I was looking into purchasing a new joystick and a throttle and rudder pedals.

My question is should I get one of those HOTAS setups:
Thrustmaster Cougar
Saitek X45
or just buy all the componets seperate:
CH Products Fighterstick
CH Products Pro Throttle
CH Products Pro Rudder Pedals

I'm willing to dish out the money for this because I love flight sims, but this joystick I have is getting old.

first off all the sticks you've listed are good choices- it all depends what you want to acheive.
I'm biased as i own a cougar and love it:
advantages:-
1) it appears as a single unit to windows/games (rudders as well if plugged in via cougar)- usefull for other sims that only 'see' 1 joystick- eg falcon4.0
2) programability- nearly anything is possible
3) support- http://cougar.frugalsworld.com/- IMHO a MUST read before you choose
4) upgradablility) hall sensors (no more spiking pots ever!), different gimbal/spring setups-expensive(?) but if that's what you want....
5) feel- it definately doesn't feel like a plastic 'toy'

disadvantages
1) it does have some 'issues'-see 3 above- but mine (and i think the majority) worked pefectly out of the box by following the instructions.
2) spring strength is heavy (personally i like that)
3)learning curve- can be daunting at first- but again see 3 above
anyway, sales pitch over/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif , good luck with whatever setup you choose

Maybe you should look at the Top Gun Afterburner by Thrustmaster... It's what I use for IL2FB. 8 buttons and a hat, detachable throttle and two ways to access the rudder. Personally I like the rocker on the throttle for my rudder. I also own a Cougar, mainly in anticipation of LOMAC. Refer to Bolox00's post on the Cougar, but I find it a bit overdone for IL2. Good luck with your search.

Good hunting,

Thanks for the info! I was checking out that site and it's greatly helped me with what the cougar is all about.
