Okay yes, I'm stupid. I cannot figure out the point of the puzzle in the demo. I thought I had it figured out, that you were supposed to get all the squares with red dots highlighted, but I finally did that and nothing happened. So I'm trying to get all the squares without dots to turn red, but I'm having a much harder time with that.

Am I even doing the right thing? No outright spoilers please, just hints.

I've never been very good at these types of puzzles. One of the reasons that I love the Myst games is that they are VERY challenging for me!

You're doing the right thing; if you got all the squares with the red dots lit, and only those squares, something should have happened.

A thought: are you sure you were seeing all the dots? There are two sides to this puzzle...

You need a little light to illuminate the situation.

Well, I've got the lights on, but I didn't realize there were two sides to the puzzle. I even got out and looked at the picture again after getting all the red dots highlighted (and yes, I double-checked those), and I didn't see anything different. I will try again.

Yep....that's all it took me....and I didn't even need to peek at mrm3fan's solution.

I was about to post one myself, but he beat me to it.

I will say that it took me a while to figure out those seven clicks though.

I thought I'd gotten all the red dots highlighted, but maybe I missed one. Or maybe you have to click the boxes in a certain order?

Either way, it worked and I was able to finish the demo. Thanks! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Yeah... seven clicks... the trick is not to do anything that changes an already red square back to brown. You only have to turn each square red once.

I assumed it would be much more complicated than that the first time through, and got myself in unnecessary trouble http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

You have no idea how much time it took me to solve this...

I didn't even saw that it was all about those 7 clicks...

God...

did you people actually thought it through or just kinda did trial and error?

Actaully I spent about an hour clicking all over the place at first trying to get only the ones I needed to. After saving my game to take a break and coming back to load it up again only to find out that it RESETS the puzzle http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif. I decided to just look at the blank puzzle for awhile and after about 5 minutes I figured it out. Sometimes it just helps to take a break, step back, and get a new look at things!

I don't think it matters what order you click them in. I do it from right to left myself but thats only cause it was how I saw it when I first figured it out.

Probably took me, maybe three attempts, each an hour or so, and I blundered into the solution I know not how, trying to play it like the game of Life, developing elaborate notes, trying theories like trying to scoot blank squares into the upper right corner, crazy stuff. And it turns out that careful observation, some thought: and it is seven easy clicks? This is a lesson to take into the rest of the game!

Make sure you have both lamps turned on.

For the record, I solved it on the second attempt in about 30 seconds.

That's probably what I was doing wrong the first time. I was clicking all over the place, and I know I changed lots of squares back and forth lots of times.

I love these puzzles - figured it out from first principles...

One row changes outer four and inverts, another row just highlights outer four *and centre square* without inverting... then repeat on next row...

I think a similar game called LightsOut was sold in many areas, and there are demos/games that are downloadable from various places... I confess it's a little like Tetris for me, I just get hooked and can never let go.

I just hope the puzzles in the full game aren't so easy :/ http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

With my luck, they won't be. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

It only took me like 10-15 minutes of playing around, but it definately took me more than seven clicks, I look at your solution and it's so simple, I always do these things the hard way.

Here's something,

Its either a question or a challenge depending on how you look at it.

Is it possible to highlight the red squares so they match good ol' Pattern 158?

I can't try this myself yet, as I am at work and my demo is at home (silly NetAdmin won't let me install the demo at work!)

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm... in reading the page on the desk, it says:

Note:
- Turn ONE of the lamps OFF to RESET the code readout
|| AFTER having achieved correct code combination!

Does this mean that there are two more puzzles? If so, has anyone solved them?

i've only seen one particular pattern, even after trying new game... also, 158 comes very close to being possible, but i can't get the last two squares to fit properly!!!grrr

Has anyone found out if anything happens when you press the small "hidden" drawer in the desk? It slides back, then comes right back out, but I haven't found any changes... (Just a yes/no is all I'm looking for!) There are so many tantalizing details to the demo, and I'm sure that some things may just be left for the actual game, and are here to "tease".

I especially like wandering around, just to find another place where the necklace will come in handy!

The lights aren't inside the fireplace. Look at Atrus' note to see what they look like.

I haven't played this type of game in years and decided to download the demo and see if it's any easier than the original Myst. I guess not! Anyway, I too am having troubles with the demo. I have put on both lights in the room, and highlighted all the red dots for the lasers on both sides but nothing happens. It says in the note to put a light out once you get things in the proper order, but that doesn't seem to work either. If I put a light out then when I go back in the fireplace, there is only one laser the is lit. I even tried the spoiler in this thread and it makes no sense to me. This is driving me absolutely nuts. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me. Thanks
