View Full Version : The Trials HD Riddle Revealed

Two and a half years ago, Trials HD was released for Xbox LIVE Arcade. Little noticed at first were various strange clues, hidden in deep parts of the game. Seemingly related to science, history, and unexplained mysteries, the brief clues hinted at a larger riddle buried within the game.

Over the last two years, the Trials Community has debated, speculated, and argued over each bit of evidence. What follows is a very special video created by FatShady, a dedicated member of Trials community and one of the many who contributed to the riddle's solution.

Rather than put the solution into our own words, this video will set up the riddle and reveal each clue and how it fits into the riddle.

Regarding the riddle, RedLynx's Creative Director Antti Ilvessuo had this to say: "You could say I created the riddle, but what I really did was set the rules out. The game was played by the players, the riddle was discovered by them. I just started it. That was one really the key here." He then walked Fatshady through the riddle a few months ago, after which FatShady started the long process of creating this awesome video.

The answer and riddle were thought out like three years ago. Now here is the official answer.

So please sit back and enjoy, help us close the door on Trials HD, and help us get ready for the next chapter in the Trials story -- Trials Evolution, launching April 18.

Well done RedLynx.

Now the never ending question and curiosity of the "Christmas Tree Riddle" can begin.

Good job, everyone, especially FatShady for being the driving force behind the effort to solve the clues! And thanks, ANBA, for an awesome and mysterious riddle that has kept us intrigued this whole time!

So was there a forum member or someone who came closest to producing this correct question/answer?

I admit in some ways I'm a bit disappointed that so many of the clues seem to have such specific answers, but then get lumped into massively broad categories like "people who discovered things" (a group which could contain about a billion people).

In addition, let me be the first to say: as a mathemetician, I strongly disagree with the video's interpretation of the constant 'e':

This number (2.718) is significant because while it is a constant, it lacks a specific and finite answer. It is never ending.
and later

Finally, as with 'e', we know that there isn't always an exact answer. All we can ever do is get infinitely closer to the unattainable answers that we seek.
There are a lot of cool things about the constant 'e', but "lacking an exact answer" is most definitely not one of them.

e (and pi and sqrt(2) and all irrational numbers) DO have exact answers, very well understood by mathemeticians. You are correct, the decimal representations of them can never be written out completely, and irrational numbers (and transcendental numbers, which are a subset of the irrationals) have lots of other interesting properties.

If "you can never write out the whole number" was your clue, you might as well have just used the number 1/3! You can never write out the entire number in decimal representation either, 0.333333333333...

Where were you when I was making the video huh??? http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I will be the first to admit that i have no idea about this stuff and given the very tight time constraints of a video that is intended for a broad audience, I think it got the job done. But im happy to trust you that you are technically correct. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/razz.gif

That was such a fitting tribute to something a lot of THD players that have dedicated so much time to this riddle, you more than did it justice with this video FatShady! I'm actually quite glad that the riddle wasn't QUITE solved before the answer was released. Coming so close without getting to the answer is kind of a great end to this, with the way that the trials community reacted to the riddle relating to the answer itself.

I think FatShady should definitely get to go to the RedLynx studios and be giving a small, hand-carved trophy in a ceremony to commemorate his effort. I know a lot of other people have contributed as well but you can't deny he's been more involved than anyone else!

I knew those had something to those things, 4 on this video I have never seen, which was cool. Off to Youtube to find these new ones for the next 8 days. I do think it would have been a little better if the answer was actually obtainable without extensive help from the creature. I realize the base of people exposed is large but there are tons of factors to come to a conclusion out of all of it. Such as the roman numeral bit/ without a key the answer is not possible such as Egypt hieroglyphs. We "think" we know what they mean but we have no idea if we are actually right. I hope there is something like that in this new one just try to make it possible to at least to come to a conclusion with each clue, leaving it up to the imagination to piece it together. Bravo http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/clap.gif

Edit** I wish I did not see it... The DNA sequence is not possible http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_surprised.gif

With experience it was the first thing I looked for when it said DNA http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/wink.gif I am not down playing the awesomeness of the Riddle. Simply informing....

All DNA sequence's has one common codon. A codon is a 3-chain of amino acids such as TAC, GGT, CGT, so on...... Infinite possible combinations. There is a key factor (codon) that must be present which is the TAC in the code which is not present. The absence of TAC means it is not DNA at all: rather a collection of amino acids. TAC is the "START" line for replication which is required for DNA replication, which pairs with ACT; that is DNA's sequence Reciprocal in 5' to 3' (prime). So even if someone with experience with (DNA, RNA replication) would see this it is not very likely going to be associated with DNA. Not to say it wasn't possible, but unlikely.

I'll fix HappyFlows problem! I have noticed that if you go into the thread through one of the various annoucement sub-forums such as Draw Race 2 Announcements or Trials 2 annoucements then there must be a setting on the forums themselves stating that any topic in these sub-forums cannot be replied too. Which I guess saves the moderators/developers having to tinker with settings when they post an announcement.

Just go to this topic through any sub-forum other than "Announcements" and you'll be fine.

Also FatShady I can't believe you knew! I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO LOOK YOU IN THE EYES AGAIIIN! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/snooty.gif

FatShady: Awesome video!

ANBA: Awesome riddle!

Trials HD Community: Awesomely close! I vaguely remember talk on the Easter Egg thread about not overlooking the journey to focus on the destination or something like that. That is actually sort of the answer to the riddle in it's own way. Although, come to think of it, that may have come from a certain Mr. Shady, who may or may not have known the answer by then. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_evil.gif I digress.

My favorite part of the riddle was waiting with bated breath to find out what was inside the two prize boxes sent to BlueMageFTW and FlipTaco. I have never been more excited to see what was contained inside two mystery boxes sent to video game fans from the video game's creator to provide clues to an extensive, overwhelming video game riddle.

It actually makes me a little sad to know that it's all over, but all the more happy to know that I was a part of it while it was happening.

Thanks Antti, FatShady, and everyone else for the journey!

I think the beauty lies there within. The face value of the answer is "Questions" ... at the heart of it all however is also "Learning"

So long as we don't just say, "Huh, the riddle is solved" and go about our lives then we can continue our search for knowledge. Even in your specific description you are aiding in a deeper understanding of things (that I did not know). The riddle can be declared "Solved" but the way I see it, questions never cease. Learning should always continue on.

I think the only thing that changed here is now we understand what purpose this was ultimately for.

What really lies at the end of the ninja course in Skyway or up above the ground in Extreme Torque? And what about the third box in Extreme Skiing? http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/confused.gif

My favorite part was also waiting for the boxes to be delivered and find out what was in them. This riddle has been awesome with so many parts to it. Everyone involved has been amazing. It was a great riddle, and i would love to see something similiar for EVO, but i wouldn't go as far to say it's the biggest and best easter egg in gaming history. Have you played Nazi Zombies in Call Of Duty World at War and Black Ops? The entire story of that game mode is presented in easter-eggs around the maps. That is amazing.

But anyways. Loved this riddle and i love the answer aswell. It goes well with why i liked Lost. I LOVED the fact that there was so much questions and mind **** 's...

The journey is just as important, if not more important than the goal itself!

weak as hell.

Riddle: A question intentionally phrased to require ingenuity in ascertaining its answer.

There is no riddle, just an idea in someone's head that placing things that 'ask questions' is a riddle. post a hundred pictures of fish and ask "What links all these fish?"... you'd be pissed if the answer was "they are all fish". it's that dumb.

I appreciate a lot of people won't like this my take on things so feel free to flame away, just bear in mind I am as entitled to think it's weak as you are to think it's all kinds of awesome cleverness http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon/smile.gif

Actually I think it was the right time for 2 reasons. Once Evo is out, I doubt there would be much ongoing interest in the riddle. I mean that they guys here would never stop, but outside of the hardcore riddle team, few people would keep track of it..

More importantly, The riddle really was solved. If you look back through my summary post about your last chance to answer the riddle, there are atleast 3-4 comments in there that basically answered the quetsion. So if anything, this video was about confirming what people were already starting to figure out.

As fo a new riddle.. MAN I hope there is one!

I have a question for ANBA:

Are you impressed that people were able to figure out pretty much every single one of your clues? Or did you expect them to eventually get them all? Some were certainly easier than others, but after watching the final video, I didn't see a single one that hadn't already been figured out by someone in the Easter Egg thread. Just curious.

Fascinating stuff - never noticed all that stuff.

My take is more simple - and I'm a real Hitchhikers Guide fan:

"Man didn't come into existence until an organic structure evolved, sophisticated enough to house the human soul - i.e. the brain.

As man evolved, he eventually became able to ask the "big" questions.

But, man still has a lot of evolving to do, before he can answer those questions."

Of course, the common thread is 'Evolution' - less than 24 hours to wait !!!
