IL-2: P-39N1 and IL-2.

FB: P-39N1 and IL-2.

I started with the '39 in IL-2 because I figured if I mastered the tough to fly plane first I'd have no problems when I moved on to something else that was easier to handle.

Of course, once I got the hang of the P-39, I didn't want to switch to something else anymore.

It's been my favorite aircraft from the very beginning of IL-2, and no amount of patchwhining is going to make me give it up. No matter how it may change from patch to patch, I stay with it and refine my techniques to suit the new FM.

I may occasionally jump into something else to mess around, or tackle a situation that the '39 isn't as well suited to do, but I always go back to my N1.

I stick to the I-16 model 28 mostly. Although I spend equal time in the Sturmovik, BF-109, Stuka, and PB-3.
I fly the BF-109 in a Jabo campaign so really I pretty much only dogfight in the I-16. I did do a little in the P-40 but started a new pilot and went back to the I-16.

BFalcon, why do you prefer the P39 N1 over the Q models ??

I've spent most of my time in Red planes as I've read about & flown many of the German planes for years in other sims etc. The I16 tip 24 is incredibly fun if you can keep up with the bad guys. Also fond of Lagg3 for some unknown reason...

In original I-L2 I would almost exclusively fly P-39's. After FB came out I mainly switch between the La-7 and various versions of 109, but every once in a while I will fly an I-16 or 15 to do some aerobatics, as long as I don't pull to many negative G's.

The guns, mostly.

That, and for some reason despite everything I've read saying that the Q models were harder to spin, it seems to me at least, that the Qs spin more easily.

But mostly I like having the two .50s, the four .30s and the 37mm available, especially now with the extra ammunition loadout.

It's a fairly well rounded combination, with the .50s and 37mm doing well against 'harder' metal aircraft, and the .30s working nicely against the 'softer' stick and fabric types.

If I'm flying the N1, I feel fairly confident that I can adequately deal with anything I encounter. It may not be the best plane at anything, but handled correctly it's not really the worst at any particular thing either. When facing the unknown I prefer a well rounded, "jack of all trades" type aircraft to something that's highly specialized, but likely to get into trouble if it meets the wrong opposition.

Beyond that, you'll almost always still have ammo for the .30s left after everything else is gone, and while it won't do much damage against most of the things you shoot at, I've found it's still very valuable when flying against real people.

Most times, especially if you're on their 6, the other guy doesn't know what you're shooting at him, only that he's being shot at. On many occasions I've been able to chase someone into the ground as they've tried to dodge all the fire I'm giving them when all I've got left are the .30s. There's almost no chance that I can kill them with such low calibre ammo, but turning and running for home to reload will almost certainly get me killed by them.

You'd be surprised how often you can pressure someone into making a mistake and crashing if you just bluff them and keep the pressure on with agressive tactics and small guns. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

If one of the Q variants had four .50s and the 37mm as it should (IIRC), I'd probably be using that one. The Q10 is nice, but I don't like only having two .50s and the 37mm, it just doesn't feel like it's enough to me.

In theory, I think the N1 offers marginally better protection over the Q models as well, but I haven't really noticed a difference myself.

Funny thing is I see the Lagg 3`41 as a middle of the road plane, but I always seem to be flying it. Offline I spend the most time trying to survive the German invasion. Online, it`s always the choice in VOW or VEF missions... I definitely have more hours in that plane than any other though it`s not actually my favourite one. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Why does this plane seem to fly so phenomenally? It historically wasn't that great of a plane.

Bf-109
It's a good old standby.

Mig-3
I used to think, when I first started playing FB, that this plane was particularly easy to fly. I have since corrected myself.

For ground attacks, there's nothing like divebombing in a Stuka with that noisy airbrake. I love it.

Yak-9/Yak-3:

Very fun to fly. Good maneuverability, and easy to shoot with. Doing the Russian campaign in a Yak-9 right now, but not having much time for it because I fly online too much.

P-39N1:

This one has lots of guns and ammo, two things I'm quite fond of, and the UltraMegaDethCannon to boot. It feels good to fly this plane, and it feels good to rip other planes from neck to nuts with it.

FW-190A9:

I like this plane a lot, but I find it much harder to fly than the others. It certainly isn't as maneuverable, it weighs a ton, but the engine is huge and it goes much faster than the other two. So far the only other planes that can outrun it that I've seen are the La's. Any tips on how to fight in this thing (other than just raw B&Z/Hit'n'Run) are welcomed.

P-40E, P-47D-27,LAGG3 - older, FW190A8, BF109G6 and E4, and of course IL2 2seater.

For some reason I don't want to get used to flying the LA7 or YAK3, or P-39 because they seem easy to develop bad turn and yank habits with.
