I had this same thing happen to me. Heres a pic, sorry its so big I'm at work and just happen to have this on my server. Flew like this for about 15 minutes. Could manuever well enough to fly around, dive (flame off) and climb (flame on) but not well enough to shoot anybody down so I eventually just bailed. Engine ran fine even after beign on fire for several minutes. Tried to figure out how to record it but I never did manage it.

My incident was a result of being blasted right before leaving the runway. As you can see I had no trouble gaining altitude aftwords.

exactly how my 109z looked - was flying through the wreckage of an exploding 110, then went on to shoot down the remaining 4 110s with only 2/3 an aircraft.

Don't forget that there is a disparity between visual damage models and FM/DM damage levels.

In other words, what you see isn't necessarily what you get.
