I seriously believe he is one of the most talented people alive! He has created what I think to be one of the best if not the best soundtrack of all time with AC2!

Yeah, AC2 is still untouchable as far as the OST goes. No other AC title has come close IMO.

No other game! PERIOD!

Yeah, it's definitely in the top 3 of any game I've ever played. The only real competition for me is RDR... Gat dayum, that "Already Dead" track is like a sucker punch straight to the feels.

No acu has three composers none of who are jesper kyd... so far the soundtrack sound like the worst so far... so I don't think unitys soundtrack will be something to brag about.

My favourite soundtrack to listen to is ACR (followed probably by AC4). The problem I have with Jesper's solo soundtracks is that so few of the tracks are listenable outside of the game for me. It's not a bad thing per se, as Jesper's indeed great and soundtracks enhance the atmosphere greatly, but a lot of them sound just plain boring outside of the game (which is why I don't want to judge any of the ACU tracks until I hear them in tandem with the game itself). There are some tracks that I like only because I've played the game and have created contextual associations with them (I love Acre Underworld from AC1, for example, but until I've actually played AC1, on PC, I didn't have any emotions for it). And I know some people don't agree with me on this one, but, hey, that's what I think :p

And regardless of how greatly a soundtrack enhances the atmosphere, for me the main indicator of how good a soundtrack is is how listenable it is outside of the game. And ACR is VERY listenable. Outside of a few of Jesper's combat tracks (I don't think there's a single combat track that Jesper has made that I like), it's three CDs of AC music that I can listen to without really skipping anything. Which is more than I can say for any other AC game.

But I guess this also means I prefer Brian Tyler other Jesper, as heretic as this may sound. But I can listen to almost whole of AC4 soundtrack all day. If we compare AC2 35 track soundtrack with AC4 34 track soundtrack, I've got a lot more that I like in the AC4 one than I do in AC2 one.

I think you're forgetting a lot of film soundtracks. Ennio Morricone, for example? Jerry Goldsmith?

In recent films, we've had There Will Be Blood, Moon, Enemy, Gravity. [edit] "The Assassination of Jesse James" - I still haven't seen the film, and I still had to buy that soundtrack!

Even if we're just talking about game soundtracks, try this from 9 years ago:

It's all subjective, man! I haven't heard any of AC:U's soundtrack yet so I can't judge, but I think AC3 had the worst soundtrack of the series. Many people love it.
So I think it's a bit early to say AC:U's soundtrack will be "the worst so far".

Edit: That said, soundtrack works best in context. That's the whole point of it, as opposed to 'regular' music. It mostly determines the atmosphere of a game or movie, so let's wait and see how AC:U will turn out first.

I didn't like Jesper Kyd's soundtracks if I'm honest. Wasn't a fan of the female sopranos in the themes and especially ambient music.

He's certainly up there with the greatest, his music is some of the best I've ever heard. But I wouldn't say he's the greatest.

Out of all the AC composers however, he's undeniably the best at scoring AC games. AC2's soundtrack played a huge role in the game's success, it's one of the things the game was praised to the heavens for by fans and critics alike. I'd even go as far as to say that it masked a great deal of its flaws. The races are yawn inducing, and at times frustrating for example - but with Venice Rooftops playing in the back you're almost oblivious to the humdrum checkpoint chasing and it becomes an infinitely more pleasant experience.

His work did wonders for the series.

It's all subjective, man! I haven't heard any of AC:U's soundtrack yet so I can't judge, but I think AC3 had the worst soundtrack of the series.

So do I. It's riddled with unmemorable bombastic tracks which I find unfitting for the franchise, and which would be better suited to a Hollywood action movie. The more subdued/ambient and unreleased material is better, but a portion of it wasn't even used in the game. I have every AC soundtrack downloaded and play them quite frequently (especially during periods where I study for exams), but AC3's is the only one I find unpleasant to listen to after a few tracks in. Not a fan of it at all.

ACR's soundtrack outclassed AC3's because Lorne's contributions gelled nicely with Jesper's, which is why I'd have preferred it if Kyd and Balfe collaboratively scored AC3. Kyd doing his gameplay/atmospheric/ambient stuff and Balfe doing the cutscene/cinematic/set piece stuff. If Ubi continued rocking that combo everyone would be happy.

I guess you could be right since I didn't hear any.. that proves that he should stick with ac... doing something that can bring the best out of him and this series... I mean unity sounds so generic and doesn't really help to immerse yourself in Paris while it did with all his other soundtracks!

I agree to an extent. While it's nice to always have Jesper, I also like there's a transition between each composer, because all of their styles fit the selective game in a way.

My biggest dream is to have Kyd, Balfe, and Hans Zimmer compose an AC Soundtrack...It would be breathtaking.

Hell, let Zimmer Compose one someday ;)

And I'm with you on Unity's Soundtrack, not only does it sound generic, but also very uninspired as well. Just no "Depth" or "Pop" at all...

I love Jesper’s work. However, I believe Lorne Balfe’s work on AC:R soundtrack is better. I also HIGHLY admire the Desmond’s Journey and The Lost Archive soundtracks and I’m not sure if it was Jesper or Lorne’s work.

I love that track, but I actually prefer the unreleased variation that wasn't used in the game:

Also, this is an example of (as you mentioned) his more moving and emotive tracks. Those vocals did an excellent job of trembling the emotions during the earlier scenes in the game. (Not referring to the sex scene btw).

So annoyed they put "Madam" on the official soundtrack and not this.

The part at the very end of that track is what they used for the death sound in AC2-ACR. Also, there's a full AC1 soundtrack on YouTube which has almost all of the unreleasd music from the game, it's about 4 hours long.

I agree. But Mayrice coming in like that with the facetious post was bound to provoke a reaction, it goes both ways.
This topic is purely subjective, it's perfectly fine to consider a particular piece of music the greatest ever (as long as your views aren't being expressed as fact and forcibly imposed on others). If someone hailed AC3's soundtrack as the best thing since Beethoven, they simply can't be told they're wrong, it all boils down to taste.

I never said that all Kyd's music (and by Kyd's music I mean his AC music specifically) doesn't work outside of games. Just pretty much more then half of it :p I also never said he wasn't a great composer. His music is great in that it enhances the atmosphere of the game greatly, and games like AC1, AC2, ACB just wouldn't be the same without Kyd's music. Listen-ability also has a lot to do with context (also, btw, taste :p As neither me nor you are the ultimate truth in that matter ;) :D ).

For example, you linked to Acre Underworld. I've mentioned that track in my post you replied to. I love that track. But when I heard it before I played the game, it was boring as **** to me. But with additional context from playing the game, it became awesome.

Stuff like Ezio's theme trio of music (Earth, Family, Venice Rooftops), I loved it even before I played the game. But things like Venice Escape or Venice Combat, even after playing the game it's 'meeeeeh' at most to me when listening outside of the game.

And, ultimately, I never EVER implied that music not really being listen-able outside of the game is a bad thing. Just that for me, personally, a soundtrack is higher on the favourite list if I can normally listen to more music from it outside of the game.
