So let me get this straight. This is a video of an average player racing 2 other average riders on a few customs (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpHNRQ6NKMQ). What i dont get is-

-How does a video like this get so much views and the viewers actually enjoying the gameplay footage?
-Watching riders crashing repetitively on what would be a roughly medium difficulty track?
-Racing on customs such as TWEED HEAD's JuS 4 FuN? I mean...really? Seriously? I dont even see the novelty in this.

Im willing to overlook the fact that HaatFilms has probably made a name for itself before Evo came into the picture (hence all the subscribers) and the fact that it broadcasts Trials to a huge market. I can understand that and have no problem with it.

But how can people watch riders crashing so much on a track that cant even be beared to look at and say, whoa that looks like so much fun. Nevermind whatever commentary or stand up comedy is being attempted during the video still doesnt justify the whole footage. I cannot comprehend what people would see in this if they have not played either of the trials games.

I meant no offense to HaatFilm or any of the track creators. Just tryin to understand what people see in this. I was so disgusted after 1 minute of watching the video above which begged the question. Just....HOW??????

I had the exact same thoughts after watching the video, but after thinking some more about it I came to a simple conclusion about one aspect:
Most people enjoy watching such videos because it shows people about the same skill level they are. I guess for the "casual Trials player" it can be quite frustrating watching the videos you / Murdoc / Soty / etc. put up. I donīt know if Iīm right, but it seems kind of logical http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

Iīm absolutely with you on the terrible tracks many of those videos (not only by HaatFilms) showcase.
I donīt and will never understand why
a) people enjoy watching those and more important
b) the people making the vids are even playing them.

HaatFilms got many of their subscribers from making trailers for Mojang, the creators of Minecraft. I personally love their videos. It doesn't need to be a perfect run or map for me to enjoy it, and their commentary just adds to the enjoyment. As you can see from their videos' views, Trials is currently their most popular series and will continue to be as long as they keep making them.

I agree that their map selection isn't always the best, that there probably are better tracks to choose from, but that can be said also for example for Roosterteeth's Trials Horse series. There needs to be variety and I don't think a "bad" track here or there hurts.

But, imagine if Trottimus wasn't playing, the one who finishes the track when the other two are barely half-way through? http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/razz.gif

I thought about this too when i was looking at machinima's top 10 plays of the CoD/Halo series, and noticed that their top 10 fails had more views, assuming that the majority of a game's fan base can relate more closely to the fails instead of the skilled plays. But i still fail to understand how failing at trials can be fun to watch which is what the video above seemed to emphasized, in my opinion. I guess for me, there is no 'spectacular' crashing when it comes to this game lol.

My question was based more on how those videos entice the viewers. I may be biased, having alot of trials experience, but if i were a newcomer and i saw a trailer for Evolution (like the one Redlynx makes for a DLC preview) and wanted to see some actual footage, the video above would put me off or make me lose interest in the game thinking this is what people find fun? Just like for the seasoned trials veteran that wants to elevate their game, ninja promos like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUathmxumPQ&list=FLktDb_t6UegyNy1bJpdq2-g) or this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmUa4pTrfXQ&list=FLktDb_t6UegyNy1bJpdq2-g) are a great example that can inspire someone and still give a good name to an aspect of this game.

And yes i know if Trottimus wasnt playing it would be a 2 hour footage instead of 20 minutes. Whoopee-doo lol. I just think for someone in their position, being a big name and all, they would be better off playing beginners/easy customs picking out better well-detailed maps that showcase the never-ending possibilities of the editor and that would give the editor a good name, if you can see where im goin with this? HaatFilms may be funny to some people but i cant see them giving anything good to the Trials name based on how they are going with the series. All this is just my personal opinion, take it with a grain of salt. Just curious what other people think of this too.

Whats wrong with em playin my tracks.

Nothing man! You're doin one hell of a job. Im envious of you. I could not build a track to save my life and you push them out 20 minutes at a time like its nothing. Your amazing knowledge and vastness of skills in the editor is really mind-boggling.

You could say he was a public servant, ending the pain early for people...
Have to say I don't enjoy these videos either ( poor riding and in my opinion poor track choices ) but there probably is a market for them... ( the don't move fans perhaps? http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif )

I can tell you with 100% certainty that "average trialers" enjoy crashes. When my relatives see Trials, they enjoy the crashes more than the skillful obstacle traversing.

QFT, and it's not just Trials players, most people who see the game at shows (PAX and such) have more fun watching someone smash their face than complete a course flawlessly. People will stop and watch someone for 15 minutes yet never touch the game themselves.

what makes me laugh is that they have TF just because they promote the game in some way. True fan really doesn't have anything to do with being a true fan at all. I couldnt stand watching the OOP promotion videos due to the player never learning from their mistakes and this video was the same. For me crashing is a part of trials but constantly crashing because you are doing the same thing expecting different results does my head in!

This. It's 3 guys having fun with the game they (and I) enjoy. Sure, they aren't world-class trials speedrunners and sometimes the maps they choose aren't very good, but I still find their videos really entertaining to watch. And mainly it's their commentary what makes them entertaining, not the crashing.

In my opinion it's also about the commentary. Now i'm going to be honest and say that haatfilms' commentary doesn't do anything for me, I think they are pretty boring. However a channel by the name of Epileptikrobot does about the same as haatfils ( Not copying since they started a long time ago) They have about 1k subs and they aren't that good compared to some skilled riders as yourself. But the commentary makes it entertaining. Even though I am a fairly skilled rider, I still do enjoy the gameplay because I think it's fun watching other riders fail for some reason http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/biggrin.gif.

I don't mind watching less skilled riders, but I can't stand when they don't edit the videos. Watching an entire run of someone faulting hundreds of times is ridiculously stupid. I do like when they keep in the entertaining parts like akamikeb (http://youtube.com/watch?v=-3acBocK4YU) or theRadBrad (http://youtube.com/watch?v=I6RSJMyKBGY).

There certainly is a place for comedy in Evo track videos through both crashes and commentary, but like all the best comedy it needs a little crafting to actually be funny.

I think substance abuse and low IQ contributes to the enjoyment or perhaps just kids....they can find enjoyment from that kind of thing.

I dont listen to commentaries on any videos, its not that i dont want to, its just something that cant be helped. But i was never one to enjoy other's demise at the game and its something i probably will never get. But i cant imagine any type of commentaries would justify watching the same thing over and over, no matter how its twisted. On the other hand, i recall akamikeb making a commentary on Murdoc's run on Execution (which jook so generously translated for me) and i thought it was somewhat funny. Ive had friends over playin trials on occasion, and whenever they couldnt get pass an obstacle for the 20th/50th/100th time, i couldnt bring myself to laugh but say gimme that damn controller now!

I feel the same way. I have no problem watching less skilled riders at all, as long as its editted. I have tremendous amount of respect for the average rider that attempts to go beyond their skill level and pull off an accomplishing feat, because i can relate. Its one of the most amazing feeling there is and i really enjoy seeing other riders pushing themselves even farther.

Point well taken. I may be quite the opposite when it comes to determining for the first time whether i would like a game or not. I look at it like, is it a fun challenge and does the rewarding feeling paying off equally? Dont get me wrong, i enjoy the occasional blooper that you see in general FPS games, like shooting a launcher at an heli and having it miss and coming right down back at ya. But Trials wise, anything i find even remotely close to bein funny would probably have to do with all the squirrel easter eggs, i remember having a chuckle or two when i went through all of them.

Of course it doesnt help that ive faulted at least a million times since the days of HD and cannot stand the sight of crashes anymore. Maybe im reading too much into this, i dont know. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/razz.gif

To be successful on YouTube you either have to be as skilled player that gives great advice or be entertaining or funny, hatfilms are entertaining. The videos are funnier when they fail as a perfect run is boring. For example I sent them a purposefully badly made track because it was funnier to watch their reactions.

I watch their videos if I'm really bored and when it comes to skill they are not the greatest lol.
Don't really listen to the commentary much to be honest.
They are a pretty big channel, I guess it's good promo for Trials.
And a lot of people seem to really enjoy them, so yeah...

It's funny that somebody mentioned Epileptikrobot in here, I love his videos. Think they are hilarious.
He has some of the worst tracks sometimes, but I know he gets them out of the highest rated feeds.

I personally prefer entertainment over skill though, I watch other guys if I want to see skill. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

I dont watch them. I just came across it on Youtube, saw the first few minutes and asked what people see in this. Was just curious, that is all. I still dont think any amount of humor in the commentaries could make a video like this bearable to watch.

This.

People who aren't very familiar with trials will be bored watching a perfect run. The top players have so much skill that it just makes the game look easy and uneventful. watching these guys play cracks me up. My wife cracks up whenever she sees me wreck, but perfect runs look boring to her unless I do a bunch of flips n stuff.

Of course when I watch some of the top riders, it makes my hands sweat because I know how difficult some of those obstacles are. but watching these guys is totally different. it's relaxing and fun, even tho it can be a little bit frustrating at times.

I completely disagree with perfect runs being boring. Yes, it is all a matter of opinion, but I cringe every single time I see a video of someone who just does the same thing repeatedly expecting the outcome to somehow improve, *cough *cough, Albert Einstein's definition of insanity, *cough http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/a/alberteins133991.html

That's because you are a seasoned Trials player.. you see the game differently than most other people that are not very familiar with the game. Those people don't know what it takes to get that perfect run, so it doesn't have the same effect on them as it does on you.

Before I really knew what Trials was, I started watching Malachyte's videos. At first I was just interested in watching the Level 4 videos because I found it more entertaining to watch him fail 300 times. So I can see what threewheels means. I then began to appreciate his 0f runs on Level 1s and starting watching those. Obviously I still think his Level 4 vids are impressive but 0fing a Level 3 is way more impressive. So I can see both sides of the coin.

I don't like HaatFilms because their commentary doesn't do anything for me, but I do watch EpileptikRobot which is similar to HaatFilms except I like the commentary is better.

I can agree with this, the HaatFilms commentary is just not good at all in my opinion, but I can watch akamikeb do TETS all day, because he is entertaining, and for the most part, learns from his mistakes. Also, on the bit about Malachyte, it is incredible to watch his level 4s and 5s, because they are so damn hard. It doesn't matter that he faults a bunch to beat them, and I don't mind watching those repeated faults. The trials videos that annoy me are the ones where there are 150 faults on what is barely a medium track.
