JtD, it is really hard to answer this question - I fly all and don't like any those planes...

Really tough decision, but I'll go with the Mig-3. I really like the Mig-3U but good lord are they fragile.

I like to fly all of these except the I-16 Rata.

I really do hate that airplane.

ehhhmmmrrrmmm... am i the only one here that loves the I-16 "rata" type 24??? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
it is such a pleasure to fly it... the extremely good turn rate (that saves me most of the time... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif )
and the good climb makes it a lovely "early fighter"!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The LaGG-3 has the best insurance policy around. Solid performance all around, though not super in any way. Can't beat the concentrated firepower.

Odd preferences. Yak-1 one really has best all around performance.

Pardon me for maybe going off onto a tangeant ( during my 1st post no less ) but could use some advice on what VVS plane WOULD be a good all-around plane to use in 1941. I'm referring to the original IL-2, and I play against AI ( off-line ) only for now.

Thanks

the i16 is the easiest andmost effective early war fighter that oleg made it arcadelike, before he had the nose vere up like it should becuase of the i16s extremely poor winglift, the pilot had to apply constant back pressure to keep it in the air, but now in fb it flys perfectly level you can hit planes at 1.5 - 1.7m with the starwars green shvaks that have devastating power at range and no arc but fire directly centered on the cross hairs with no leading

Leadspitter, Imagine the Hurricane with eight ShKAS machine guns! It would look like its firing Christmas trees at you, lit up and all.

Although I'm very fond of the I16 type 24, the Yak 1 has more forgiving flight characteristics and a better rear view so I'd have to go for the Yak.

Historically, the Yak-1 was the best and every bit the equal of contemporary LW fighters or even Spitfires at low altitudes. Its only drawback is lack of firepower and a short clip for the couple of guns it has.

But for fun flying and firepower (and quirkiness), the Rata Rules. I really disagree (respectfully, of course) with Leadspitter that it's been made too good. It's weakness always has been unprotected control cables. It was made much more vulnerable in the latest patch and, like many VVS a/c including the IL-2, one LW sneeze and the cannon lock up. I don't think he's flown it lately (or maybe at all). Take it up to 5,000 meters and it won't stay up there at anything below full throttle. It has more firepower than any VVS plane with its two 20mm but it's anything but a stable gun platform.

Here's a good article on flying a restored Rata. The first sentence is very ironic because Hanna, who was a Brit, was later killed flying a Spanish Civil War plane:

http://www.nzfpm.co.nz/articles/ratacwd3.htm

Notice, particularly that Hanna says it goes "straight as an arow" down the runway. The FB Rata is all over the runway and very hard to control until the tail comes up. I would say in that respect it's not am accurate model. But he gives it high marks and says he's choose it over a Hurri.

The early model Lagg historically was a piece of junk (although it's very rugged in FB) and the Soviet pilots hated the Hurricane; too slow and clumsy with those thick wings.

My $0.02.

The I-16 type 24 is by far the most enjoyable 1941 VVS aircraft to fly.

I like all of the early planes from every side--except the I-16/I-115. These don't suit my style at all, because of the carb. problem.

The Mig3 is a challenging ride; to me it is like the old P-39 in the original IL2. It's the only plane left that requires a lot of skill to fly, probably because it doesn't have a fanclub whining to make it more arcadish. (I'm not talking about the Mig3u, which we all should know was a very rare experimental plane and outperforms even some latewar planes.) With gunpods the Mig3 has decent firepower. You have to earn your kills in a regular Mig, and you can't afford to get even a scratch. I'm surprised someone mentioned the MigAM38, as this usually overlooked. This was also historically rare, but very fast down low.

I think the best 1941 VVS plane is the Lagg3. It's an all-around good performer, easy to fly, and has superb and accurate firepower with lots of ammo. Great against bombers and ground targets. It used to have an overmodelled damage model, but I think it's more reasonable now.

Before anyone complains about VVS guns, read up on the historical stats on WWII weapons. Soviets guns were superior across the board, I don't have the links right now but you can find them with a quick search.

All things being equal, I would still put my money on the Bf 109F4s in a 1941 fight. It's a crime against humanity that the Bf110C hasn't been flyable all along, and probably won't ever be now. I'd really like to see how that would do against the early nimble VVS fighters.

AGREED! If not for BoB and those bomber escort disasters, the Fb110 would still have been the Primary Luftawffe frontline fighter in June 1941.

Assuming no BoB, I am thinking that the LW would try the Fb110s for escorting the He111 in daylight to bomb Moscow instead of unsecorted at night (Moscow instead of London). How would the MiG compare to Hurri and Spit against the Fb110C?

The I-16 gets my vote, it's just a delight to fly and needs a good pilot to get the best out of it.Although the LaGG 3 and Hurricane MkIIc wouldn't be too far behind in my vote either, both are great to fly and have great armament. My Squadron flew Yak 1's (closest aircraft to a Hurricane) in IL2 before FB and I always felt letdown by the Yak's lack of ammuntion, nice to fly though.

I invite everyone who believes this (deleted) to do a simple test: Start up the game, select the I-16 in QMB and take her for a spin. Perfect level flight? Hits from 1,500-1,700 meters (as I guess he really means)? There's none of it.

The guys has some kind of issue with Oleg (and a cheap Korean spellchecker). This is just one of many posts that's oh so easy to prove wrong. Just start the game and try.

Agreed. It's a fun plane with a quirky personality and nice "real" feel to it. But then again: My favourite Bf-109 is the Emil, so maybe I'm just a sucker for the older planes.

I was just in a server that had 1940-41 planeset. MiG 3 AM-38 rocks. Fast, and can stall fight if need be. Don't take damage too well, but then again, not getting hit is the name of the game. Work the angles! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I would have liked to have seen an 'other' choice.

The 'other' choice would have been the IS-4.
