Is a force feedback joystick worth it? I am thinking of getting one.

Thanks

Yes ive thought about that too. Doesnt it makes it harder to fly and make you a worse pilot?

XyZspineZyX

You can get a much better stick if you go no force in my opinion. Many like having the feedback though.

I love FF, it does throw off you aim a little but it adds to realism. FB is not about points to me anyway.

Not about the points? I feel the same way, but then again, I'm not good enough to earn many! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I was toying with the idea of a FF stick as well, but I'm not sure. How much does it throw off your flying style at first? I have the SIdewinder Precision 2 right now and am quite happy with it. Any thoughts---Hammer

I'm not a GOOD pilot, but I'll make you work for it!

If you want immersion then get it, if you want to be a 'better' pilot then don't do it.

If you play only WW2 sims it worths every penny. If you play Falcon or other jet , it will be spmehow ... unrealistic. They are flyin' by wire.

I have flown with FF for all of IL2 and now FB.
I had the Logitech Wingman FF and now I have the MSS2FF.

In a nutshell, Forcefeedback rocks and I cannot imagine the game without it.

You can FEEL you plane start to stall, you can FEEL the weaker air at high altitudes, you can FEEL your aircraft shake when you go too fast.
You even feel the rough ground when you land plus aiming is more realistic as the cannons throw your aim off when you fire and you have to really be sure how you are aiming. Releasing bombs makes your aircraft lurch, firing rockets gives you a kick in the pants, etc. etc.

Those are just a couple of examples.

I seriously do not understand how folks can play this game WITHOUT FF.

Therefore, I would highly recommend the Microsoft Sidewinder 2 ForceFeedback. The new one with the red buttons works awesome with XP and the variety of forces is amazing.

My two cents.

Yes it's worth it.

Yes it does throw you off your aim BUT it also lets you know how far you can go before you stall and spin and such. It also reacts when you get hit! Very cool... imho.

Thanks Canuck. I think I may just go out and start pricing them. You're in Canada? Here in the states I believe they are going for about $100.
Oh well, anything to throw off my aim! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Hey on a side note, there's a website (www.beapilot.com (http://www.beapilot.com)) that you guys should check out. It's basically a pilot school, but you get a "test" flight, where they let you take the stick for awhile, for $49. ---Hammer

Hey Hammer.
I paid 129 Canadian at Staples and got a 50$ mail in rebate.

Therefore I ended up paying only $79 Cdn or about $50 US.
Good deal where I come from.
Bearcat knows where to get them cheap in the US.

FFB is worth every penny to me. I don't worry about "throwing" off my aim nearly as much as being able to tell how the airflow is over my control surfaces.

Also, in other sims that don't model FFB, just disable it./i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Good luck with the stick.
Get the new one with the red buttons and I am sure you will be happy.

My avatar code was copied from someone with their permission. Cannot remember whom.

I found an animated GIF on the web and substituted my site for their site.

Go ahead and steal my code. You can find that at the bottom of the screen when you hit reply. There are three chunks of code, one for the header bar, one for the background (which works off and on) and one for the avatar. The one for the avatar is the one with "Canflag" in it. A few weeks ago I wore out my beloved Microsoft FFB stick and was forced for a few days to use a secondary stick that though was a decent stick it did not have force feedback.

The result were flat spins, overcompensations on take of and landings, death in all mannner and forms from rammings to splatering myself all over the ground.

If I managed to get airborne I was in the realm of the low altitude stalls and in a P39 that is "bad" news. The results was the same. Splattered all over the ground just before I managed to shout "This is really starting to **** me the **** right ****ing off"

I am happy to have a new stick with feedback and I am not dying by my own hands anymore/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

So feedback is a must and not just for immersion into the game. It forewarns you of stalls and the like/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

As SmokeJaguar put it, its easy to overcompensate or totally miss a turn, etc.

Force feedback, however slight, is very very helpful, but my MS Sidewinder stick is a little wobbly after 10 months, so that may be a bad thing, its not horrible, but it was much tighter when I got it.

So, yes, FF joysticks are worth every penny.

I have seen a couple of notes on this board that MS will replace the stick at any point if anything goes wrong.

RayBanJockey and Bearcat seem to have the most experience with this.

Give Microsoft a call or maybe send a pm to RBJ/Bearcat and see if they can help.

Well you can say like this. If you have ever owned a FFB joystick (a good one anyway http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) you will never go back. Except if you only play space simulators maybe http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

And why would you want to switching off the gun fire FFB effects? That is about half the fun of it. I actually set the FFB to max, sure I loose precision but damn it´s fun http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It all depends. If you want realism in a WW2 sim, then definitely consider it. But, the competitor is a wireless stick. I have one, and don't know how i could stand the wired ones. But again, it all depends on what you want. If you do choose the wireless, then go with a Logitech 2.4 Freedom! It's what i have. Good stick!

S!

Rutrow. I may have jumped on the Ray wagon too soon without real knowledge...its that pic-I tell ya!

Edit FF?? Oh do tell more dear Sir. (bows and awaits)

Fell in love with FF upon my 1st stick..7 later(grrrr BillyG) My only expierence with FF is in RedBaron3d..can hurt aim but more than makes up for that with SA of what you are asking of your plane. After a smidge of time with the stick you learn to easy your "death grip" and put the sight on the bad guy!

I've always found the sim to be the woe. Does it model correctly for FF forces. CFS2 was real wicked stock..til this fella posted a calming effect for MsFF on takeoffs and landings.

I can't really think of a better immersion factor for flight sims til they invent the G suit or the inner ear 3d!

When they do I'll watch the posts..like for this TrackerIR and then be on it like snot on a doorknob(catch me swear-tracker!) lol.

Has anyone here elongated their Microsoft FFB? I have the old Force Feedback Pro. Its old so I was thinking of adding some length to it. I'm sure I can figure it out and if I don't then I'll have to get the new one with the USB cable.
