I have both Cannon and Machine Guns set at 150m http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, considering the low ammo count (60 rpg) and the slow ROF - It's best to set the convergence quite low.

I set mine at 111 metres.

Use the MGs to 'bother' enemy a/c at longer ranges and use the cannons to knock 'em out at close range.

And them hispano's sure do pack a punch at close range!

Don't listen to what anyone says about their convergence, because convergence is like personality.

It's different for every person. Hotspace might like his at 150, but I like mine at 211 for both Cannon and MG's. Start with a wide range and then narrow it down. You will slowly find you're own range. that's the only way.

Each to their own I guess http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

personally, i tend to go for cannon convergence about m closer than machine guns, heres why.

when closing on the target i tend to use the machine guns to aim, wait till theres some shrapnel coming off, then a quick burst or two with the cannons sees the enemy off. but by the time ive finished with my aiming bursts from the machine guns im usually about 50 m closer to the target than i was with the machine guns... this way you have a more ideal convergence for each set of guns

Cannons at 260 meters and machine guns at 245.

I open fire and hit targets at these ranges so its my personal preference.

Thanks!
This topic made me try resetting my convergence, dropped it from 200 to 140, and took a B17 in one pass. Probably just luck!

Just seen a documentary on TV that said guns were 'harmonized', as they put it, at 250 yards.

303's = 225 Hispanos = 150

Did anyone see that or was it just me?

all airforces had guidelines on how gun convergence should be set, but as pilots accrued more experience they tended to persuade their ground crews to give them custom settings without reference to guidelines... ill try and find a link with some supporting evidence for this, i read it in piece of cake, but it was common practise in reality, much like the adding of extra seat armour for the pilot

Should be, historically 225m, I have 200m for all MGs/cannons up to 20mm on all planes..

Altitude, speed, manoeuvre and.... CRASH!

A shorter convergence in turn fighters is better.
100-200 meters.

Set it for 100m, and only shoot at that distance. You'll find you're getting more kills, and saving a lot more ammo.

What BuzzU said.

All MGs lose hitting power down-range as they lose energy in flight. The .303 is the worst of the bunch as rifle-calibre and thusly needs every little bit of energy it can hold onto.

On top of that, specifically related to the Spitfire Vb, look where the MGs are placed.. outboard of the 20mms at the tips of the wings. That's going to seriously screw with your grouping and effectiveness with just four MGs to work with.

Set the MGs in at about 100m so they still have killing power in close and will hit like a shotgun anywhere from 50m to 150m. The Hispanos carry energy downrange very well in part due to their very good muzzle velocity and the HE rounds don't really lose any punch effectiveness.. so the twin hispanos (which are grouped close to the fuselage) are going to be very effective at longer ranges.

Plus, even if you have a longer convergence setting on the hispanos, they will still be effective in close because they are positioned closer to the fuselage so the divergence from the convergence point is not going to be anywhere near as bad as the angle the MGs must take.

Set the cannons at 250-300m to hit your targets at long range and slow them down so you can pound them in close with the MGs and cannon together.

Load up QMB and fly with icons and range on. Everytime you open up with the cannon check what range you are at then you will see what the best convergence setting is for you.

I always suggest this.......

Set it where ever you initially think, then take your fav plane/s to "quick" missions and fly against 1, then 2 fighters you expect to be against often. DO NOT pay attention to the range Icon, simply shoot when you feel most comfortable as in the back of your mind you have a view that instinctively says "now". Not worrying about kills or hits.

Next, save the track file and watch it....See at what range you instinctively shoot as if you do enough of these you'll see there is a pretty common range. Set your MGs to the lower end of that range average, and your cannons 25-50m further.

For me it's 150/175....Yet I sometimes change it for Anti-bomber missions. Perhaps wrongly, I do not set it per plane.....As I pretty much am going to shoot the same ranges for all.

Expect as you fly this to change over time...so every now and then go through this again.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the help guys, I figured setting the converge distance to about 140 is the best setting to me... it seems that I destroy the enemy's elevator, and you're pretty doomed if that happens, especially at low altitudes, right http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
