View Full Version : Random engine or mechanical failures?

Was in the Gunther Rall thread when a thought occured to me. Does this game model engine or mechanical failures? I remember trying to start my Hurri in I think ExtremeOne's RAF camp. A couple of times it wouldn't start. The reason I thought of this is I've read many times of how pilots would have to abort missions due to engine not starting or aborting after take-off due some mechanical failure or another. If it's not, I think a random failure generator would be a nifty option.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

i think it might, cuase there have been times when im pulling heavy gs in an I-16 or 153, only to have the engine cut on me. usually its ok, but sometimes, even when i havnt been hit, i cant restart the engine.

There was a time in the original IL2 when you would start and the engine would sound coarse... if you took off it would degrade quickly as if it had an oil leak. This is realistic but it happened as much as 25% of the time on a bad day, and it occurred online too. After a bunch of whines on the subject it was patched out as a bug.

^^Yeah I remember that. Its a shame cos that was a nice feature and happened in RL too. Can u imaging waiting half an hour for VEF only to sit on the runway and find your engine wont start lol. Maybe if it was modled for offline it would be cool.

I think this was taken out to but I'd liek to have it back because it was cool and very realistic:

Some planes didn't fly like others, so u could have 3 FW 190 A's in a server and none of them would fly the same or have the same top speed or something. Oleg once said it was because this represented the fact that these weren't planes fresh out of the factory they used in real life. and if you didn't let your engine warm up u would damage it and u'd loose performance, I'd like to have this back because I feel it isn't in the game no more

The I-153,I-16,1939 hurricane,j8a,cr42 all had gravity fed carburators. When doing a negative "G" manuever the carburator would starve for fuel and cut out. They can be restarted with enough altitude and speed.

I didn`t know that! Damn! I would have loved such realistic failures as this. It really makes me wish i`d been around earlier to at least pipe up and say I like it.

How many more realistic WWII flying dynamics have been canned because certain people couldn`t hack it and whined it out of existence? I supposed we had jammed guns too if volent manouevers were made (as in EAW) and that was probably dropped due to whines.

Sorry, I`ll get off my soap box now. My friends say I should be a politician, but I`d be too honest to succeed.

Anyway, I had a failure on the desert map in the engine start of the Hurricane in 2.01... I hope it`s still there...

You can sometimes force FB to do this now

Just switch on your engine/s and then toggle autopliot on and off a couple of times. Now try taking off and the engine will sound coarse... if you takeoff it will degrade quickly as if it had an oil leak. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Doesn't work every time though...

Sorry, just dont understand why anyone would WANT to simulate random mechanical failure. In real life if my car, tv, whatever broke down I would be pretty p***ed off, likewise I would feel the same while flying on my computer. Still if the option was there then all you flying masochists could get exited about how after about an hour flying a really successful mission the engine dies over enemy territory and you get captured. Perhaps Oleg could bring out another expansion pack where you get tortured by the gestapo. He could include some thumb screws, shackles, and instructions on building your own dungeon.

Now thats realism!!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gifIncidentally I understand there are some sites on the web that will provide the above items. But I dont know what they are or where to look http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Over your head and under your feet my friend. Its not the trip itself its the Journey......Blah Blah.

I recall that random spark plug failure was removed when the first patch for FB was released. I would like to see it back.

Thanks for your replies. I was thinking another switch for the difficulty page. And if the engine would run rough you rev up to clear the plugs and it would run right again. Or just on the ground anyway...

I like that, a slight variation on a quote I heard before. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif But yes, if you have to explain to some people WHY we we`d like random realistic faults then it`s a waste of time explaining at all. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Personally thats not my idea of half an hour of my life well spent. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/crazy.gif

But yes very funny so long as it happens to someone else http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

From the 1.11 patch read-me:

"Removed random spark plugs failures on cold engines."

and
"modified engine startup sequence"

There is a lot of hidden complexity in the game. For offline gaming, I would absolutely LOVE having to work through an accurate representation of the more complicated procedures. If you did some things wrong--not checking the instrument readings before proceeding during start-up, or forgetting something in flight such as switching fuel tanks--you'd have an appropriate failure. As I understand it, aircraft commonly had to return to the field because of failures. I'd also love to have to charge the guns before they would fire, and have jamming modeled, from reasons such as weather conditions and reliability of the weapon to hard maneuvers such as SeaFire mentioned.

But these are issues for a true simulation, and not for a game. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Still, it's a kick-butt game! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Just yesterday I pushed the engine in my LaGG-3 (M-105P) hard with over 100% power for short stretches, some stretches longer than others. The battle went on for quite a while, and I began hearing a faint but distinct grinding sound--my engine was "making metal." I didn't notice any huge loss of power, but decided not to push it too hard since I was low on ammo too. I got home safe and sound, and glad I was engaged close to base.

By the way, here's a free tip: in some aircraft--I can think of of the P-40s and Hurricanes--getting hit in the engine can cause the engine to overspeed, which can lead to a fire or explosion. When this happens, kill the engine by turning both magnetos off, it might save your life.

ta 152 is subject to odd failures at speed but what's behind that I don't know.

Normally Spiny Norman was wont to be about
twelve feet from snout to tail, but when Dinsdale was depressed Norman could be
anything up to eight hundred yards long.

THE P-80 has flame outs on a way too regular basis for me. I don't mess with it online but offline it seems to just let the fire go out whenver it has a mind to. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif
