View Full Version : I am creating a new dynamic level. You choose the difficulty

Anba has already made a new easy track (Easy-12: The Arc) for the next patch, and now I am starting to create my own.

I already decided the track to be a dynamic one. The question is: Do you want it to be easy, hard or something in between?

We decided to add a new level category called "Extra" for all downloadable levels, so we don't have to change the achiements all the time. This makes it possible for us to just release new single levels (without needing to patch the game at all).

Jorma also started to learn the level editor, and if everything goes well we have one of his levels in the next version as well.

Awesome news! I can't wait for the next patch. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Also, It's a good idea to add the extra category, because I personally think it would suck if you lost the "Superhuman"-achievement (for an example), because you guys added a new level.

It will be a tricky mixed medium-hard difficulty course then. The level is named:

The Domino Effect

The sad thing is i can't play Trials2SE till i get a new gfx card, i have the money but not the time to get/install it...
The good thing is that... we have some great news here http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif

Anyway, if you were going to ask it before one month i would vote for an easy track without second thought... But now, i found that medium/hard difficulty the best choice (of course it should be a dynamic one http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)..........

Looks sweet!

It looks like a domino game.

You drive on the left lane there?

That looks really cool! Do you take multiple lanes? Or is it linear?

Linear like all the levels. The dominos go in the side of the track... The level is now much more polished and there are now even funnier obstacles later in the level.

And here is the first screenshot Jorma leaked me about his level... He said that it needs a bit polishing still http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

ill tell you something guys, looking at that editor, it looks really like an 'easy-to-use-but-tricky-to-master' editor that, if released to us lot, would definetly see thousands of levels being created!!! http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

"Domino Effect" is now complete!

It's a medium difficulty dynamic track with couple of hard obstacles mixed in. But there is a twist. The level has 3 shortcuts for more advanced players, where you can save a second or two. However these shorcut routes are almost as hard to pass as some obstacles in Inferno http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Only time will tell what routes prove to be the most popular when best players start to frantically race against each other to reach the top spot in the records list.

It's not the worst part. There is a very bad memory leak in the newest editor version. It seems to leak when you undo stuff in dynamic levels. The editor crashed over 10 times today because my memory ran out (and I have 2GB on my home computer).

What are you talking about? It hasn't crashed once with me. Only takes 1.8 GB currently. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif

Well, maybe I should restart it just in case.

The game automatically downloads all downloadable tracks the next time you start it when a new track packs has been released. All new tracks will be added to "Downloadable" track category. The first downloadable track pack is going to be released simultaneously with v1.06 (= next week).

Looks really awsome. Its really fun too see how good the physics is working. And that you have to use it. Can't wait to try out this map. Loved the cement pipe rolling at you in about 1 min into the movie and the one at the end where you have to balance on.

2k3, I don't mean this in any mean way but physique means the form of your body, how well in shape you are, appearance. You mean physics which are what is used in the game. i think that, aswell as the new level, you should try and get the idea you said before about being able to move the rider up and down aswell as lean back and forward. that would be cool and would give the game fresh way to play and more control. http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

Unfortunately free analog up/down/left/right leaning would need us to clear all high score lists and change our replay system (replay data includes now just button press/release codes), and that is something we are not willing to do (and many players would be upset if we did that). Up/down leaning in addition to left/right leaning will be most likely implemented along with full analog leaning (thumbstick), acceleration (left analog trigger) and analog brake (right analog trigger) in the next Trials game. Optional separate back/front brake buttons will be of course also tested (left/right shoulder pads). But I can't really speculate yet about the feature set of a future Trials game. We will implement all features that feel good for that game. The only thing I can say for sure about the next Trials game is that we need a much better tutorial mode for it. Currently many new players find it hard to get into the game.

Domino Effect was made much easier (as requested by ANBA). Now it's pretty much comparable to mid level medium tracks. The shortcut routes are still in the level, and most of them are really hard, so it provides hardcore fans some challenge also.

I'll make you a proper hard Dynamic level sometime in the future.

I am not teasing anyone, it's just easier to take screenshots by using our development build (that includes all editor functionality). And like said earlier, I personally would have released the editor long time ago (before Second Edition launch) if I could have made the decision.

It's only natural that each invidual has their own point of view. Often we programmers want to push as many neat features to the game as possible, without thinking about the possible consequencies. Testing, bug fixing and feature finalization takes considerably more time than it seems. And the company naturally wants to release top quality products. Decisions like this are never easy to make for management point of view. Adding 1-2 months to a 3 month project costs a lot of extra money. A small company like Redlynx has only limited resources, and we never thought Trials 2 was going to be this big. It was supposed to be a small project like all the previous games in the Trials series, but the team worked fantastically together and it become apparent that the game is going to be really good. At the end of the project we actually made a lot of new levels on our own free time at home, because we didn't have any extra slack time at work. The patches after the release (v1.05, v1.06, v1.07) have fixed the all the bugs we made during the development and implemented some new features we didn't have time to implement during the project (but we really wanted to have).

It's the way of the world I guess. Hindsight can be a pain http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
Still, look at this way. You've got a LOT of good exposure with this game, and making good games is how small software companies become big ones http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
Hopefully the coffers will be be fuller for Trials3 (If it gets the go-ahead and you name it that http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif) and maybe we can look forward to an editor then as more time/money may be available.
Well I for one am hoping anyway http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

If you're going to keep releasing new tracks for the foreseeable future I might have to give-in and invest in a copy http://forum.redlynx.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
