It's not Metallica or the Crowes just because it's a black background. :) But it is a real clue and I'm curious to see how you all approach this. Have fun. :)

Well, then the black background suggests Spinal Tap.

If you image search the image you posted, you go on Audacity's Google +. Audacity is used by a character in the movie Paranormal Activity, which was out in 2007.
Do you know when Led Zeppelin reformed?

December

That was a hard clu, but I'm already preparing to play Immigrant Song.
Well played, well played

Additional Spinal Tap proof:

You can read the clue as "This" is a clue, meaning the word "this" is in fact the clue.
So "This" is an anagram for "SH**", which is the first word in the review for the Spinal Tap classic "Shark Sandwich".

Has to be at least one Spinal Tap song then right? Since I know Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight was already in Guitar Hero right?

I really don't see it being a spinal tap 3 pack, probably a 3 pack of 80s songs. I won't say hits since I don't want to upset anyone. :p

Hmm, black album covers. There are quite a few.

Prince has The Black Album
The Beatles With The Beatles has a lot of black. So if the pic is a portion of the album vs the entire album it could be this.
AC/DC Back in Black would be Awesome
The Eagles, The Long Run is mostly black and would be awesome as well.
Ooo, Bad Company would be awesome too :)
Black Sabbath Master of Reality!
Van Halen's OU812 has a large portion of black.
Steely Dan's Aja is mostly black

There are others that I recognize the name of but don't know if they're in the running and other known bands with greatest hits that I dismissed.

Here's a list of black/dark album covers:

I'm going to guess it's is the black box that is the clue with the text inside of it; as the name of an album, some song(s), or artist. Rather then the look of a cover. What one though, no idea.

The double post was not a clue. Just garden-variety incompetence. :) I didn't realize I had double posted, sorry.

I would love it to be Spinal Tap, Nirvana, or Dethklok but it is not. I feel it's only fair to eliminate stuff along the way so you don't waste effort on too many blind alleys. I wanted to just sit back and watch but I'm not that cruel, and I want you to have some fun with this.

Black Sabbath had a black cover

All That Remains has one, well kind of, picture of the gruop on the front

Killswitch Engage had one with Holy Diver on it (special edition album)

If it was Beatles, Pink Floyd, or any of the classic artists we know everybody wants, you would be more likely to see it in a press release than one of my little puzzles. Sorry, but I do like the way you dream. :)

When I say things that are intentional bread crumbs or significant bits of info, I will post them in green to make your lives easier.

I will tell you that the material does not come from an artist or album with an all-black cover. The color black has some significance in the answer, though.

Key seems to be prevalent in the thread today...

Classic Franz
Burton *******s Theatre - Winnipeg - Wed, Sep 2, 2009Posted 09/03/2009by Hurshey
This show was amazing! Never a dull moment, and they kept on playing even with Paul's kick pedal breaking at the beginning of a song, and some sort of speaker glitch at one point. They had the whole theatre up on their feet, and it was a fun, hot and sweaty (literally) night! Awesome show guys :) Come back soon!
Favourite moment: When all four of them were playing on Paul's drumset at the same time. Too cool
Opening act(s): Who were these guys? They introduced themselves as Hootie and the Blowfish, which they clearly weren't...and they never said their real name. The lead singer was a spazz, and it was entertaining non the less

I think what we're thinking right now is that means it's related to the first game (so Franz Ferdinand fits).
Also, the code Dan posted was a symmetric-key block cipher, so "key" means something, I think; that's how I found the lyrics on the last page.

Half the fun of these speculation threads is to see some guess that comes out of left field become the consensus choice and then watch how many go bat s*** crazy when that band isn't the actual DLC

'Key' is a clue
'Black' is a clue
It's related to RS1
It's not related to the Black Keys
It's not a 'legendary' band such as Metallica, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, etc...

It's not Metallica or the Crowes

It's not Black Keys next week.

I would love it to be Spinal Tap, Nirvana, or Dethklok but it is not.

If it was Beatles, Pink Floyd, or any of the classic artists we know everybody wants, you would be more likely to see it in a press release than one of my little puzzles.

It's not Silversun Pickups.

The initial hint was on a black label, and since "Rocksmith" is key, and it itself is a black label on this site it fits the bill.

It's also a band that has been released in a real guitar game before :)

Edit: Editing to include that it also has nothing to do with RS1 which applies to them as well.

While black has some relevance, the color green itself is not relevant to the answer or even the next step in this puzzle. It was an arbitrary color choice to show importance, and I thought green was a more positive color than, say, scary red. So don't worry about that.

As far as I can tell, Duggle has compiled all the currently relevant info. It's just what you do with it and where that info leads you.

Perhaps Biffy Clyro.

Black: They have an album named Blackened Sky, as well as a song titled Black Chandelier. (not to mention their album Puzzle - fitting for this cryptic thread). With the interpretation of darkness - they also have a song titled Victory over the Sun. The album for those two songs (and the one below) is Opposites - the white text and black background are opposites.

Blowfish: Another recent song, Stingin' Belle. (blowfish can sting, right?)

Rocksmith: They have toured with/supported many RS bands, including Foo Fighters, Muse, The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Rolling Stones, and Queens of the Stone Age.

Musical Cipher

A "cipher" is a method of transforming a text into a secret code. These days this is usually done for cloak-and-dagger purposes, but in olden times witches and magicians used ciphers to create magical inscriptions for talismans or to write their grimoires (books of spells and rituals). In fact, historians trace the origins of the science of cryptography to the 15th-century treatise Steganographia, by Abbot Trithemius -- the magician who was the mentor and teacher of the most famous magician of all, Agrippa.

For our spells, we sometimes use a cipher that translates letters of the alphabet into musical notes and rhythms. We might encipher a God or Goddess's name, one of our own names, or a word that represents the purpose or focus of the spell (e.g. "safety" or "health"). This gives us a melody that we can make the basis of a chant or of a drum rhythm -- a kind of musical sigil or talisman.

The system we use is adapted from one described by G. Porta, De furtivis literarum notis (On the secret notes of letters), 1602. Porta's method was widely used for secret communications by spies, diplomats, and generals throughout the 18th century.

Porta's system was more limited than ours -- it used only the major mode, omitted K and W, and only went up to the note f'' and back. Our version uses the natural correlation between letters of the scale and letters of the alphabet (the letter A = the note A, the letter B = the note B, etc.), which composers such as Bach and Schumann have used for centuries to create musical themes. Partly for numerological reasons, we use the traditional 24-letter "Latin" alphabet, in which I is the same as J and U is the same as V.

To create a musical talisman:

Write down the letters of the word or phrase you want to encipher above a blank music staff.
On the staff, write the musical note that corresponds to each letter.
On a musical instrument, play the resulting melody.
To improve the melody, you can transpose any of the notes up or down an octave -- in other words, to the note with the same name. (In the example below, you can see that I transposed down the note D that corresponds to "L" in "WEALTH".)
Experiment to find out in what key the melody sounds best. Does an F, for instance, sound better as F-sharp, or a B as B-flat? Bear in mind the appropriate correspondences: Minor modes are more dark, inward, "yin"; major modes are more bright, outward, "yang". (In the examples below, "HECATE" works best in a haunting minor mode, using F-natural, whereas "WEALTH" works best in an expansive major mode, using F-sharp.)
As long as you keep the basic distinction between short notes vs. long notes, you can alter the rhythms slightly to make them more musical -- a quarter note could be an eighth note, for example, or a half note a whole.
You can now set appropriate words to these notes to create a chant, as we have done with HECATE.

2014, apparently

U2's Zooropa album cover might be something somewhat similar to that(reference to tame impala) maybe there's a mesage in there like the U2 album(future album tracks and the batman sountrack song were hinted in the cover). Or I am just overanalyzing stuff.

Cicada 3301

One evening in January last year, Joel Eriksson, a 34-year-old computer analyst from Uppsala in Sweden, was trawling the web, looking for distraction, when he came across a message on an internet forum. The message was in stark white type, against a black background.
“Hello,” it said. “We are looking for highly intelligent individuals. To find them, we have devised a test. There is a message hidden in this image. Find it, and it will lead you on the road to finding us. We look forward to meeting the few that will make it all the way through. Good luck.”
The message was signed: "3301”.
A self-confessed IT security "freak” and a skilled cryptographer, Eriksson’s interest was immediately piqued. This was – he knew – an example of digital steganography: the concealment of secret information within a digital file. Most often seen in conjunction with image files, a recipient who can work out the code – for example, to alter the colour of every 100th pixel – can retrieve an entirely different image from the randomised background "noise”.
It’s a technique more commonly associated with nefarious ends, such as concealing child pornography. In 2002 it was suggested that al-Qaeda operatives had planned the September 11 attacks via the auction site eBay, by encrypting messages inside digital photographs.

Sleepily – it was late, and he had work in the morning – Eriksson thought he’d try his luck decoding the message from "3301”. After only a few minutes work he’d got somewhere: a reference to "Tiberius Claudius Caesar” and a line of meaningless letters. Joel deduced it might be an embedded "Caesar cipher” – an encryption technique named after Julius Caesar, who used it in private correspondence. It replaces characters by a letter a certain number of positions down the alphabet. As Claudius was the fourth emperor, it suggested "four” might be important – and lo, within minutes, Eriksson found another web address buried in the image’s code.
Feeling satisfied, he clicked the link.
It was a picture of a duck with the message: "Woops! Just decoys this way. Looks like you can’t guess how to get the message out.”
"If something is too easy or too routine, I quickly lose interest,” says Eriksson. "But it seemed like the challenge was a bit harder than a Caesar cipher after all. I was hooked.”

Keep reading .... story goes on and on, and I didn't want to past the entire article. Amazingly interesting.

1. Great work on the steganography thing by Ox1a4toke (http://forums.ubi.com/member.php/1520931-Ox1a4toke)- looks the most promising so far.

2. I think I see a 3rd shooter on the grassy knoll top right. That may not be relevant

3. The DLC hint game has definitely been raised!! So that's nice.

4. 20 pages... wow.

Very well done, Ox1a4toke. I realized this afternoon that Blowfish wasn't enough to go on by itself but didn't think the image of Trithemius would get you as far as it did. The second image was hidden in the first and encrypted with the Blowfish algorithm that I posted earlier in the thread. Using a steg tool like HIP (Hide in Picture), you could extract the hidden image using the password "rocksmith" (lower case, as I typed it earlier).

The Cicada story is fascinating, but the use of steganography is as far as it goes; there's no other connection here. But I do encourage everyone to read that story, as it's pretty wild if you're into secret stuff.

Twitter DLC code giveaways are usually pretty easy because you can't control, say, the speed of anyone's internet connection or how quickly they can get into Steam. At least if you don't win the prize, you can have fun saying "Hey, I know that answer." And I don't want to reward people who use cut-and-paste bots; this way, it actually requires human thought and interaction. And it's more fun than a Captcha, as many here will agree. :)

You're almost there on this, by the way. If you can determine what it is you're looking at, you'll know next week's DLC.

hi all. terrible poster excellent lurker here. an image search for this band revealed lots of psychedelic art that could be the hidden image. so with no real proof my guess is.... BLACK SABBATH. (apologies if this was guessed earlier. i dont recall seeing them) now back to lurking

I wonder if it has anything to do with Zakk Wylde?

I cannot find a BLS album that matches, but I think I see black leather jackets, blonde hair, and beards.

not sure if it means anhthing or not, but in the "B a r a n i" clue, only the letter 'B' is capitalized. Or is it just coincidence?

is there a "Briana" in some band?

I would love it to be Spinal Tap

Regardless of how it turns out, I am pleased to here that there are those among the developers that also appreciate the world's loudest band. Perhaps I am not the only one impressed by their raw power...and their punctuality.
