View Full Version : Are you a better driver now?

The traffic during today's commute was particularly thick. Not slow, but just lots of other cars (bogeys) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif It occured to me that I was swinging my head around between my side, rearview mirrors and out the windshield (not unlike when flying in enemy airspace or in formation) (Note: I use Track-IR). So a bi-prouduct of flying FB AEP has been that my "situational awareness" while driving my car has improved. I'm "bounced" far less often now by faster moving vehicles (particularly motorcycles). I can even spot "Bandits" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif (cops) ahead and behind sooner (and adjust my speed accordingly) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif. I figure AEP and Track-IR have paid for themselves in savings from avoided speeding tickets. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yup. I find that too.

Mindset is the same...it boosts your situational awareness. As far as your brain is concerned, its the same type of operation.

I started simming before I started driving so I havn't really noticed a difference. I do however have a tendancy to drive twice the speed limit but yet I still have a spotless driving record. I have a very high SA while driving and this is what has kept me out of trouble. Perhaps it was flight sims that allowed that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif. And yeah it is definately the same mindset. Police cars=teh La-7, Police bikes=teh Spitfire http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif.

You do know you're supposed to use your mirrors often in the first place, right, Obsidian? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I drove professionally once. Every eight seconds the driver was supposed to "sweep" the mirrors- left, right, ahead for a few seconds, anticipate other drivers stupidity, sweep left, right

FB doesn't make me drive better. GPL, now, that's different. It made me drive faster.

I've driven like I was a pilot all my life! Use of mirrors has always been essential; that and keeping my eyes on a sweeping scan of those mirrors. I think if your rearview mirror is adjusted properly, you don't have to move yourhead, just your eyes.If I'm stopped behind someone and I can't see their eyes in their rv-mirror I let them get a little space, then I pass them as soon as I can. I figure they have low SA and won't see trouble coming.
On rainly streets, how many of you look to catch the reflection of brake lights on cars a few positions forward of you. When you pass someone, do you look at that driver, or at his front wheels?

Well, i'm not a driver yet... too young..
but i remember two things when being in the car with my father driving:
1. once i tried to get a deflection shoot at a car turning in front, using a bug on the windshield as gunsight.....
2. whenever i stay on the rear seat, behind the driver, i usualy lean left to see the road in front beside driver's head, and start dreaming about being in a two-seater....mmmmmm
can this be called obsession?

What made me a better driver was surviving my first 6 months as a motorcyclist.... if you think flight sims are good for your SA, try surviving city commuter traffic on a motorcycle on a Friday afternoon without eyes in the back & sides of your head http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes, after playing FB for 2 years my driving skills have greatly improved. I've been able to run red lights without skimming into any other cars. I can cut corners better while still keeping my speed up. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

And just the other day I was being chased by 2 cops, I turned into a narrow alley, the alley was too small for my car to fit through, but thanks to FB I was able to balance my car up on 2 wheels! I managed to squeeze through the alley and lose the Fuzz! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I also jumped a 150ft gap between a draw bridge that was being lifted as I was racing towards the post office to deliver a letter. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

This is all the thanks to FB! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

thats right about mirror usage... what pilot has the mirror facing himself???? they arent there for you to point all of them back at yerself

when i drive my friends cars i CANT STAND that they have rear view pointed off to the right so as to "prevent blindspots" yet you look in the corner mirrors, the driver side is pointing back at them, and the passanger side is pointed at the car door.

move those mirros OUT..not in..when you dont see your car panels anymore , your in good shape. because when done right, the front of a vehicle in your side mirror you see.. your rear view mirrow will have the end of it viewable as well (even motorcycles).

ok im off my tangent.. but people wonder why "i never saw them comming!" prevent an accidnt...move your mirrors out. youll actually see traffic, and have better escape planning.

TULLY.
i completely agree. the first 12 years of my driving was soley by motorcycle in houston. there is not a single day i didnt learn something new. wehter it was hot, steamy, cold, raining, freezing, muddy, and slight snow, i was out everyday. i hate being a "cager" when ya really think about it....how can you trust a vehicle that leans the oposite direction of where your turning?

In IL2 you get a better feeling of where you're going while facing backwards or something like that. You also get a good sense of different speeds. (especially while flying in formations)

Overall situational awareness is IMHO more trained by my UT2004 and AAO sessions. You get a very good apprehension from that, quickly realizing movements and the ability to interpret them very quickly. You also train the peripheral sight a lot more than in IL2. It also improves Eye-Hand-Coordination and 3D-thinking, as a recent study discovered.

Infact, for me, the best method to train for a furball is a round of quick deathmatch in UT. After a bit of training, the movements in IL2 seem so slow, you can predict the next things happening easily. It's a good training for shooting from the most odd positions, too http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

When I have my arms out and I'm running around making "VROOOMMM" noises, I get po'd because I can't see around me as well as when I have my TrackIR on and I'm flying on my pc.

If anything, my vroom noises have suffered as a result of this game...they need to be more realistic. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif

I feel SO tacky with my old 74" Knuck...

However, it is like comparing an IL-2 to an F-14.

Those bikes you guys have are awesome machines. I'm really thinking of getting a bike with a SUSPENSION on it as well. LMAO I rode a softail of friend's the other day.. It scared me. I gassed it in a corner and when the rear suspension loaded up, I thought the back end had come loose. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif I looked VERY n00Bish for a few secs. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif Rigids rock but I'm gettin a bit old to maintain the "image".

I am a much better driver since IL2. I am also a better driver because of actual flight trainig in RL.

I drive a Plymouth Voyager, and I am constantly scanning gauges, checking my 6, watching for those bogeys http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, etc . . .
