I thought to make this thread and update it whenever i make a new track. Don't worry, i finished my first track before clicking on new topic. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/razz.gif

So, to the point:

First Born
My first track. Made while trying to get familiar with the editor. Kept improving it while watching a few tutorials, until i felt it won't suck (a lot). Hope you like it.

Type: Trials
Difficulty: Medium (to my eyes at least)

Made a video for my first track. Used the ingame youtube feature to capture it, it didn't turn out that good (slowmo and kinda bad quality). Especially the uploading messed things even more, so i decided to upload it myself. Probably will upload a new one, when we get the updated youtube support. Until then, here it is:

Can't really get to mad because this is your first track and you seam like a nice guy. Got some tips for you, it felt like just a bunch of random obstacles with no flow. You said you were testing out stuff so no harm no foul man. Try to put some flow in your next track and try to construct a consistent theme. Here is a track I made on the 360 version. Has a consistent theme and decent driving line.

Yeah tbh, i had the same feeling about the flow and the lack of theme. The whole thing felt very random, but i didn't want just to delete it, after experimenting with all these things.

Yes master! Make easier tracks I must. I build to my skill level so I made easier tracks when I was on Xbox. Now that I can 0 extremes easily I like building them more. I have a hard track and a medium in the works.

Oookay, 1st track and getting the hang of the editor and stuff... I've seen worse 3rd+ tracks...

Don't. Just don't. Ever.
You want a hard-ish obstacle? Make a hard-ish obstacle. Don't just take an easy one and add some barely noticeable, miniscule **** to the DL in order to make the unsuspecting player trip.
Number1 reason for a lot of my 1* ratings. Because, while ofc it is raising the difficulty, it's also introducing unfairness, annoyance - essentially, what feels to me like borderline trolling.

I'm sorry that you felt it like borderline trolling. If i considered it trolling or anything, i wouldn't put it there in the first place. I never thought it was that miniscule for an obstacle, or that it could annoy people. I mean, you might trip on it once if you go fast, but it will happen only that one time. After that you know the pole is there for a reason, and i thought the obstacle isn't that tricky to pass.

Cheers. We talked on Uplay before i saw this post, so i'll just repeat here that i keep creating/testing random things in the editor. Nothing is close to a finished track and i don't want to glue together random stuff like i kinda did with my first track. Requires a lot of time which i don't have to spare at the moment, so i just experiment with stuff.

Here's the thing, though: I approach the obstacle, I may or may not even notice the metal bits, I might think they're part of the scenery (turns out, half of them are), I cannot assess whether those bits are actually on the driving line, etc. It's unfair. And one unfairness is too much. From an authority on the topic, Mr. Trials himself, emphasis mine:


Be very clear about the rules you set. Whatever you do, donít irritate the player. That may sound weird coming from the Trials guy, but, for example, when you fail in Trials itís your fault. Not the gameís. [...] It would have been easy to create Trials in such a way that there were random mines all around and, oh boy, would that be a challenge Ė but itís not. Not really. Itís just irritating.
