Looking at one of the wallpapers, I see a moon and mist. Wonder if there's a way to make moving skies in 360-degree prerendered settings?

Riven had moving water...so maybe....

Ah yes: interesting question. Well, I believe that they couldn't really make the sky move much, but I have an idea of what they could and might do. In Riven, the water is done as a kind of applet application, and they could do the same with a mist instead of water. They could make the actual image of the sky that doesn't change, and put an ever changing mist that is layered in front of it. Cool idea! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Then they'd be sacrificing quality for "animation". I think it'd be better to have a beautiful static sky!

Or, they could integrate realtime 3d effects )i.e. moving sky, mist floating through the air) and prerendered ages.... and since only a few objects would be running in the realtime 3d enginge at once, they could really load those few objects up on polygons.

Don't need 3D for skies, unless we're in an airplane. You can get very nice effects with a couple of semi-transparent 2D planes moving at different rates.

That's what I meant, Srikandi. Thank you for demonstrating your superior ability with the English language. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Also, think of this: On Amateria, they had lightning and I think the clouds may have moved. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) They should definitely be able to do some sky animations in Myst 4. Especailly since it's on DVD. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

No moving clouds in Exile. Lightning yes, moving clouds no. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I suspect that Myst IV will employ the same pre-rendered movie technique that Schizm did. The entire scene is actually a movie. That's why the CD version was so low in terms of video quality.

The DVD was much cleaner (very little compression) because of the bigger size afforded to movies.

If this is the case, moving skies would be very simple and would look the same on everyone's computer (not always true with real-time).

Ah, but did Schizm have 360 rotations at each scene? (Just a question, I have never played it and do not know.) It seems very difficult to have an entire movie for each scene WITH 360 rotation, does it not? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Yes, it did. That's one of the reasons it was so poor in the CD version. The video files were simply massive.

@Jeff433, yeah that's something i realy look forward to.
@phen, in revelation.., look at trailer (i hope it's not something they put in the trailer too make it look greater than it is)

for those who didnt notice that.., I'm almost 100% sure that the skies in exile are prerendered per age. that would save a huge amount of memory and be a very logical approach to make lightning like u see in amateria(spelling?)

I should clarify on Schizm's "360 rotation" bit. It is *not* like Exile's, where you can look absolutely *anywhere* you want within a node. You are restricted to specific angles which you can rotate the camera between. It's not free-look, it's Riven with better slide-changing http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif.

re: Skies

After polishing off my dusty glasses I ran back to the Revelation WebSite and I payed close attention to the video we were given. I watched it start and as the camera pans past the huts in photos I see smoke coming out of the building ?

So if they animated smoke maybe we will get a more enviromently friendly game. Moving skies http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Water with ripples etc.
