain today) should have extended over a much larger area], and the remnants of the Roman Aquaduct.)

I hope they keep up with the 1:1 models in Victory.

I dunno, the scale in the older games never bothered me. I think characters' faces look the most dated. Especially AC2/ACB which had really cartoony models.
