So I'm flying along this morning & look over & see me & another plane converging at an angle, so I give way to the right & now the guy is on my six, about a hundred yards back & I'm thinking: Split-S is out; he'd be able to get off a good shot, ripping off one of my wings, & I'd spiral 1500 feet into the Puget Sound, and I could even imagine the combustible blue spray of 100LL avgas erupting around me...

But he crossed over quickly and was sweeping away, straight & level, off my right wingtip & I knew I could take him, rolling easily onto his six & opening up with my wing-mounted cannon!

I glanced over at the Pitot-tube & realized, for the first time, how INADEQUATELY armed the Cessna Skyhawk is!

My left hand tightened on the yoke, forefinger finding the Mic button, applying a little pressure. I designated a blemish on the windscreen as the gunsight & squinted down it. My right hand twitched, gripping the throttle knob, applying power...

...and then a radio crackled & a clear voice said: Six Mike Echo, I'm not recieving any Altitude information from your transponder.

And I winced & went, "Must be malfunctioning, let me see if I can fix it." Actually, I'd forgotten to turn it on during my run-up, but wasn't about to tell him (and everyone else with a Comm Radio) that. So I switched it from SBY to ALT...and the ATC came back on & said; "Recieving information now, Six Mike Echo..."

And I looked over & my adversary was already several miles to the north & moving away at a rapid clip...

I'd missed my oportunity...

Carry a sidearm. You just point it out the window and start shootin. No worries about aligning anything.

FAA reads this thread they will Regulate the FB.

Dude/dudette you made that up anyway. As much as I try to remind myself to do, when I am on top of radio tower I *never* think about how much I would love to use Kai's brace, Cleopatra's web-launcher and rocket boots, or be embraced in Superman's arms like Lois. I'm too panicking and busy getting done and get down before some Noob pilot comes up and hangs in the guy wires pretending to be flying over the FB and its scary cos you know they like sea level dogfighting in the onwhine servers.

When you realize how many pilots up there sim the FB, you get done FAST and get off the tower FAST. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

If I ever come to Seattle I'll be happy to take the rear gunner position in your Cessna.

I've always thought Cessna undermodelled their aircraft.

Hehe, I know what you mean, I was with my flight instructor at 3000 ft two past Sundays ago, and another plane crossed our six o' clock, so I immediately put the plane into a skid. (Since it was only my second lesson, my instructor was a bit surprised that I knew this maneuver, but then again, I know a lot more than he thinks I know)
I was ready to skid to the other side, but then my instructor brought me to my senses as I looked about the panel for the AIM-9 Sidewinder arming button... (okay fine, that last paragraph was a joke, but the first one really happened)

Can't say I've ever tried ACM in a Cessna, although there was one time my former instructor tried to get on my six in a 172 (I was in a Tomahawk at the time). I think I denied him the shot.

One thing I have done after a flying holiday though is go a bit brain dead in a car - seeing some red traffic lights ahead and wishing to slow to a stop I *almost* tried to straighten up with the pedals and lower some flaps using the handbrake. Just caught myself, with some amusement.

Cheers, SSS

Hi,

Talking of driving, many times I have wished for a Mk108 (although, it wouldn't be firing through the block with a traverse lump) when stuck behind some grandad.

Or, to pull a nice barrel roll, ending up on the 6 of the moron who was sitting on my back bumper, to find a nice firing opportunity.

Trade your Cessna Skyhawk for a P-51 or something. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi ,

You don't actually need conventional weapons on your plane. It's very easy infact. Open your window, take a deep breath, and yell "bangity, bang, bang!". If you can yell as loud as my wife can, it will have the effect of an MK108 at close range.

Cheers and beers,
Fritz
