Sorry Oleg, but I really dont get it...
The P-40's damage model is way to fragile for a plane of this legendary toughness...
Just a single mg bullet on the engine, and thats it....Please take a closer look on its DM

Another observation . Can we be a little more specific?

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

me and another bf110 beat up a p40 rather badly, i wouldnt call it fragile :P, it is an inline engine to dont expect it to be stronger than any other.

Inline engines are known to take a single bullet and die. It happens...now unless something has radically been changed for the P-40's DM, which I suspect it hasn't, then the plane can soak up damage like few others can. Its an impressive airplane, but don't give it more credit than it deserves.

All inline engines were vulnerable. Some more than others...the P-40's probably wasn't as bad as the P-51 or the Bf 109 but its close.

I tend to agree w/ Cpt Rio.
I tested a number of AC in the only way I could think of: by parking them on the runway and shooting them with an AI M-16 halftrack with 4 .50 caliber MG's.

For the most part, there were few surprises but the P-40 was one of them; just a fraction of a second of firing, and the ship was no longer airworthy (based on hud messages).

Almost all other planes I "tested" (I fully admit this was hardly scientific)could sustain more damage, the notable exception being the P-80, which exploded like a bomb the INSTANT it was hit.

Fw-190F8 was the toughest bird.

P-47 was next, followed by ki-84.

The P-40 was historically a very tough AC. Probably more so then FB indicates. Just my two-

i have seen nothing to think that the p40 is weak in il2 tho it might just be the overly weak 20mm cannons.

Well...I think the p40 is relly tough.
Ive had my plane riddeled with holes and still being able to fight.

Another time i was chased by 3 zeros who sprayed me completly to rubbish and i still got away after a long chase and even managed to crashland at my runway. It was impossible to bring it down straight bcause the rudder and aileron andflaps where shot off at one side.

Once I got most of my tail shot of. The fin+rudder and one of the elevators. I was able to limp back to my field and managed to land it with the last remaining elevator and ailerons.

This sort of thing I havent done with any other ac....p40 is tough allright http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

P40 is the last plane I'd want to shoot down with anything less than a Mk108. Really tough bird to down. I flinch at the sight of P40s.

Indeed the P-40 were tough. Same experience as above mention, P-40 can take lots of hit from the 6. But disadvantage against bombers. Unless attack from high or side.

Speed is the KEY.
