Here's a painting by Graham Cotton which recreates the moment Warrant Officer Tadeusz Szymanski encountered a V-1 on the afternoon of July 12th, 1944.

http://server6.uploadit.org/files/simplysimon-FlyingBombs_WP.jpg

Tadeusz Szymanski was on a combat mission with 316 Squadron on July 12th, 1944 when he spotted a doodlebug on course for London.
This is Tadeuz's own story of the encounter.

"I started shooting and saw strikes before my ammunition was finished, but the bomb kept on a
dead-level course. Over the town of Hastings I moved into close formation to get a close look
at it. The thing was jerking along and the elevator was flapping with each vibration of the
crude jet motor. I noticed there were no ailerons and on the front of the bomb was a
silly little propeller. It looked ridiculous. We didn't know at the time but this was the
aiming device set to dive the bomb into the ground after so many miles.

I decided to try and tip the doodlebug up with my wing tip. The flight was controlled by
gyroscopes and if you turn a gyroscope more than 90 degrees it goes haywire. As soon as
I put my port wing under the doodlebug's wing, it started lifting and I banked to starboard.
I repeated this manoeuvre eleven times but each time it went over so far and then came back.
By now the barrage balloons protecting London were in sight and I was becoming rather anxious.

I tried a different manoeuvre, hitting it very hard with my wing tip as I went up into a loop.
When I recover my position I found, to my dismay, that the doodlebug was flying
perfectly safe and level - but upside down! Suddenly it dived out of control and crashed
in open countryside."

Taken from "Flying Bombs over England" by H.E. Bates.

So here's my recreation of Tadeuz's encounter as depicted by Graham Cotton's painting.

OK so the viewing angle's off and the scenery isn't quite right...
...but have you tried taking out a V-1 yet? This was probably my 100th attempt!!!

Neat stuff. I haven`t tried tipping a V1 yet, but that`s partly cos I do everything in Campaign and so far I`ve never seen the V1 used in them.

I have Taran a bomber though in my I16. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ive finally got it, but I was a 1 in 10 in tipping them buggers. A whole lot of mid air explosions.

Did you make the skin as well? I like it but I think the panel lines need to be less obvious. Just me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes I did.
Thanks for the comment - I may make that layer slightly more transparent then.

The thing about panel-lines though - you can't please all the people all of the time can you?

Call me stupid if this is wrong but... In the painting that looks like a P-51C,and the one in your screen looks like a P-51B.But a very good job on the skin, congrats http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The first time i ever tipped a V-1 was in a P-51C at about 500km/h with a Spit on my 6 on my first flight.I saw it whizzed past it a it tumbled to the ground http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yes! Well done - you spotted the obvious mistake! (not really - I hadn't noticed http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif) until someone else pointed this out over at simhq.

The hard part in tipping those V-1s (other than actually tipping them without blowing up) is keeping eyes on them from range - I was circling, waiting for it to take off, it did but I was facing the wrong way, circled round and....where's the bugger gone? I could still hear it, fading into the distance but with no labels I just couldn't find it!

Nice skin - and a great painting.

Strange..?
I don't have that problem - the smoke trail makes them fairly easy to spot for me - but actually catching them now that's a problem!
