*Channelwood* (Difficulty: Hard)

This is my first attempt at a custom level. It is inspired by the Channelwood Age in Myst.
Easter eggs: 1 hidden area. If you have played Myst or Riven, you should recognize this.

Platinum: 0:45, 0 faults
Gold: 1:30, 0 faults
Silver: 1:30, 20 faults


I reached the object limit and couldn't fit all of my ideas into this track, so I may have to make Channelwood part 2 with the windmill with some sort of switch-based water puzzle, lifting elevators, and the part with planks that raise up to form a platform.

*Downtown* (Difficulty: Medium) Use a 125cc bike.

This level is absolutely massive. Without giving away too many details: You start with a daring leap from a skyscraper before crashing through a skylight window, and by the end you will find yourself speeding through the narrow alleyways down below. This level took me about 2 days to create. The great thing about using room blocks to create scenery is that they don't add to the room complexity. Unfortunately, I had to delete thousands of them, one by one, to make an entire cityscape. Even with room blocks making up the majority of the scenery, I still maxed out on scenery items.

The sequel to Channelwood, based on the Channelwood Age from Myst. I included all of the things that I had wanted to put in the first track: the lower boardwalks, moving planks, the windmill, and a puzzle element at the end.

This level will take you down into the depths of a mysterious cave. The level splits about halfway through, so there are two very different paths to reach the end.

I really like how cavern looks. I am working on something similar. We had the same idea for the mining cart. Triangle signs to get that "V" look. I must say using the glass for the crystals was an excellent idea. I was trying to make gold with metal and yellow lighting but I haven't got that far yet.

I'm not sure if you were after this type of effect but did you make the upper path as a kind of reward? I was planning on doing that with mine. One way is death one way is gold/reward/freedom etc. Even though I love killing the rider in various ways I also like to see him get by unscathed. It does look awesome. Keep it up!

I hadn't really thought of that way, but I guess I sort of subconsciously gave the upper and lower paths a heaven/hell theme, making the upper area more atmospheric and the lower one fiery and treacherous. The upper path started out as an easter egg, since it is harder to reach. It sort of evolved into a separate path as I kept adding to it and still hadn't gone over the object limit.

For a gold object, maybe you could put glass in front of a metal sign and shine a yellow light on it. I'm not sure if that would get the right effect, but it's worth a try.

Thanks. I like to give my tracks a little bit more of a natural setting by avoiding the use of stuff like flippers, flame boosters, and random explosions. I'm working on a track right now that starts off with a downhill truck ride through the woods, and it ends up inside a haunted barn.

Nanner is definitely one of the better ones at custom tracks and hayride really is the icing on the cake.... I love the hayride at the begining and the barn is really fun too.

The theme for this track is sort of eclectic. I incorporated some of the various ideas from my previous tracks to make what is essentially a sequel to Hayride. It starts off with an escape from the upper floors of an old hotel, and the rest of the track covers the cursed grounds of a lake resort.

*Shantytown* (Difficulty: Hard)
-Big Pack DLC Required-

Scale the cliff-side dwellings of a deep grotto to reach the surface.

I had several inspirations for this track: Kakariko Village from Twilight Princess, some parts of Half Life 2 Episode 2, and of course, Myst.
The track goes back and forth several times over the same narrow space, each time going higher and higher. Stacking the scenery allowed for a lot more detail than I expected. I was really surprised at how much I was able to place without going over the object limit.

I thought my last track ended up being a bit too tedious, so I was inspired by some of the awesome tracks in the contest entry videos to focus more on flow and rewarding progression with this one. I just re-released one of my old tracks, Downtown, with some minor changes (like adding about a thousand room blocks) to get rid of some of the slowdown. I'll leave it up for a few days in place of Channelwood.

nice 1 with voodoo3 nanner, you finally got the grass proper. it was a cool effect before but the grey shinyness just ruins it. in this style track is actually looks like grass/branches. shame we cant do longer highly detailed levels like this, maybe in the sequel. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif anyways love the last swing for finish line too, but it was weird that the stairs didnt crumble. i know physics cant be enabled on checkpoint objects but the design there was just a little weird to me, overall sick track tho http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Yep, my DLC track is finally finished and uploaded, and I'm just waiting on them to confirm my submission. I'll make an official announcement and Youtube video after the contest is over, since I didn't want my entry to be so public before the deadline.

About halfway through what ended up in the final track, I hit the object limit and had to start carefully taking out objects to end up with a full length layout, so I spent about twice as long as I would for a normal track, probably around 40-45 hours this time.

BTW, I made this one with the micro donkey in mind, too.

Thanks. I really focused a lot on the flow for those two tracks. My DLC entry took at least 40 hours, maybe 50. A typical track takes about 20-25.

What Can I say about Cavern 2? I have never been so speechless when I've played a track. It is without a doubt the best looking track I have ever seen and I'm so glad it's included in the DLC beacuse I think you deserve it. Awesome work! What is the world record on this track? This track takes place inside the burning remains of an airship at the bottom of a canyon.

Getting up the lift hill to the first checkpoint is the the only difficult part; then the rest is all easy flowing.

Your tracks are extraordinary, all are very cinematic which I love. My favourite being Wreckage, Voodoo 3, Pirates Gold and Shantytown. I spent along time trying to work out how you got that spectacular glowing light in the background on Shantytown, I think I finally worked it out. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

Voodoo 3 is crazy, how you thought of those trees is unbelievable. The driving line was good but I wasn't that impressed with it. But the whole theme is exellent.

Rollercoaster, hmm can't say I have that much of an opinion on it, it was very creative and you done the best I think anyone could do with the current editor but some things are best left until Evo is released so you can really get the theme right. You should definitely remake this track in Evo along with most your tracks but mainly this and Shantytown.

Anyway, you a great designer and I think Pirates Gold was one of the best tracks in the DLC. Look forward to seeing you in Evo.
