and yes I am British and was brought up on films like "Battle of Britain", "633 Squadron" and "The Dambusters" - all great films!

Also I quite like the B17 and P51 - (you have to admire the courage of the guys who flew bombing missions over Germany in broad daylight - terrifying)

Most beautiful has to be the Spit lX.

b25 for bomber (someone quoted "it just looks like WW2-ish"...I agree). Plus anything plane that has a variant with 12 forward firing .50 cals has got to be beautiful!

P40 is the coolest though...

This thread must prove that one man's Champagne is another man's mouthwash.

Well, for me the Spitfires are most graceful, Fw190s (all variants) most functional and appealing.

Then there are all the 51s, the 109s, the Laggs, the....I just like WWII prop a/c.

Ju-87, any model.
I'm drawn to it by its silhouette, gullwings and its functionality as a divebomber. Also its reputation gives extra character.

For fighterplanes I would have to contemplate between Spit, Mig-3, Dora and BF-109.
Sometimes it takes a little edge to look good, so in my book it isn't necessarily beautifull if it is all sleek and smooth.

This aircraft won the British airspeed record in 1939 and was developed in 1953 to carry multiple thermo-nuclear devices. It's design was copied by the USSR and also resulted in the Concorde's aerodynamic development.

So many to choose......

I love the late war luftwaffe planes Do335, He162, Go229 (Ho229), He 219, Ar234 etc......

But I have to agree with ShVAK that the KYUSHU J7W1 SHINDEN is one of the most beautiful designs to emerge from WWII.

http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/ceramic/shinden.jpg

Saying that I find it strange that no one seem to have mentioned the Tigercat or for that matter the Bearcat so far.

Further the Tempest MkII also needs to get a vote.

This is tough (excluding jets):

Most functional looking (made for business as was said): FW-190A

Non-fighter: B-25 & Stuka

The plane that looks like it wants to kick your a$$ the most : Typhoon/Tempest (no contest)

Most pleasing to the eye: Spitifre Mk.VIII

Plane that looks like it was born to race the most: Yak-9U

But if I had to pick one.....the Bf.109F/G. This thing just looks like an evil shark swimming through the sky. In the air, it looks like it is hunting. On the ground, it looks like it is thinking about hunting.
