ww2 fighters. graphics are verry cool, flight models have
been redone by third party developers(not really great but non the less fun) the game is verry challenging and fun.

i just posted this because someone was asking how this game looks with todays video cards

XyZspineZyX

any demos?

XyZspineZyX

Papote, looks great. I see they have the high altitude Pancake Problem too, with the haze on the horizon.

Thanks for sharing. Those wispy high level clouds (not the low cumulus puffs), can you get above them, or are they just eye candy "clouds" like in the old US Navy Fighters?

Are their new planes in 3rd party WW2 fighters mods? The Fw-190D wasn't in the original.

Also the ground detail is much improved.

Unfortunately, even with improvements, the once excellent graphics do not live up to present FB standards. They seem a little too colorful and cartoonish.

XyZspineZyX
06-27-2003, 05:11 AM
yeah one can go over the high cloud layer and the effect is awseom as you go trough the layer and then emerge above them
to find a clear crisp sky.

the game is not exactlly realistic in the flight model department tho flight models have been redone and are way better than the original ones.

the game is just very fun to play. missions are challenging

theres tons of mods from enhanced aircraft textures from
the best artists (whom are working on FB today)
to vehicles to troops and even textures for animals that you see runing around like deer in the ardene forest to zebras in africa

there is a demo just look it up by world war2 fighters

theres one web site i go to for mods http://www.ww2fighters.net/

arggghhhhh, those graphics are late 1980's-ish at best. And although the graphics are not what a game should be based on, in 2003 those are simply unacceptable.

Compare any of those shots to some i post here:

http://kinglx.freewebspace.com/photo.html and you will see no comparison at all. Great eye candy and great gameplay = no WW2 Fighters/Combat Sim 3 on my computer!

WW2Fighters has simply the most high poly, detailed and stunning aircraft models of any sim to date, and its several years old.

Don't bash it just because it's not FB.

Frankly if you look at some of the better addons the cockpit graphics rivals that of FB and surpasses CFS1, 2 or 3.

Not bad for a sim that came out in 1998 and was a contemporary of CFS and EAW. Say what you will about the graphics looking cartoonish or 'from the late 80's', but think of all the sims that have come out since then that don't look half this good (stock or otherwise).

Dear God, get a life you nay sayers!
Some people are just so jaded and impossible to please.
WW2F is a sim with more promise than even IL2, lamentably it's not new so suffers from not being chic and "in".
Some of those screens may be at lower resolution than the masterpieces posted by His Majestic Highness Hammerd {Hammster to Ilyushinites} and don't write the flight models off lightly, Target's FMs have evolved steadily and with community input, the same also applies to graphic and a/c internals{for example cockpits}.To date the community has on offer three compilation add on disks available for the price of postage plus a couple of dollars US.
One last thing, ...flyable Mustang!
I truly do pity you folk who never had the chance to sample this masterpiece and the helpful friendly community that grew up around it!

I picked up a used copy for $8 in the States, and this week signed up for the ww2fighters.net forums. Have a look around and you'll find a copy to buy. Start at ebay if nothing else. It should be a nice sim to have fun with and explore. I feel no real need to compare it to IL-2 or FB.

Cheers,
Mike

Some people haven't heard anything about best WW2 sim there was before IL2:FB? You have missed a lot, this game was so absolutely playable game, I say was becouse I decided to buy IL2:FB http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif IL2:FB is much more realistic, but also much more harder to rookie sunday fliers like me. Jane's WW2 Fighter's graphics are little bit outdated but still working, there was couple of reasons why I bought IL2:FB, Finland is included , graphics is better, ground detail is more accurate and flight model is away better than in Janes WW2 Fighters and I was so tired to play Jane's WW2F all those years, five years since release 1998, it was about right time to buy new WW2 flight simulator, but I still recommend Jane's WW2 Fighters to those ones who have newer tried it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's been a while since I last played it but damn those screenies look awesome. I do yearn to fly a p-51 again or Spit and WWII Fighters had both.

I wonder what texture size the K-4 is using... I bet its at least 2048x2048, or theres some texture compression involved.

We could use such quliaty skins in Il-2.

"Jane's WWII Fighters" plays very well on XP Home. No complaints here.

The texture resolution of the planes is limited to 512x512 bitmaps. Modders like Hammerd and Rammjager use several more bitmaps to skin thier planes (and now tanks and vehicles) than the original models used.

The latest Add-on CD is now called the Base Mods CD and puts all the essential 3D models onto one CD. The first two Add-on CDs have essentially been discontinued. The new CD also has the latest terrain textures and a full version of MIKH's "Russian Front" mod that turns the Mustang and Spitfire into Yaks and converts all of the Allied vehicles to Russian.

Sadly, the game is hard to find and I sincerely believe that it hasn't been published since around 2001.

What I want to know is playability.

As we know - FB plays pretty badly with 24 AC on a map - Does this game allow for massive AC at one time?

Game plays great for 1998 software, so smooth framerates with 32 aircraft in quick mission builder, full mission builder I haven't really used, but I think you can put in many more aircraft. Put resolution up to 1280 x 1024 and looks great! especially with new plane models and terrain sets.

Spit IX, BF109 G6, P-38(J?), FW 190 A-8, P-51D, P-47(D?), ME262 (A1?) Flyable

There are many modifications for flight models at

www.ww2fighters.net (http://www.ww2fighters.net)

Can change Spit to clipped wing spit, FW 190 to D9, and others.

I just re installed WWII fighters last night on my machine, the base original without any patches and such, of course I pushed all the settings to the max

Recon, WWIIF's is very 'playable'. On a PII450 it ran great with 30+ aircraft/ medium ground action. I'd assume that on any modern rig you could populate a map extremely heavy. It was also quite fun with a good feeling of flight (better than EAW or CFS imho), but after Il-2/FB I just can't go back. Relative aircraft performance was quite good, but all aircraft have complete lack of spin charactersitics and minimal stall (pull and keep pulling), making for less realistic representation of aerial combat. Campaign also lacked bigtime, but their were a few dynamic generators created, some that worked very well. Online coding was not good either, very laggy, and no 'cheat' protection (after it got cracked).

XyZspineZyX
06-27-2003, 09:12 PM
Yep. Reinstalled it and went after the cd addons collection. Last night. Yep. Downloaded some utilities that really let me shove the graphics with my new card. Looks beautiful still. The FM is a bit lame, but I found 3rd party FM's for all the planes. Made them a bit better. I seem to have a new hobby till the patch is released. Now, could you guys share a little of the bandwidth at the ww2fighters site? I'd like to dl a couple of the campaigns there. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

People who say WWII Fighters looks like garbage have never played it or are simply being close minded. It's a great sim with a great community behind it.

Once you've flown with sixty or seventy heavy bombers being swarmed by -109s, planes dropping from the sky in flames, tracers screaming across the screen and your own cockpit blasted and covered in blood, and at good FPS, well, it's just damn fun and it looks fantastic.

XyZspineZyX
06-28-2003, 02:07 AM
I will fully admit those last few screenshots really did look pretty good. And as for the outside community helping out this sorry Janes product, it seems they have done a good job at least in making it look good.

The biggest problem with Janes was and forever will be their FM. Jane's jet games do not do any better in FM than this one did back when it came out, i should know, i wasted my money on all of them. At least the 2 Longbow's were a slight saving grace.

I had not heard about an 'outside' community stepping in to help out WWII Fighters, because i gave up on it a long time ago, and you have to admit when IL2 Sturmovik came out, it made everything else look and feel light years behind.

But if the community can do for WWII what it did for Falcon 4 i'm sure some people will get some enjoyment out of it.
