Just an FYI, Discovery Wings is running "Flying Tank" Saturday January 24, the story of the IL-2.

I'm getting a fresh tape and recording it.

I tuned in late in the show this morning but see its repeating during the day so I get another chance. Battle of Stalingrad was featured showing the Il-2 early series and Field-Mods in action. COOL STUF !

There is some excellent footage in this show that should settle all of the "muzzle flash arguments" shot in daytime, with Il-2's, massive flashes! And oh yeah, great show!

Only problem with your theory Cowboy is the fact that film is a lot more sensitive to muzzle flashes than the human eye.

I seen it many times, and the muzzleflashes of the il2 cannons are similiar size but they dont look like fire and fade extremely quick.

Also they show the il2 that supposably took over 100 hits, all the hits are smaller then a eggcorn and all from the bottom of the aircraft which is definatly from ground fire only not cannon damage

The also show someguncam of il2s loosing wings from a few hits, the plane was superior to the stuka without a doubt but its armor couldnt take as much damage as the p47, getting a direct engine hit from a 88 cannon at close range loosing 8 cylinders and able to rtb, but the il2 had better cockpit armor from the bottom only, "the notorious iron bathtub"
