View Full Version : PC noob needs big help in Mouse & KB editor controls

So, I've got a little more interest building on Trials Evo Gold and begun building a small, neat skill game, but I get often frustrated about the very bad Mouse & Keyboard controls, the worst editor for PC I've ever used. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_asleep.gif want to use the X360 gamepad so less as possible, even when I like it more)

I tell my issues first: It takes freaking long to move an object. I need to pull the Red/Green/Blue pointer about twelve times and once CTRL+R to place an object from about 30 in-game meters to my desired place, which is 10x longer than using the gamepad. I need to continuously switch between "Move" and "Rotate" mode, which I don't need to on gamepad.
One main reason why it takes so long is because the mousewheel button doesn't move the camera, which should be in every PC editor. It's hard to move objects while the editor cam looks straight down, because Q/E key doesn't go up/down on local camera direction, instead it always goes global up/down direction, which leaves W/S and Q/E key going same to forward and no way to move screen up/down.

On YouTube and the custom tracks forum I've seen great detailed trials tracks, which I've heard was done by Mouse & Keyboard and for me currently impossible do anything fast in the editor on PC. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_asleep.gif am very fast on Xbox btw)

Can anybody give me some tips how you use mouse & keyboard fast in the editor?

Hey! Glad to have you building on Gold!

I'm not amazing with the editor by any stretch of the imagination, but I think I can help a bit.

Moving an object a long distance is infinitely easier the further you are away from it, so back the camera up, grab an arrow, and chuck it across the screen http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/biggrin.gif

Move and rotate hotkeys are T and Y respectively, dunno if you already use that and just don't like having to swap, or are using the click boxes at the bottom.

My mousewheel does move the camera, really fast too, so it's a great way to move long distances, dunno why yours isn't working...

I have tried building with Mouse and KB as well and damn... it is really really bad.
Why don't you just take your Xbox controller and connect it to the pc?
I build mostly with the controller myself, it is a LOT more comfortable.

Do not give up on your Skillgame! The pc version of Trials really needs good skillgames, since there are really only a few enjoyable and creative enough. *jealously looking at xbox TC*

I use both the mouse, keys and also the controller for different tasks, xbox 360 wired controllers work perfect on pc's.

There's a whole lot of extra buttons on the mouse interface on screen (with hotkey tooltips), which help me align objects around their own axis or world axis.

Sometimes, I also copy/paste with ctrl C/V, and scale things like area clear tools with the controller, or reset object alignment to driveline and/or plane align.

Moving objects from one side of the map to another via a red/green/blue arrow takes me only like 0.5 seconds as well bound only by camera distance limits.

My mouse wheel zooms in or out and a combination of holding right mouse and W or S you can fly through the world and steer in every direction, mouse wheel also can make you fly really fast when flying through world. So no idea if it doesn't work for you. I personally did not change any specific settings for this behaviour.

Maybe it has to do with your mouse senstivity/settings.

Sometimes rotating things goes better with one or the other, same goes for copying, selecting, and moving around, combination of 3 things makes the most out of the game.

I've been building like this since the start of evo gold and never had any editor issues as far as the interface goes, aside from sometimes having a hard time selecting objects inside large groups or clicking a single effect/water plane when it's already inside other objects/glued/grouped as well but you can shift+click select if you don't hover too long to select singles still.

And another thing, sometimes saved favorites really have odd basic alignments but I think it has to do with some central pivot or group rotation before saving (the alignment of the first object before group/glue has to do with it IIRC).

About my project, I am building a grid maze game, which has keys included to open other doors, and the ranking is based on how fast you are. I am searching for making the game more colorful, and maybe I'll do it in 8-bit cartoon style.

@Chaeron: Yes, I use T and Y keys all the time. I don't mean the mousewheel roll to move forward/backward, I mean clicking down the mousewheel, which is moving the camera U/D/L/R on most editor programs, while it doesn't (or at least not by me) do anything.

I was using the editor already before 3 Months, but I've only done a few set-ups which is shared on TrialsPrefabs (sticky thread in TE: GE level editor section) and then I stopped using it.


@Royal: I have & can build with Xbox controller (may plan again if necessary) but I want to try and use the M&KB features, and the issue about using an gamepad is that the pointer stutters, like the editor itself, so that's why I'm doing a skill game, with no physics because it lags.
Yes, I hope I get more and more interest making this skill game! Shouldn't be all too complex (at least for me).


@Teri: My idea was not ascending/descending the camera while camera faces straight down, I meant moving the camera up/down by screen direction, like the direction you are how looking on the screen. Most CTRL and/or SHIFT commands I know what it does, the (probably) only thing I don't know about the editor is the action center settings, since this feature doesn't exist on gamepad mode.

UPDATE:

When I was messing with the PC editor, I've just found out a new camera movement control. Click both LMB & RMB then it does rise/lower and left/right moving the camera, just like Q/E and A/D keys, just with the mouse it's presser and faster.
