Jumps to external view and gives you player to nearest enemy aircraft view. Further presses cycle through enemies within padlock range. Unlike the F4 padlock it is not restricted to aircraft within the pilot's field of view and is not broken by cloud or other visual obstructions. Perhaps it would be better name AI view instead of external padlock http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm with BaldieJr.

PS. Thanks, Tully!

Any landing you can walk away from is a good one!

Hey, in almsot three years of playing Il-2, I never knew about this function! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Thanx for spoiling the game for me, man! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I want one of these to replace my rice!

No I have cockpit on............but I use the externals a lot when watching the tracks after a session online, if something of interest happened.
I probably examine tracks more than I fly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif well, I have taken up too much space on the forum lately. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/34.gif

I use F6 to get into action more quickly. Got flying on some FR servers for 45min+ without anybody ever reporting a sighting (though they were shot down or made some kills) and I never saw neither friend nor foe.

I have no shame!!

I use it all the time, I am an F6 *****.

I love how it requires absolutely no skill and negates any actual flying ability, with a super omnipresent all seeing eye!

rather like that big eyeball in lord of the rings!

on a serious note- and i know a lot of you may jump on this, i like externals, and i like f6.

i have tried full real and i can see why some would love it, but i dont i find it boring, and i dont have the time or the monitor.

another point is that many see f6 as the noobie's choice, how it makes u a worse pilot.

i disagree, i think that there are some cracking pilots in externals servers and some fascinating and exciting engagements, and often the ability to never lose your target, whilst unrealistic (whatever that means) makes it far more difficult, and a more tense balance of energy states and skill.

i love externals and i love f6, weak possibly, however it doesnt mean your a worse pilot, just less of a masochist.

finally its looks better!

fly bys! look at other engagments!

Uh oh.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I'm glad to find another F6 *****, but I don't want this to turn into a flame fest. It doesn't matter who is the better pilot, it's about how each and everyone decides to play the game for themselves.

09-01-2004, 04:57 AM
I know http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

im conscious of that

no flame intended- ive seen so many respected forum members falling over themselves to point out their ignorance of the f6 option.

dismissing it out of hand as the noobies choice, as u say thought it not about pilot skill, but choice

cheers and sorry for the semi-flame

I only fly with externals on when in coops with close friends, and even then we are only allowed to use externals when we die (So you can still watch the action) and are never allowed to alert another person of a bounce in progress. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

That said, I really wish there was an "Externals on death, crash, bail, or landing" feature in FB. There is just so much missed when externals are on forever; good fights, etc.

That said, with externals on, the sim seems more like a game to me and not an immursive sim. Dogfights turn into turn tests, and there is hardly ever a time where someone uses an energy advantage to affect a nice bounce on an enemy (They always see you coming)

But the planes look so nice, the graphics and explosions, etc. are all missed with externals switched off. (Again, I sure wish the above option was available)

With you 100% Fehler,I only use externals when flying squad coops,to watch the action if / when i go down.As for F6,no,i'm confused enough already with the buttons i do use (X45,TiR) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Never use except for training purposes and when I was first a noobie

"That said, I really wish there was an "Externals on death, crash, bail, or landing" feature in FB."

Would make a good option. Or even an option where you can 'be in the eyes' of a teammate.

I use it alot, and I see no reason why I shouldn't, after all I'm not sitting in a real cockpit. I don't have track IR yet, but when I do, things will change.

Oberleutnant Oskar-Walter Romm thoughts on his aircraft.

"I found the Fw 190D-9 to be greatly superior to those of my opponents. During dogfights at altitudes of between about 10,000 and 24,000ft, usual when meeting the Russians, I found that I could pull the D-9 into a tight turn and still retain my speed advantage. In the descent the Dora-9 picked up speed much more rapidly than the A type; in the dive it could leave the Russian Yak-3 and Yak-9 fighters standing."

Never have used it but I don't have anything against people who do. I didn't know what it did until I read Tully's explanation.

I use externals offline when I get bored and see what the other planes are doing if I crash.

I doubt I'll mess with it though, I had enough trouble flying a plane and I don't feel like learning something new re: virtual flying tactics http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Interesting, sofar fewer people use it than I expected. But on a server that does allow it don't you feel that other people who do use it might have an advantage?

Edit: oh and if you don't use it, what kind of external views do you use? If none then what is your preferred method of looking around inside the cockpit?

I don't find it to be an advantage, as I easily lose my orientation when flying in F6 view and end up crashing into the ground or in an un-recoverable spin while using it. If someone else has mastered it, more power to them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I use it all the time for it's most basic function: hit it once to locate the closest enemy. Go back to cockpit view and turn towards the enemy and then acquire him visually. Proceed to the fight!

I never fly with it as my main view for more than a second.

I don't get hung-up on FR vs. arcade or whatever. Some nights I want to get into a fight quickly. In those cases, I'll go to a server with more relaxed settings and use F6.
Other times I want a greater challenge and go to a server with more restricted settings.

One thing I do not like and won't use is
"cockpit off."

good point mate

strange as it is- i hate no cockpit as well

wait for it...

i find it ruins the immersion!!!

im very idiosyncratic
