I don't know what place/era the last character is supposed to represent ... reminds me of Robin Hood for some reason.

I hope it's not the only thing we'll see from Japan. The assassin looks awesome and it makes me even more anxious for an AC : Japan game.

Holy sh*t he looks awesome... so much better than arno's design.

However I would rather have a game in China than Japan because the history there is more 'AC'...

The guy at the end I think is someone from England or Scotland or Scandinavia.... or something. But he looks awesome too.

The Jackdaw is right behind her, so most likely.

I just think it's weird that they'd use two already established characters alongside two randoms from settings AC has never explored.

Saw this picture on their FB page - the Japanese assassin looks awesome. Loving the robes with samurai armoured gauntlets. So awesome!

She didn't want to be an Assassin though, did she?

She didn't want to stay with the Assassins, sure, but she seemed happy enough to help Edward with Assassin business for the moment, presumably since mopping up the Templars also took care of her pirate related vendettas.

Why compare China and Japan ? They're two different cultures

I know!

And that is why, in regards of the necessary east asian setting, I rather have China! Japanīs overall architecture consisted of, other than temples and castles, very widespread one or two storey buildings at most.

This kind of reminds of AC3, there weren't a lot of tall buildings in it either. I don't find the architecture bad at all.Temples and castles aren't the only tall structures in China and Japan, they have Pagodas as well.

I'm with Ze and Megas here. The main reasons I've always been against a Japanese setting for AC are the generally low/boring architecture of most buildings, and the gaming industry's horribly cliched relationship with the subject matter. Whether the game was predictable "samurai vs. ninjas, wooooo!" or "this is totes not a ninja game, guys" I feel walking that already well-trodden path would be a mistake.

China, on the other hand, has been comparatively under represented in games (and generally in Western imagination). The politics and warfare of medieval China are less commonly known, its architecture is more varied and monumental, its penchant for invention would mean some great gadgetry, and most importantly, there aren't already a hundred other stealth based games set in China.

All that aside...the "Robin Hood" on the far right looks waaaay too fantasy for my tastes. I would still dig an AC set in England's High Middle Ages, but not with that absurd costuming.

No they're not :p

There's a difference, temples have 1 or 2 storeys. Pagodas are either tea houses, villas, libraries or restaurants... or all of those because of its multiple floors.

Agreed. Having a Chinese setting offers more freedom and it's history moulds well in the AC universe. Although I like the Feudal Japan setting, creating the main protagonist would be a painstaking process because the Ninja and Assassins are two separate entities, even though they have a lot of similarities. There are many different ninja clans, the two most famous ones are the Iga and Kohga clans. Each clan has it's own set of rules and principles... creating a fictitious clan the abides by the Creed sounds cheesy. Also, I've discussed with Ze about having a Portuguese Assassin in Japan when the Spanish and Portuguese came to Japanese shores, but having a European protagonist in an Asian setting didn't sound good either. So, I'm backing China set during the Ming Dynasty and maybe a Shao Jun game :)

For a male Japanese Assassin I would go with something like this but with a hood, keep it simple.

I dunno if I'm just being weird or something, but I feel like inFAMOUS could pull off a better "historical" Japan setting than Assassin's Creed could. Imagine playing as a ninja with actual super powers :P

Xstantin
07-21-2014, 10:32 PM
@Jexx, no you're not. Superpowers thing is actually easier to pull off when it comes to Japan. In a way it's actually a smart move on Ubi's side not to make a Japanese-based game, because of all the expectations and dream-come-true fantasies. People will scrutinize the outfit, the weapons, architecture etc. way more than they usually do for AC games, at least I think so.

AC Japan and/or AC China is inevitable, just like AC Russia and AC England.
Iím really glad we got to see some glimpse of what a future AC might look like. I hope they just donít let us down and turn AC Japan into some comic and thatís it because itís totally worth it along with AC India in Brahman.

I wish AC Portugal was inevitable too.

I wish AC Iraq (Sumer or Islamic Age) and AC Ancient Egypt were as well. Those would be epic and are rarely told in video games and movies, if at all, especially Sumer.

Portugal and Spain could happen. I see a possibility at some point. Perhaps after they’ve strayed enough from Europe for some time.

Out of curiosity, why would Rockstar be your go-to for a samurai game? Their world-building skills are top-notch, but mechanically they've never made a game that made me feel as though they were a shoe-in for tackling a game of that genre.

I think what they look for in a historical period is primarily an abundance of 'romantizicized' figures, and an already established foothold in the popular imagination. I mean,

AC1 had Richard the Lionheart, the 'original' Templars & Assassins, Saladin mentioned; and *everyone* has *some* notion of 'the crusades' in general
AC2-ACB-ACR was chock-full of famous Renaissance figures; Leonardo and the Medici need no introduction; the Borgias have a miniseries on tv; Suleiman (the 'magnificent') made an appearance; even Piri Reis, whose name is familiar to conspiracy/alternative history nuts
AC3: The founding fathers, and almost every foundational event paraded before us.
AC4: Again, a hugely romanticized era & characters, with which most people are familiar; at least with iconic figures like Blackbeard.
ACU: Another period & potential characters who have a huge foothold in 'popular imagination'.

The problem with Sumer is that apart from Gilgamesh, there simply is no such figure. The later Bronze Age might fare better, though there the problem might be incorporating a number of well-established legends (and an abundance of 'romantic' figures) into a coherent narrative: There's the Hittite-Egyptian War, the treaty of Qadesh, the Hebrew Exodus, the fall of Canaanite civilization, the Trojan War, later the sudden collapse of the Hittites, and on and on. I'd LOVE to see a game that spans Argos, Hattusa, Troy, Thebes, and so on.

I can see Spain at some point, Portugal only if in that Spain game they find the time to make a extra city for the main character to visit since its in the vicinity.

And speaking of Japan, I found this just now.
