The inability to save a mission in the campaign torpedoed SH2 for me.

Currently I'm playing CM: BtB, IL-2:FB (every Saturday me and the boys have "Flight Night" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ), BF:Vietnam, Far Cry, UT2K4, and NeverWinter Nights.

SH2 saves a mission from where every you want to leave the game from. You can start from where you left off or redo what you have already done if you wish.

He is refering to the "save bug". If you save your game in the middle of a mission, then a number of things happen next time you load up. Most notably, enemy destroyers become "nerfed". They will become very passive when you are submerged, usually not even trying to sink you, or recognizing that you are there, even after you attack the convoy they are escorting. A number of other bugs occure as well, like previously completed mission goals suddenly becoming "uncompleted", graphical bugs in your sub, and a few others. Basically, if you do not want these things to happen, you cannot save your game during missions.

And to make matters worse, this cannot be fixed without accsess to the source code, which Ubi will not(and probably never will) release.

Sorry to rain on your parade and be the bearer of bad news. I know when I first found out the truth behind the "save Bug", it totally ruined the game for me, or rather i should say, it ruined the Pacific Aces mod for me.

Hmmmmm, I never noticed that though I did notice that sometimes I would lose the bearing indicator on the UZO, but that even happened if I didn't save. I do seem to recall my attacking some US escorts in the last mission (on the way to Argentina) that they didn't seem to interested in finding me (yes I have the PM patches for both games though I don't think that helped that problem). I will have to try that mission again when I can spend more time on it.

Bear in mind that DDs that are spawned from airbases, such as many of the ones you'll meet in Pacific Aces, are still aggressive after a save. I only mention this because it has confused people in the past.

The stock campaign and missions only use bases for aircraft, so DDs in those will always be tame after a save. Unless you surface.

In a word.....no. Why? Cos theres no Dynamic Campaign.

TonyPiech
05-26-2004, 08:01 AM
Kinda similar to TonyEH (above); the canned campaign mode in SH2 makes it somewhate boring and not playable after awhile. Unfortunately I'm seeing, after reading some posts in this forum, that SH3 will be out without a dynamic campaign. That missing feature will probably make SH3 just as bad as SH2 -- it will only look prettier.

I hope I'm wrong in this current assessment, and that SH3 arrives with an option to run with a dynamic campaign, but who knows -- we'll have to wait and see.

HeibgesU999

If they have BASES in SH3 that can launch all manner and size of enemy units, and not just aircraft, the dynamic campaign will be extremely simple to put together.

If the BASES in SH3 don't work like this, it will be a sad day in Mudville.

Convoys spawned in this manner will have to have a DESTINATION attached to them when they are spawned, and an AI that can plot a realistic course to the DESTINATION.

The one problem I found with a dynamic campaign generator was that the campaign and a mission in the campaign will be hard to edit and get past if you have a PC problem. I had one in iL2:FB on a Berlin map where I would crash out of the game and could not get past that part no matter what. I finally found the right files to edit and when I went to replay the mission that I was crashing on, I got to complete it (had to set instant win), the game crashed as I went to go to the next mission. While I got the mission, there was no map for the briefing to even be able to fly the mission. I lost an entire campaign because of that and was extrememly bummed out. I couldn't have been but 5 missions or so from the end of the campaign.

I'm only playing four games at the moment; in order of frequency:

- Silent Hunter 2
- Destroyer Command
- Carnivores 2
- Carnivores Ice Age

The last two are old hunting games that take you into the era of dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals respectively. I wish there were more recent sequels; they're both wonderful.

I love flight sims, but lack the ability to react quickly in combat. IL-2 is great, but it's just too hard for me. Same for the CFS games - I always get shot down before I can even line up on the target.

At least with a sub, you know which way's up. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, i am hoping that the devs do a better job with the actual game play in SH3. We all know at this point that the campaign system is not going to be what we all want, so lets hope they do a great job with the A.I., keeping the bugs out of the game, and the rest of the things that sucked about SH2. Then, once again, i will have to rely on the modding comunity to do their magic and give me a dynamic campaign.

You know, i wonder if the devs are thinking the same thing. Why would they go throught the trouble of making a truely dynamic campaign when they know that they could just be cheap, give us scripted ****, and then the comunity modders will give it the best dynamic campaign they can. The devs know people will buy the game anyhow, so whats the point of going through all the trouble of trying to please people. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif
