View Full Version : What do you look for in your warplanes?

What do you like in your warplanes? What about your plane selection makes you tick? Are you a bad shot, so you use a plane with a lot of ammunition and a wide spread? Are you an excellent shot, but prefer low speed turnfights to high speed energy fights? Do you like to get down low and dirty? Or do you prefer staying high and safe? Are you a better fighter pilot, fighter-bomber pilot, or bomber pilot? What makes you tick in tune with your planes?

My accuracy tends to be generally good, and I prefer maneuverability most times over speed. However, I want my plane to be well armored. I also want it to hit hard. Therefore, I find my best list of planes to generally be:

Yak series (preferably the Yak-1's)
P-40E's
P-47D-27
Bf-109E-7/B's
Bf-109F-4's
I-153P
B-239

However, that's not to say that I don't occasionally fly the P-51B's and P-38's.

Well, howabout you guys?

How I like my aircraft. I'll list some apparent negative aspects as a result.

Features:

1.) Very fast, great power/weight ratio. Thus #4
2.) Very good visibility all around, especially behind the 3-9 line.
3.) Powerful gun(s) that deliver a good punch, perfect for one shot one kill.
4.) Great climb-rate and dive capabilities.
5.) Decent roll rate.
6.) Good low(!)/high speed handling.
7.) Don't bleed excessive amounts of E in various maneuvers.

Resulting Negative aspects:

1.) Very light armor.
2.) Poor armor for Pilot.
3.) Very low ammo count.
4.) Possible a bad turner (not important).
5.) Possible bad high speed handling (not important).
6.) Possible small fuel tank.

Basically any BF-109. If I could improve it slightly I would wish for a bit more speed and the ability to offload some ammunition to improve performance further.

Also, here is how I rate the most important factors in an aircraft:

1.) Speed.
2.) Speed. I thought this was worth mentioning twice.
3.) Climb-rate.
4.) Low speed handling.
5.) Armament.
6.) Visibility.
7.) Roll-rate.
8.) E-retention, ability to keep energy.

Far down the list like on 1 millionth place is turn-rate and armor.

P-38s, because they bite you in the *** if you do something wrong, but are oh-so-sweet for quick turning shots or shoot and scoot passes. Unfortunately I find I can rarely fly it as most servers seem to have grossly higher numbers of allied pilots than axis. So, I instead find myself in the cockpit of a Fw-190 most of the time. What I like about this one is if you hit anything, it's likely going to be hurting for the rest of the fight. You can run quite fast and dive well, and earlier models will even allow you some leeway in turning. But the price for this comes in the nasty snap-stall that will result from pushing the plane around, and takes a lot of luck to make kills with given that if anything knows you're there, your strike passes will be less successful.

For the most part, I prefer a plane that can climb well, dive well, high VNE, good altitude performance, and excellent firepower. I also prefer to have a plane that is durable with good endurance.

P-38s
P-47s
Fw-190s
IL-2s
La-5s (La-7s are exempt - 5FN has better view)

109 K-4, G-14.
30mm canon is my fav. I usually go in very close to unload the 30mm's, a few rounds is all I need. 20% of the time my plane is demage by the resulting enemy target blowing up and I can get up to 8 kills + in quick mission (off line).

I also like its power and its ability to do very tight manouvers. I would like to have more armour though and more 30mm amo.

Unfortunately for me, I don't know the game well enough to know why I fly the planes that I do. I like the ride is about as close as I can get really.

Allied (In order of flight preference)

P-38L
P-47D-27
Spitfire IXe
P-51B
P-51D
La-7

Axis (again in order of flight preference)

Bf-109G14 (F4 on other occasions interchangeable here)
FW190A6
Bf-110G2
FW190D9
Bf-109E

I really enjoy the biplanes, for fun factor, but as I don't know off the top of my head which catagory they go in, nor would I generally fly them on a server, they are not listed here.

for 1944-45 mission, Ta 152 is my first choice if see it in a plane's selection because I like a simple tactic that is hit&run( like he11) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif , I'll take fuel 100 % ( I can fly longer then the mission run then I no need to landing in DF-server which rotate map) and climb at 7000 meter along and fly around opponent air base looking for moving dot below , check anyone at 5k if no one cover the base then I will select a last dot or the dot that fly direct line ( don't awareness in danger ) and make more room to drive from the sun at 850 km/h , mostly I like to fly pass over 650 km/h make a short brush at 150meter ( at 100 meter not enough for pull out from ram ) and run like he11 back to base to make a next enter , that is most fun for me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Flights sweep not make much a point)

190D and 109Gs is my next list , Mk 108 and deflection shooting helps me all the time.

For Allied
P-38 J,L this plane is most challenging and classic for me when I play Allied 1943-44 mission, it is most fun to surprise my 109 friends when he see P-38 at 7000 meter http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I like high cr@p factors.

It cant get much cr@ppier than a J8 or Cr42.
The il-2 is pretty cr@ppy too, atleast as a fighter.
In a Tb3 I just cant stop laughing, especially not when I am gaining on a fighter in a dogfight.

Stukas are also in the category, I like the one wich have 20mm cannons and have the gunsight mounted upsidedown blocking the view forward. Its fun to dogfight spits and p40's and see hits on their wings...as long as it lasts.

The Hurricane MKIIc is kindof fun. It gets even funnier when the 109 that climbs away 700m from u remebers that this variant of hurri have cannons and not the softairgun mg's of its cousin MkIIb.

I have unusual criteria when I choose my favourite plane.

First.I choose 'em because the way they look (another words No#1=my subjective beauty factor)
Second.Speed
Third.Other criteria (heavily depends on my mood in the moment of choosing)

Long nose P39, Ta152, Fw190D, and GAS, G10. Sometimes P51 and Stuka. Others chosen by mood that moment...

Anything that holds my interest. I mainly fly the P-51C or D. A little less frequently the Bf109E4 or maybe an F or G model. If I'm reading up on 8th Airforce actions in the ETO and there's a bit about a ME 163 attack, I'll fly that because it was an interesting read. I'll fly an Il*2 against a very low bomber formation for yuks. A Zero against a flight of Brewsters is fun, as is flying a Brewster against a Hurricane. I'll fly a P-47 with extra ammo against an Me 323. If I am reading about the Battle of britain, maybe I'll fly a Spit V against a 109E4- but I won't use the cannon. Or I'll fly a 109E4 against a Hurri, or maybe a French Hawk.

If I'm feeling skillful, it's P-40 vesus anything. Wish i was better at the P-40 and P-38. I'm still struggling to learn to fly a FW190 well.

If it interests me, I fly it

The "Cr@p"plane word is an expression of devotion for planes of an earlier era or veteran planes, crafts with low survivability and therefore have a high coolfactor = cr@pfactor.

I think it depends on the mission.

For jabo: Loadout, armor, steady gun platform, durability.

For escort: High altitude performance, acceleration and E-retention.

For intercept: Climb, armament, speed and durability.

For DF's: Maneuverability, firepower, climb.

Current favorites overall:
Ground pounding = P-47D (Allies) and Fw-190A-8 (Germany);
Escort = P-51D and Fw-190A-8;
Intercept = P-38L and Fw-190D-9;
DF = Spit Mk IXe and Bf 109G-6.

Historical accuracy and appropriateness is big with me. I like the E-4, but I'm not much interested in taking on a Mk IXe in one, etc.
