I agree 100% !! Even some of the smaller float planes would be cool. Like the OS2U Kingfisher, the SOC, Rufe, to name just a few. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Give me Emily or give me death! I have a Japanese book that goes into detail about the Emily I can only read a little of it, but has some nice cockpit photos, etc.

You guys need to look at the Dev. Updates again. The Emily is already built as A.I.

Don't forget the Short Sunderland for our British/Aussie/New Zealander friends. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I'd appreciate any flying boats, big or small.

I'd like to add earlier types of PBY to this list. But my main wish would be for a workable type of S.A.R. (Sea Air Rescue) mission capability in the campaign game, and it would be even nicer if it were an option with online play.

Won't start the whole list again, but to have a completely different type of game available based on rescuing or capturing pilots would be refreshing. To use these a/c solely as targets, or slow patrol bombers might simply be a little too boring. At best most will just fast forward the patrol to the "best bits". Online these birds have little use, but add SAR and you have a real reason to fly these birds (to keep your pilot reserve up). BTW - this would not require the downed pilot to wait, the routine an be AI on that part.

How 'bout the Spruse Goose?

SkyChimp
06-14-2004, 06:58 PM
No Spruce Goose. It only flew once and wasn't a military plane.

But I'd like to see the Sunderland.

The PBY goes without saying.

It was ment to be military

Howard Hughes "flying boat" was nicknamed "Spruce Goose" after and angry senator dubbed it "the flying lumber yard." The plane was originally conceived as a low-cost way to create aircraft for the war effort. It was constucted entirely of wood (some spruce but mainly birch) and is still the largest aircraft ever built. Unfortunately it took so long to construct it wasn't finished until after the war. It flew once and is now in a museum

I strongly agree. It'd be cool to have ship flotsam, oil slicks and/or aircraft wreakage as placeable objects as well as maybe people in life rafts or floating in their Mae Wests. You could land your PBY(or whatever), a certain distance from them and after a set amount of time(maybe a few minutes?), you could take-off with all of this representing a rescue. To some this might sound boring, but I think dodging enemy patrols and pleading for the people to hurry up and get on board as you spot several enemy planes heading in your direction could spice things up. Maritime bombing, reconnaisance, etc. could make up other missions too. On recon missions it'd be cool for the comp to automatically register what you see once you get within a certain distance(which might also depend on altitude). It could be displayed on the screen similar to the blue messages you get when you destroy a target, except instead it might say something like "Enemy artillary spotted." or "Enemy ships spotted". Of course it could be more detailed and say how many or exactly what types are seen. Even if you don't see the targets yourself, you could assume your co-pilot or other crew members did.

That's indeed what I was thinking off. I especially like the idea of doing the same for ships, flotsam, oil and crews (with or without dingy/sloop) sounds great! It would beeven better if the campaign generator would actually do something with this data. Call it human resource management - safe a good pilot, get him back on the roster.

Or online have an extra pilot on some game types.

Online this could work well, especially with all that sea, the shadowing seaplane could be the required variable to get periodic messages on the position of the enemy shipping.

Isn't that the type that was lost near Fort Lauderdale while it was looking for the disappeared Flight 19? AFAIK it had a tendency to blow up due to high-octane fuel or something like that.

The topic is valid still, but sadly pointless, as there will be no more new flying boats in this sim...

If only we had a cockpit for the H8K1...

I don't see why we need the Do-24K. As far as I know (which isn't much) they were only used to transport civvies n refugees around. But theres a possibility they were used militarily.

My top 2 votes are Emily n Catalina.

Yea I think we're as likely to get the b-17 flyable as we are these large flying boats seaplanes and float planes , they will just say theres no use for them the maps arent big enough and on and on even though every pf map has water and alot of them are mostely water and I think these planes do have a use because most if not all have defencive guns and carry bombs and or torpedoes like the emily

Do-24s only used to transport civvies and refugees???????? HBR, that was during the evacuation of Java in March 1942. Previously, they were extensively used for reconnaissance and bombing attacks on Japanese shipping in the NEI and southern Philippines. They did as much if not more than PBYs did during that same period.
We already have the Emily and a Cat version as AI.

ElAurens

We need the H8K, PBY, and Do-24 as flyables.

AIs are nice and all, but in the final analysis if you can't fly it, it is useless...
