View Full Version : For your USAAF Listening Pleasure

Can't find my original UBI post on this subject (It IS still on the SimHQ forums, of course)...

So

I'll repeat it here:
If you fly as USAAF,and wantsome additional WWII-era immersion, download these for something completely different:

http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/flightsims/oberstguncam/SoundFiles/WW2Radio.zip

http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~chapman/flightsims/oberstguncam/SoundFiles/WW2Radio2.zip

These unzipped wav files will provide WWII era 1940's radio broadcast music for your listening enjoyment (In Cockpit!!!) on your USAAF P47 or P51 escort or ground attack missions, especially as you are enroute to a distant target area(30 minutes each of listening pleasure as you scan the various radio frequencies, looking for some distracting entertainment before you get to the target area). You will still hear your wingman/command element radio calls....

Place the "WW2Radio.wav" OR the "WW2Radio2.wav" file into your Samples/Music/InFlight folder, after removing/relocate any other *.wav file in that folder.

I STRONGLY recommend that you NOT just Play these downloaded/unzipped Wav files in your Windows Media Player...just unzip the files, place One or the Other in the Samples/Music/InFlight Folder,(Remove/Save to elsewhere any other *.wav files in that folder, as FB will Randomly 'Play' ALL/ANY files in the Samples/Music/InFlight Folder!).... then Go Fly.

Of course, Remember to have your FB sound/music toggle options "ON" for In-Flight 'music'... In FB sound setup, I set the "Music" volume about the same as the "Objects" volume setting... Play with it...until you find the right Feel; unfortunately, FB will allow you to adjust "relative" volumes Only if you ESC to your Hardware Controls and Re-adjust).The "WWII radio reception should be low volume 'underneath"/"behind" the Other ambient Cockpit sounds, such as Engine noise, etc, and the Other Radio communications....

Let me know, again, what you think!!!!...

I have a third "WWII Radio Selections" file to be released in the next few days....and a Fourth which will be for the Pacific Flyers! That one will have, of course, radio broadcasts by the infamous 'Tokyo Rose'...

Of the first two "WW2 Radio" files, I recommend that you run/play the Second one first...the 'WW2Radio2.wav' file... A bit more realism and variety..

BUT, the Best is yet to come....!!! Radio3 and Radiopacific!!!!

Let me know what you think...

OberstWiley,
Thanks for the music, however I may be missing something. I have only "intro" and "menu" folders in my fb\samples\music folder, not one for inflight. Is this a folder I can add, or did I misunderstand something here? Thanks again!

I tried just adding an "inflight" folder to fb\samples\music and it worked! Now, how can I make it to where the inflight music plays, but not that annoying anthem music in the menus? And, couldn't I just replace all the menu music with stuff I want, or does it specifically look for nationality named wav files? TiA

In Your FB setup screens for sound, you can under Music Screen toggle off the takeoff and crash 'music', leaving only the "Inflight" music toggled on. You will continue to get the Anthems during the Menu screens and after ending a mission...If you don't want those "Anthems", just move the Menu folder and intro folder someplace else, away from being in the samples/music folder. If there is no folder, you will not hear the anthems even though you have in FB General Sound setup screen toggled "Play Music" on.

I Only have the InFlight folder in my samples/music Folder.

As for the nationality Wav files, you can place any wav file to replace them, just renaming your file the same, for example de.wav These files play only for the particular nationality when you fly it, so that when flying as a German Flyer, you will hear the music in the de.wav, Whatever music you want to Call "de.wav"...

The In-Flight music plays for whatever nationality you are flying. I identify my "radio selections" as being for USAAF listening pleasure because they are primarily composed of US/English brtoadcasts/songs, etc... As in real life, of course, the "airwaves" are free so there is nothing to keep a Luftwaffe pilot from tuning in some good American Jazz or Swing on his FW190 radioset...as he is flying up to engage the waves of Ami B17 bombers http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Likewise, I expect in some of my upcoming "Radio Selections" a Mustang jockey might roll across some German beer-drinking Oompah tunes being broadcast out of Munich...

And...we all know the anecdote (perhaps true)about the Japanese aircraft enroute to Pearl Harbor tuning in to a Hawaiian radio station to use it in direction-finding to help fine tune their heading to Oahu/honolulu/Pearl....

Here's something confusing:

I decided to go and convert some music from mp3 to wav so I could listen to them inflight. The music would switch from song to song after approximately 30 seconds, instead of playing the whole thing. Also, it seems as tho FB doesn't care which folder music is in... when I go back to a menu after a mission, the inflight music keeps playing. I used to just run media player in the background... think I'll go back to that, with Wiley's ambience music in a particular playlist. Anyone else finding the same things I am?

Without going in to play FB right now, as I recall, if you use autopilot, it restarts the wav file at the beginning...or maybe when you return from auto to manual control it happens...the "radio selection" works best, therefore, if one flies In-Cockpit and manually at all times...the sound file Does, however, continue to play(at normal speed) even when you accelerate Time.

I've not experienced the continuing play of teh In-Flight sound/radio selection when I go to Menu, altho it Does continue for a few seconds, maybe 5 seconds...Then, since i have NO Menu folder in my samples/music Folder, I have Silence in the Menu Screen.

I must be seriously missing something here... I have never had any music play of any type during the game or menu screem. is this something that I need to enable somewhere?

So what if its slow and it can't climb for crap... http://server5.uploadit.org/files2/050104-new1.JPG

You need to go to the sounds-menu and turn on music. It's the same place you set radio-chatter loudnes. I usually fly without, but with this little collection, I might reconsider.

As for German pilots, swing was, althoug denounced by G√¬∂bels and the Nazi party as "negro-jewish trash"*, quite popular in Germany. Besides, the first clip has Lill' Marlene and a few other Dietrich-clips in it.

* Althoug no laughing matter, such a statement is so outrageous that it calls for a few smiles.

Fly friendly!
