View Full Version : Iam i the only guy who wants to fly biplane dogfights?

04-14-2004, 04:07 PM
Ive set up a server with only biplanes. I asked if anyone would want to try and i got LAUGHED at!
I am soo tired of 109s and p-51s matches.
I havent even been able to find a jet server.????
Am I alone?

I like biplanes

I just don't play online a lot. I was waiting for everyone to get AEP, and now I'm waiting for the patch.

I love bi-planes too.

I just feel constrained to fly the same things my squad flies - so it's Spit's again http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Nothing wrong with Spit's, just I like the really early stuff too.

Porcupine! I'm on your side man! I love biplanes, and lately have been working like a dog to get the Po-2 (U-2VS) flyable. That little biplane was doing harrassment bombing right up through the Korean War! If that doesn't make it into the game, what will?

Don't worry Porcupine, you'll get visitors. I've gotten into a few biplane matches on Hyperlobby, I'm sure there'll be more.

I sometimes run a biplane map. it seems to depend on the time you are doing this. I am on eastern standard time. so I am 5-6 hrs behind most of western europe. I am not sure what time it is in austrailia and new zealand, but at 3-6am eastern standard time the hyper lobby is full of these guys. now maybe they just hate me a lot and want to shoot me down, I dont know. but when I run a map the game almost always fills up rather quickly, even when I run the biplane only map. maybe its the time your doing it. because when I try and host a game between 3pm-2am eastern standard time, nobody will join it, no matter what map/plane set/or settings I use.

04-15-2004, 09:15 PM
I kinda like the biplanes but don't fly online. I'm still trying to figure out how to paint one up like my dad's Pitt Special (control line not real one). Are you gonna be Swordfish whiner #2? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I think the I-153 can easily outturn any jet or fighter in the game - biplanes own.

04-16-2004, 12:18 AM
Biplanes rock. I-153 and J8a are my personal fav aircraft.

My little bro just got interested in FB and i taught him how to fly in the J8A. Now i find him flying biplanes ALL the time. He loves them.

Nothing like a low and slow scissors fight, with each pilot snapping off 1/4 second bursts as they pass each other. Turn, fire, snap roll turn, fire and repeat.

Still trying to complete an acrobatics track in a J8A though. Has anyone tried (successfully) flying along a road, through a bridge yet?

This has been hashed to the point of leaving an unidentifiable lump of gray mush.

I wish someone would dedicate a server to PRE 1940 planes only!! Been discussed, some have hosted games only to have them sit empty or just a few flyers. I think theres a certain skill level with those plane you dont need with the newer ones. You better place shots perfectly, stalls are complicated at best to recover from. Open cockpit you dont get so brave in attacking.

I think a more realistic approach is to talk some of the dedicated servers into accepting OUR maps into their rotation. (remember the greatergreen with P.11's vs. 111's??) Other than that its a dream. Too bad, every plane in FB...well, except the 109Z,the B1 and the YP..should be an absolute blast to have "proper" historic place sets vs. each other. Theres little thrill in taking an I-16 up when 90% of the planes in the DF server are 1943 and up, eh?
Well, I will stay tuned hoping. I'd even host if I'd get a few PM's saying to host at a certain time, and plane sets.
Seems back in the day, we'd see more P.11 only, or 109E only servers. Those were too dam fun
ok, doggie out-

I flew on the 'Virtualpilots_2' or something like that on HL the other night, and it was all pre 40! J8A, G-50, B-239 and Hurricane on the blue side, I-16, I-153, Hurricane and maybe another one on the red side! The server had approximately 20-25 pilots all the time I was in. It was really fun!

Due to a crappy internet connection I fly only offline. My best dogfight was in the finnish career flying a J6A against I-153's. It was a breathtaking, longlasting turning fight which I enjoyed very much. It's more fun then WW1 dogfights because you can use more of the vertical.

04-16-2004, 01:07 PM
I can't see flying them against later planes, but all biplanes sounds like fun.

04-16-2004, 03:59 PM
I love flying the CR.42 Falco. It is kinda tough when the only time I can fly it is when every plane is available. I end up fighting Ki 84s and 109zs. However, these guys always end up turn fighting in the weeds so I can usually kill them, but I get killed also.

I am waiting for a historical coop or DF server with the Falco vs the Gladiator. A med coop. I would host, but I have dial up http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I am (as many of my squadronmates) a biplane junkie, and LOVE to down Mig 3:s in a J8A on Virtual Pilots 2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

And no, Chaikas are NOT uber for the J8A, it's an even match, just depends on how you fly 'em.

Porcupine, what's the name of the server, I'd love to join you.

Biplanes definitely kicks *** !
I'd love a biplane/only server on HL.

04-17-2004, 05:39 AM
It rocks, IMO Gladiator and i-153 are quite evenly matched. Haven't tried CR42 one single time but I assume it's the same. Really cool fun, I have made it couple of times. Nice WW I like dogfight no BnZ, no ueber guns, perfect training for basic ACM.

04-17-2004, 02:26 PM

I think it is very important to leave out I-153P and I-16 Type 24 from planeset because of their 20 mm cannons.

It takes longer and requires more aiming skills to shoot down oppnents with machine guns only. Also there is is a lot better chance for TB-3s to survive.

04-18-2004, 12:31 AM
mm more fun with peaguns, more challenging http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Now I wish dedictaed server comes soon, VPII was crowded yesterday, a good thing but with 32 players we get some serious lag issues.

PS: masamainio

Gloster Gaunlet. A nice little biplane that one is http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

From 'The British Fighter, F.Mason, Putman 1992': "The first production aircraft made its maiden flight on 17 December 1934" "... It is an interesting statistic that the margin of speed by which the Gaunlet exceeded that of the Bulldog, which it replaced (56 Mph) was almost exactly the same as that by which the the Hurricane exceeded the speed of the Gladiator - which it replaced some three years later, such was the untrumpeted advance represented by the Gaunlet" "...Gauntlets were also exported to Finland early in 1940, and seventeen Mark IIs were built under licence by the Flyvertroppernes Vaerksteder at Copenhagen"

Granted the Chaika has a little edge over the J8A on speed, but if it gets distracted in a turn fight it can also become the prey.

Gun damage is just another question. I must be quite unlucky with my .303 Brownings, almost never hitting vital parts in the Chaika despite actually scoring countless hits. Sounds odd after reading all those accounts from Finnish pilots saying how a short burst put the enemy planes in flames, but I don't want to complain too much about it. These long dogfights are good fun http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this allegedly 'revised' gun damage. Hmmm...

04-18-2004, 04:52 AM
Well I'm glad this thread is still alive.
Found the V-2 server, no one was in it, and it was 10:20 virtual time. Kind of a round dogger to find the runway in the dark without externals http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Flew around for half an hour looking but no one came in- this at 8:30PM EST Friday night! I did bookmark it however in HP.
Would be nice to see more like this. Externals are so helpful for at least figuring out which way the hard pack is to get airborne! I mangled the prop first time till I bailed and figured out which way to get rolling. LOL

When you get to Hell, tell 'em HawgDog sent you!

Hawgdog, be sure to find your way back there. It usually fills up at around 6 pm GMT, or so it has in the past. I have also found out that when I enter it alone, it just takes a few minutes until one after the other log on, like flies to sugar http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

04-18-2004, 01:16 PM
Man, I love biplanes, I like to set up myself in a J8A vs. 16 CR.42's in the qmb to see how long I can last. Usually I run out of ammo or fuel before I get shot down http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Oh, and I played the Virtual Pilots server yesterday in a J8a. The thing really can hang with a I-153 if you fly right. I myself managed to shoot a couple down (though the CR.42's were much less of a match). Alot of times, it was more or less equal terms. But you gotta be really good at deflection shooting because you can't stay in a turn fight with them forever unless you borrow some canvas from them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

04-18-2004, 06:51 PM
Hi all,
This thread is a bit of an eye opener really, seems a heck of a lot of people love biplanes! Though I was in a minority as well! Personally think the first Gladiator campaign for the Finns is the best fun I've had offline in IL2/FB/AEP.
Incidently flying online against people who aren't quite up to speed in "mono" figters (and even some who are) you can cause havoc, what a hoot, it's a great lauf! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

04-18-2004, 10:27 PM
i was fighting the Gladiators online against squad mates & other good pilots & it was super easy to dominate them

fighting against the Chaikas was your typical using turn to avoid their E fighting

since then its clear to me that Gladiators are at a disadvantage on snow maps & the Chaika isnt able to dominate as easy when the Gladiator has wheels instead of skis

doesnt help doing a 1v1 as your first flight of the day either

will be interesting to see how it pans out after the patch because IMO the Gladiator & the CR42 should be very similer in the handeling

as it is now the Gladiator is HARD to stall & can be chucked around with careless abandon where as the CR42 requires a deft touch to merely stick with a speed retaining J8A let alone an aggressive J8A

also inflicting damadge is also going to become more sever if the rumor mill about online damadge moddeling is to be believed

04-18-2004, 11:28 PM
When I first load AEP, biplanes was most pleasent surprise for me. I created map for LAN and play it with my kids (they love it). When I find your server, I'll join! See you!

quote:
...as it is now the Gladiator is HARD to stall & can be chucked around with careless abandon ...

Badsight, the Gladiator was famous for beeing hard to stall. When doing the research for this model I talked with a few J8A pilots from the war, and this is what one of them said:

"Otherwise when it comes to flying characteristics, the J8 lacked ANY stalling tendencies. At low speed the "crate" just lowered the nose to find speed again. A fold just happened when you at too low a speed put on full spin rudder"

To go into detail I think they could adjust the engine model and the choking of the engine. This is what the official manual for the J8A (1938 page 110m chptr 5) says:

"5. Inverted flight.
When flying inverted (upside down) the airplane is very manoeuverable. At stall in this position, at 130 kph, the airplane folds fairly slowly and softly. No tendencies for backspinns exists."

Actually I tried flying the J8 in thunderstorm on 300 m alt, and the engine died from the shaking caused by the wind, maybe a little overmodelled, I don't know..

But no biggy for me, Love the plane as it is.

04-19-2004, 05:16 AM
ok i was only meaning in comparison to the CR42 because in my small amount of reading about the CR / Gladiator they were mentioned as being equals

in no way at all am i any authority AT ALL on biplanes in any form or another ..... what ive read about them is limited

as for the engine choke ..... that suxx ..... no way would it have done that IRL surely ??

04-19-2004, 05:41 AM

Well no, not that easily, The J8A had two different fueltanks, one maintank with a fuelpump, which was used during flight. Therefore the J8A should be able to fly inverted (as mentioned in the manual, but does not do this well in game as the engine dies), and one auxillary tank that was used during takeoff and landings for securityreasons in case the fuelpump failed.

This auxillary tank did not have a fuelpump, instead is was a "gravity" tank placed over the engine letting gravity take care of the fuelsupply to the engine. Now if one used only the auxillarytank when flying inverted then yes, the engine would die as it would not get fuel, but not when you use the mailtank with the fuelpump.

Now CR42, yes I agree this plane should get a facelift in the patch, it really spins too easily. I can't believe it was this sensitive taking all the pilot's testimonials into consideration.

But fly in carefully and it is really deadly, It has the same speed advantage over the J8A as the Chaika. Would be interesting to see a fight between a Chaika and a CR42, as these seem to be quite similar in performance... Haven't done this yet....

04-19-2004, 05:52 AM
Just came to think of it, you who does not speak Swedish and wonder what this "tap" is for (the shiny metal thingy to the righ)

This is the fueltank tap/switch.

Huvudtank = Main tank (as mentioned earlier)
St¤ngd = Closed
Falltank = reffers to the auxillary tank..

"Falltank" refers to the Swedish verb "falla" ("falling") and it is a tank that uses gravity to forward fuel to the carburettor with no fuelpump. The fuel "falls" down into the carburettor. This was common technology before the fuelpumps - I recall many pictures of older airplanes carrying their fueltank on top of the upper wing.

.. just incase you guys wondered what this was for..http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and yes, iIam at home sick, bored!!!! Anything else you want to know about the J8A?http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I LOVE BIPLANES! I think they rule! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

I used to fly SDOE with all the WWI add-ons and loved it. My favorite was the Fokker D.VII. Unfortunately, I could never get the game to work in HL and couldn't find extra missions to add to the game for offline play.

From what I hear, I would've loved the "Red Baron" sim, but that was a bit before I got into flight-simming and it doesn't run well on newer systems.

My favorite in FB AEP is the J8A Gladiator. The Fiat is cool too.

When Zerstorer gets our squad's server running, I plan to have a couple of "biplanes only" maps and 1 "jets only" map. I think we're going use a good bit of scripted-style maps too where plane sets are determined by year. And of coarse... Blue will be flying Axis aircraft & Red will be flying Allied aircraft.
