I just assumed they followed the paths of their fathers.

Lets see the most dilemmas within main characters AC has used:

Master vs apprentice???? Check!
Father vs son????? Check!
Friend vs friend???? Check!
Lover vs lover? INCOMING!!!!!

In fact, Im calling for a brother vs brother in the near future!!!!!

Thing is that, with the annual releases -even TWO in 2014- poor writers will run out of stories......

I actually always thought an AC game with twins would be great- one who follows in his family's footsteps with the Assassins, the other who turns to the Templars (or vice-versa, if the family was originally Templars). The twist is, they could have both DNA strands avaliable, allowing the player to choose which twin's storyline they'd like to follow. If Ubisoft got really creative, they could even make a co-op-ish game in which the players take on roles of the twins and play with eachother in some missions and against eachother in others.

Taking advantage of a pretty famous family feud within a chinese Imperial famility called the Xuanwu Gate Incident, http://chaoyuanxu.deviantart.com/ deviced this fan art:

That idea has been hunting me ever since.....

Arno's dad was an Assassin, Elise's dad was a Templar

Early game spoiler
Arno's dad gets killed, out of respect for his enemy Elise's dad adopts Arno and he and Elise grow up together and develop their relationship, Elise is secretly being trained to become a Templar, some years later Elise's dad gets killed, Arno gets blamed for it and it seems he's thrown in prison where he meets that rough looking Assassin that nicknames Arno "pisspot" Arno learns about his father from the assassin who also teaches him to use a sword, some time after they escape Arno's joins the Assassins

To make the game interesting and because they follow their fathers' ideals.

This! and also to have conflict cause for some reason it's a must in everything these days XD
and to show that sometimes love conquers all and sometime it doesn't either way i won't be surprised by Elise or Arno choice.

You both gave me a heart attack with the epic idea and the epic artwork! Dear Ubisoft, what should I do to make you turn this to a game? donate a kidney? sell my soul to the devil? what? Im ready!

Arno's father an Assassin and Elise's dad being a Templar is not a good reason for both following in their footsteps. Connor's father was an Assassin (His father, Edward was an Assassin also) who turned Templar but Connor decided to side with the Assassins, knowing his father was a Templar. Of course Connor hated his father so that might have something to do with his decision but someone's offspring doesnt necessarily have to join the side that their parents choose.

Haytham was never an Assassin, and Connor started training as an Assassin before he even knew Haytham was a Templar. And Ziio was affiliated with the Assassins, or at least Achilles, so in a way Connor kind of did follow in a parent's footsteps.
