View Full Version : I can't use TS. So, should I bother to go online anymore?

I have tried TeamSpeak and while I found it a great tool, it ground my rig to a halt. I went from 25-30 avg fps to 10-15. The Normandy maps went down to 8 fps. It's impossible to play any 3D game at that speed.

The fun has been rudely yanked from online play for me since the only server out there worth playing anymore is War Clouds and the lone pilot has no chance there. Every time I get behind a 109 or 190 within a matter of seconds someone hops on my tail. I, of course, can never get anyone to watch my back since no amount of typing will get a response. I type "where are u guys" over and over again and all I hear is the sound of silence. No one is willing to help since they are too busy chatting with their buddies on TS.

What happened to the IL2 community!? There used to be many great servers with "mature" settings and good maps. But now there is only War Clouds which is dominated by a closed society of super-computer owners. Again, what happened to this sim? It was so great. Thousands of people used to play. Now it only seems like hundreds. This is still a great sim, it is just that the community has gotten way to closed into small groups. Only dedicated (almost zealous) enthusiasts play online anymore it seems.

So, with the advantage of TS not possible for me due to my aging rig should I even bother anymore? The casual player is dead meat these days with all those TeamSpeak jockies out there.

The bottom line is that this game is no longer fun. Bummer...

Well what you need to do is find some fellows that will play with you in small groups. My connection will only handle hosting the game and hosting about 6 people on TS so we keep it small. If I have some weeker machines in volved we can turn TS codec down to a lower level and keep coms going evne though the sound quality goes down it is still understandable. I often host privately, this way. Tenmmike has been in with us and about 8 pilots and TS going and is able to play with us for the most part. If its just him and I and a couple others I can even host a Online Campaign with no ill effect. Some of those have over 20 aircraft in the air. If you want more info PT me and I'll work some sort of schedule out and see if you can fly with us Privately. We prefere COOPs, Campaigns and 1v1 or 2v2 senarios.

Tibbetts...I fly WarClouds regularly. Not everyone is on TS. You are more than welcome to join up with myself or our group (even tho we r on TS). I can guarnatee u will be noticed and appreciated for joing in. Just hang with us and we'll all cover each other. I'm a very poor typer and slow at that so i don't use the chat much since it's too hard to fly and type at the same time.

I am hopeful in the fact that as soon as the dedicated server for AEP is released the online scenario will get much better. There are many (at least 4 that I know of) servers with popular settings and good historical attendence that are waiting for this to put their servers back on HL.

Hang in there. You're not alone in the skies and I'm sure T_O_A_D and others will be able to get you "TS capable".

As far as flying alone...There are many times I do it with good success...even on Warclouds. The trick there is to always keep the "E" advantage so you can dictate the rules of engagement. I find this most possible when I fly Blue as some of their birds are just faster.

Col. Tibbets, first of all, you should be on a crew intercom w/ that Enola Gay of yours.

Secondly, if TS doesn't suit you, there's Ventrilo, RW, and plenty of others. Try them out.

Just a question. Why don't some of you having problems hosting or running TS and want to fly together, just create a room on one of TS's public servers? That is what my sqadron does and no one has to worry about serving TS and it hogging your computers resources. Works great for us. Even some of these great servers on HL could create a room using one of TS public servers for all who fly on there server. Is there a downside to this? Just curious. S!

War Clouds is a n00b server anyway so you aren't missing much.

Tibbets, I have a hard time believing that your rig could be weaker than mine (1gig PIII, 512 ram and an NVidia card that's so old it's laughable by today's standards, I think it's 32bit). I also connect with 56K and I have no problems running the game and any voice comms. Either you are using a computer that is WAY too old to even be running FB or you need to do some kind of tweaking.

More expensive than the dining set.
Less expensive than the couch.
Smaller than the dishwasher.
Just as noisy as the refridgerator.
Faster than the cars' computer.

Thanks for the nice replies folks. I was losing hope.

I guess I have my rig configured wrong or something. It wasn't the bandwith TeamSpeak was hurting. My ping rate was always wonderful on War Clouds. I was getting between 33 and 80 ping. That is wonderful!

The problem was frame rate. As soon as I loaded Teamspeak my fps (I use FRAPS) dropped considerably and the whole game became a slideshow. When I closed TS my fps returned to 25-30 which isn't that great I know but acceptable.

I have a SBLive! card which can handle EAX. I also have an ASUS A7A mobo with a Althlon 1.4 gig processor, 266 mhz bus and a 4x GeForce 4Ti card. I play at 1024x768 with no ansio and 2X AA. My biggest prob is that I only have 512 meg ram and people are putting more and more objects on maps these days, especially War Clouds.

Is there hope or do I need to start shopping?

Thanks again guys. Your kind offers are uplifting. I am regaining faith in the community.

See? Your rig outclasses mine. I wish I could tell you how I have things set up, but quite frankly I haven't a clue as to what in my settings helps things run so smoothly for me. I will say that although my res is set the same as yours (1024X768) I may have set some of my settings in-game to a more "medium" level.

The other thing that I do is to connect directly to my ISP server via "My Connection", then I open HL and then what ever voice comms I'm using. That is to say that I don't have a browser open and I don't go through MSN or AOL or Earthlink or whatever (except to the extent that I'm using one of their recommended connections). Connected this way I'm not able to leave HL and go elsewhere on the net, but who cares? When I'm online at home the only place I ever usually want to go is HL anyway. Give it a try and see what happens. Otherwise, I'm sure there are folks here a lot more comp lit than I who can help you out.

This may not be practical for you but, I just use my laptop for teamspeak. Then it takes nothing away from my main machine speed-wise.

Well Turn off Fraps and if you must see your FPS use the in game feature. It uses less recources.
shift/tab
then type just like this caps and all

fps START SHOW

If you want it off then

shift/tab

fps STOP SHOW

Then if you can pick up another 512 ram and it should workl just fine. Unless your super sensitive to fps your rig should never if set up right drop beleow the 20's on line. Unless your your in the middle of town and near an explosion. My server is dang near a mirror of yours and I can play on it as a back up anytime.

it's a
Asus A7v266-E mobo
512 crucial ram pc2100
128 no name stick aswell
Geforce 3 ti 200 64 meg vid card
Onboard sound enabled

I downloaded TS2 recently and have tried using it on WarClouds on HL. While I have occasionally heard other voices, I don't seem to be able to speak to them. I do have a microphone! The trouble seems to be that I need to be approved (not the precise terminology) to be able to speak. How does one get this? Also do I need to chose the TS2 channel in advance before entering a game? I can't see any way of changing it once in game.

Sorry for the dumb*ss question but I'm new to online comms which really will be the icing on the cake.

TX will be putting our servers back up after the release of the AEP Dedicated server also.

In addition....we are already running a public TS server with plenty of bandwidth to handle everyone who is playing on our member's current servers (gui based... i.e. TX-Ersk's and TX-Cuda's servers) For the connection information, message a TX member in one their servers... they will provide the info.

More announcements on the return of the TX-OC3 as soon as the dedicated server release draws closer.

Regards and Salute,
