View Full Version : FB would sell more copies with a Spitfire on the cover

And obviously in the game. But UBI and/or Maddox apparently has High School educated Marketing stars working for them who have decided to exploit the sexiness of the Eastern front instead of actually using marketing intelligence to appeal to a broader audience while still keeping true to what Oleg envisions the product to be.

I wonder what UBI and Maddox would do if they sold 40% more copies. Hmm, maybe have more money?

Okay, back to CFS3 where I can gaze at the beaute while I chase down BF110s.

Damn tootin'. But maybe as members of the community we can help.

Oh, wait, I'm sorry, it's about the quick buck and not about the continuity of the genre. I don't know diddly 'bout that.

Bo Diddly's got fantastic stuff....

PS I'd bet dimes to donuts that my uncle's monkey says it's not about Maddox or 1C, it's about UBI.

And careful about dissing UBI, their business model works or they wouldn't be where they are, and I wouldn't be playing some of the games I enjoy most

I agree they have one of the worst marketing groups for a gaming company i have seen, I never heard a word about the original il2 until someone told me about it in the cfs2 days.

I see commercials on discovery wings for fighter ace 3.5 warbirdsIII cfs2 and 3 and seen the new lucas arts game the other day. They should spend the money and advertise a little more, gaming magazines =s young kid audience. They need have booths at airshows and have a couple commericals on the dicovery network, where hundreds of thousands watch It would really increase the sales. Better profits =s better quality

If UBI was really on the ball they would take the code and just make maps modable. Not the vehicles.

I have a feeling that model makers will keep making models as long as UBI make 'em flyable. As long as the model libraries keep growing, map makers can expand the game and eventually connect all the maps.

And if they are really, truely on the ball, they would make ground combat games based on the same engine.

Like they already tried to do with the sub/destroyer game they put out in the last couple years that doesn't quite work.

And like they should do cause they already are aleady using an extension of IL2/FB engine to produce the new Oleg based RTS game. (perhaps I'm wrong, but the plane models in the screenshots look terribly familiar)

If they don't connect them and let me ground pound my RTS or FPS buddy with my IL2, I simply will not understand a damn thing about computers and marketing and money.

Or the fact that responsible companies are ignoring the fact that video gaming sales surpassed the gross from the movie industry last year

This isn't a troll, it's a fact. FB is ALWAYS poorly placed in stores, there aren't many copies anywhere I've ever seen it, and when in EB and I see someone looking at sims I always say "This one is phenominal", which is when they look at the box, get that "what the feck is this" look on their face, read the back, then put it back and decide to surf the web for more info before they spend money on a $70CDN game that to a North American seems to include canoes, rowboats and inner tubes rather than familiar planes.

It may be perfect for Russia but for North America UBI obviously didn't think for a moment about who they're appealing to.

It just happens that CFS3 has Spits and BF110s, but this isn't about that. It's just that everywhere BUT in my favorite sim (FB) I can fly a Spit.

Just the faxcts.

PS I loathe EB as a retailer. We (I've) done architectural work for them and their retail theme is based on things other than selling quality games to those in the know

The cover art in North America features a Hurricane; I'm guessing that it is the same art used for the UK. Obviously there was some attempt to woo Western consumers ...

Problem is that the Hurri looks waiflike and fragile in the picture, not an exciting and powerful fighting machine. The Original IL-2 had more inspiring artwork and the cover image of a Sturmovik in action was at least truer to the theme of the game. It took me a year to finally buy the first IL-2 because I looked at that ugly Horsefly-looking plane and thought, "What the heck is that thing? It looks like it could barely get off the ground!" Of course now I know better ...

There are several 'sexy' planes that could be featured on the cover and be more evocative than the current selection. Obviously a P-47 dressed up in US colors would be more attractive to American consumers, but I think this would be a disservice and misrepresentational of the sim's theme. The P-40E would be a better choice (for US) as the 'Flying Tigers' have a place in our cultural lexicon ... Still, I think a very striking cover art could have been created using true Soviet fighters vs. Luftwaffe concept. A late war German fighter coming at you in immediate foreground with a VVS fighter right on his tail chipping away at him with machine guns for starters. Or something with strong diagonal lines, like the topsy-turvy "locked in a furball" arwork of the "Jane's WWII Fighters" cover. I just don't 'hear' or 'feel' any action with the Forgotten Battles box art; did that Stuka develop engine problems? Did the Hurricane shoot him down or is that Hurricane covering him? What is the Hurri pilot shooting at anyway? And why can't I see the pilot -- there's no human element!

Here's an idea: make the artwork horizontal instead of vertical! I'm thinking along the lines of the artwork for model kits. Why do we assume all computer game art has to be vertical like a book, other than that's the way the boxes are placed on shelves? Can you imagine the impact of a box that has horizontal art when you pick it up -- not only is it strikingly different, but it also makes you think of childhood days of toys and kits that fired up your imagination and demanded your full attention!

For example, I'm looking at a couple of Hasegawa 1:72 tank model kits that are sitting unbuilt on my desk. A year ago, I saw them in a hobby shop and just had to have them; I bought five on the spot. Their boxes aren't much bigger than a PC game box; the kits and the FB box share the same width and heighth and the model kits are about an inch longer; the painting on the model kit boxes are exactly the same size as my Forgotten Battles box. But the battle scenes are so exciting with soldiers running, explosions all around, whizzing bullets, that you can't help but imagine a whole world inside the box. I've seen similarly exciting artwork on aircraft kit boxes.

Of course shelf placement dictates that the boxes have vertical art ...

I bought IL2 because of the reviews on sites like gonegold.com, having a Spit on the cover would not have swayed me, but still it doesn't get the exposure on the shelves that it should.

Best idea I've heard all day. Completely agree.

I want that big EAW map of western Europe and I want it badly. One big map, not a bunch of small ones.

If this was done right, I would have no problem at all paying a reasonable amount of $ for it

Box art sells PC games??? I had no idea! I hope the Ubi marketing execs are reading this thread /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Here's another wild idea: use an actual SCREENSHOT from the game rather than those ridiculous cartoon airplanes pasted on top of a aerial shot of a ski park!!!

WTE had to stop using the Finland map for online training as it bogged down too much once you had large numbers of players. Imagine what an "all europe" map would do to FPS

they do have an idea of marketing i believe, the russian version had the la7 and the 190 on the cover i think for the uk market the cover is ideal as stukas and hurris are in a lot of our BoB preconceptions
maybe a p40/p47 would have been better for the US market but anyway.
i just want my mk1 spitfire flyable so we can complete our BoB line up at tangmere.

You´re deeply mistaken!!! I would guess, that this is really cool Ubi marketing strategy. Because Spitfire will undoubtedly help to sell more coppies but of a new product (The battle of Britain). Why they should waist spitfire over the eastern front, should they? And then ... my be you will get a spitfire patch into FB.

I heard for the first time about IL2 (original) in the fnac on the Champs Ely. Seen the presentaation movie. looked soo cool. by that time i was too busy cfs2'ing or jas'ing , falcon'ing. So I forgot about the game for 2-3 weeks. then I have seen it in R'dam on a book store! and decided to buy it , was 39.99 euros but it was in a real box , not as it is FB in that crappy DVD cover. for CSF3 I tryied it once , was too slow for my machine I threw it away , heard there's a patch somewhere but never bothered to dnld it. I'm happy with cfs2 , landing carriers and crete scenery , pretty cool. That's when I don't fly the jug. this week I found myself playin' other gaames than FB , even crapp ones such crimson skies. But most of the time cfs2. I want to have a big surprise when fB patch will come out!

Yes, the video-game industry is rather large. Yes, box art goes a long way toward selling a game. Who buys most of that stuff, in what age group? How many of them know the difference between a Spitfire and an La-7? Don't confuse your knowledge with theirs. The plane itself just has to look phat. American markings on it wouldn't hurt. In NA I think the P-47 with American markings, if also the teeniest bit dishonest, would sell more copies. I also agree that there are far too few copies on the shelves of this game. The most I have ever seen is two or three. I had to hear about IL-2 from an Electronic Boutique salesman who suggested it to me. The box art convinced me, even though I didn't recognize a single plane. (Then I didn't know jack about any WWII plane that wasn't in the CFS series, and little about most of them.)

What I somewhat disagree with is the idea that that course should be pursued. I'm rather pleased that people discover a little about the Russian front in this game. If Western maps were made available, that's all Westerners would play. I don't know if that's an actual reason, but I think it would be a good one. I don't get the impression that Oleg is in this to get rich. I know he wants to make money, but he has passion.

Besides, who wants the average age of FB users or in this forum to sink to 22? Who's gonna answer all those posts? /i/smilies/16x16_robot-tongue.gif
