I tried Ian Boy's Falco campaign yesterday (couldn't find any decent online action, same as it ever was...) and ran into a bit of a problem.

We sighted enemy bombers and maneuvered into attack position. I did a right bank and a fairly shallow turn....and the engine died. Wha....?

I hit E. The engine came back on for about 3 seconds...and died again. Same thing happened whenever I hit E. This was straight and level. I eventually put down in a field and banged the ship up like a rank dweeb. How embarrassing.

1) What had I done? Had I starved the engine? Flooded it? Oiled it up? This didn't seem like the kind of "negative G" cutout-inducing maneuver.

2) How do you restart from this condition so that the engine STAYS on?

I have noticed that it sometimes tokes a few tries to restart an engine. I was flying the gladiator one night and I did a neg-G-engine-cutoff and it took six tries to get it restarted. Another time I was in a TB3 and hit the wrong key and disabled my engines. I got three restarted but number one took too long and I was thrashed by enemy fighters.

I don't know how accurate this is, maybe someone else can fill us in about it.

Negative gee cutout, happens in I~16, I~153, Hurri and some others I believe. G.50 too. Upside down flying does it too.

Cr.42 takes a while to re~start. Know your engine guages well and pay them attention at all times. Once you get the hang of it, its not a problem.

I find that putting the throttle at LOW and fuel mix LOW (40%) often makes it easier to restart. Also, don't jump on the ENGINE START BUTTON immediately or panicpress it TATATATATATA, that won't help.

also, make sure you gain sped. the faster u go, the easier it gets. if you were lvel, most probably your air speed was below 200Km/h...if you dive, it will help.

Why would you want to lower the fuel mixture? You ALWAYS start with a very RICH fuel mixture to start and take off (which is usually when you start an engine).

As for speed, I didn't want to dive, because I wanted to have alt to either glide home, or to continue to keep restarting. I didn't "hammer on the button", I gave each of 5 -6 attempts a chance to "take".

And as for knowing your engine gauges....what do I look for?

It usually takes me at least two attempts to restart....damm frustrating! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif One time made a perfect bounce on this I-16, Vertical dove from about 1500m above only to have engine quit.. He saw me and then I was toast. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif
Don't have as much trouble with the G.50.

I believe you have to nose plane up (30 degrees) above the horizontal before pounding on the ignite key. It works in the I16 when I stalled to high negative dive. Not sure about the plane you had the problem with but it's a carb fed engine, should be the same.

I would really like to see more planes from the same era. I enjoy the older one most.

Have to admit that i havent looked much, but is there an italian language pack lying around here that i could get?

To restart engine inflight, apply 15-30% power (it varies) then restart. This seems to help it catch better.
