I've never flown online, but I always play with full realism and cockpit on when I play single. I find the fact that people seem to fly without cockpit online is digusting.

Aren't there also blue and red arrows where the enemy planes are to put on. I mean that's wing commander stuff and not in the spirit of a world war 2 sim.

So when I say this: people who fly without cockpit are bloody wankers no matter how good they are, am I right?

Absolutely! How do you feel about trying to make a NachtHexen movie with full realism enabled? First two times up, I didn't even see the bloddy witches in their U-2s. My squad leader is some Hawkeye though, downed both of them the first time up.

I think that you are way overstating your case.

I mean, sure, its harder and more realistic to fly with cockpit on.

But, some of us don't have the money to shell out for track IR and have clumsy hat views that often wind up 180 degrees away from where we want them . . . cockpit off give you some help, as does padlock.

However, I remembed a sim I used to play: F-18 Korea.

Now, there was a view that was EXTREMELY good and well done: basically a padlock from the cockpit . . you hit it and the pilot's head tracks the nearest enemy until it is out off sight (below cockpit also breaks the track). This is a view I would love to see in FB.

Another thought: no cockpit servers everyone has the same advantage. full cockpit servers everyone has the same disadvantage. So, if you get your *** kicked in a no-cockpit server, the same people will likely kick your *** in a full cockpit server (unless play 100% of the time with no cockpit, which I doubt many do.

So in closing, I will say this: I join whatever server has the most people in it and the least lag. Whether it is no cockpit or not makes no difference. If indeed it is o cockpit, I will fly as such because otherwise I have a handicap, and I'm not good enough to compensate for it. In a full cockpit, i will fly (of course) with full cockpit. In either, i can maintain a 1.5:1 kill:death ratio.

Another thing. STFU with your 'holier than thou' attitude.

I fully appreciate the artistry that went into the cockpits, and the first time I fly a new craft I take a look around and get a feel for the environment. After that - since I am not a fighter pilot by trade - I turn it off and get on with playing a game. Its a nice option.

I tell you, Full Real is only real if you have one eye,(2 dimensional vision) wear blinkers to restrict your field of vision to around 20 degrees and have such poor eyesight that you can only make out a screen resolution of say 1024x786 pixels, try getting into the airforce with those criteria, oh yes and how tall are you, think you could fit into the ww2 cockpits, are you colourblind? if the plane crashes in real life would you survive? how about you just purchased a new disk instead eh? small price to pay instead of dying, dont you think? where are the ground crew who helped with warming up the engines, who guided you out the hangars by holding the wingtips? where are they? Get a grip its just a game, a very good one, but still just a game. Stop whingeing, open your own server to your own criteria and let people join you, if you join others then respect their level of realism and keep your trap shut.

you rude, rude man.
and in answer to the question....... it isnt worth the effort

Blah BLAH BLAH Full Real BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Jeez were do they come from first one complains about a skin someone made now some joker is saying if ya dont fly full real your a pansy.

Let me think about this full real in my book is that REAL BULLETS come zipping at you. REAL BLOOD is spilled and you could Likely die and get a FULL REAL burial 20+ feet into the ground.

There now with that said jump off you high horse and fly this GAME the way you want to. Be it SIMULATED REAL or Cockpit off your choice. Just dont tell others how they are supposed to have fun Sheesh

Well I think it´s more fun with the cockpit on, and yes it´s harder to see were your enemies are without the arrows. I think you loose the feeling with the craft when your flying with the cockpit off. Though I think that ikons are good to have, so you don´t shoot your friends!

Different strokes for different folks. I prefer full real, actually, I always fly full real. No speed bar and subtitles. Gets some getting used to, especially when engine is over heating but you get used to it. But there is nothing wrong with flying with cockpit off. Kind of like flying from the nose gunner on an He-111- w/o the arrows od course.

Oh what the hell, I'm bored anyway.

Throw in another line.

I would probably fit in B (according to A ofcourse), I find stalls and cockpits annoying, prefer to have unlimited ammo online, big pointy arrows telling me where to go and I use F6 a lot, even worse, I depend on it.
I have my limits though, I don't like servers with easy gunnery, it takes away the need for that little bit of skill I DO have and turns the game into a series of head-on kamikaze runs.
I love flying the I-153 online to take on the big boys, make them loose energy and then slowly rip them apart. Ofcourse they are crap too since we all play on the same low realism kindergarden server.

Anyway, I like to enjoy myself when I play a game. And anyone who doesn't appreciate that can **** my ***. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I fly with cockpit on and have a key set for icon type 'toggle'......... then have icons on in the realism panel.....by toggling through the various configurations of icon... i like the first one best, which is just the range only .... in the appropriate colour

The no cocckpit puts me off and is open to cheating since I`ll insiston keeping my cockpit. But that`s not the real reason why I keep away...
No cockpit servers have a far WORSE type of player. All they do is fly like nutters, ramming eachother, taking other pilots kills, not appreciating any kind of team work at all. Say anything and you`ll be met by a rude and juvenile response.

First test to anyone: Go on a NO Cockpit server and say Hello or Hi! Wait ONE minute. NO ONE will reply, even though you can see they`re not busy. Then you`ll know you are on a bad server. Find another.

If all you do is play in daisy chains offline against AI and spend an hour bored off your ^%& while flying to a waypoint, I can see how having the cockpit on to keep you company would be nice.

Online though, there is too much fun to be had cockpit on or off. To be a complete ace (like me) you have to master both. Cockpit-off is the purest form of flight. If real aces could fly with the cockpit off, they would too. Why not live their fantasy? It is a game, after all.

I sometimes host cockpit-on with dark range only icons. It's pretty cool. The only problem with cockpit is the solid bars. Real pilots had 2 eyes and could move their heads in 3 dimensions. So not only would they see semi-trasparent cockpit bars when looking beyond them they could shift their head slightly to see beyond them with ease.

This sim needs to adopt semi-transparent cockpit bars before I will take it seriously. It's not that hard to implement. Of course the lazy modelers will tell you otherwise, but it's been done in other sims that are way old. As it is now your view with the cockpit simulates a pilot with 1 eye, and a dog-cone around his head which is fixed to the top of a pole. Good for hardcore sado-maschists but not good for gameplay.

Holy crap Rook, lighten up. It's only a video game!

The problem isn't so much with the cockpits themselves, but rather with the fact that you are trying to simulate flying an airplane with no peripheral vision and no head movement (to see around the posts).

This issue is inherent to the PC flight sim concept itself.

Meanwhile, try to image driving your car by only looking through a monitor in "full real" mode. You would crash pretty quickly.

When flying a real airplane, visibility is far superior to what you experience with cockpits on in this game.

XyZspineZyX

I never use externals for combat if they are turned on. However, if they are turned on, and it's a grass runway. Sometimes i'll look outside the cockpit to find the runway. Once i'm sure where the runway is, I won't use them again.

Trying to see cut grass from uncut grass is hard for my crapola eyes.

95% of people who play this game don't care enough for super realism, I am one of them. I want believable physics and decent damage model. But I could not care less if a little knob is modelled in the wrong spot in the cockpit. I fly online and offline 95% of the time with cockpit off.

Does that make me a poorer player, and less of a sim enthusiast? No. I land and take off with cockpit though....just feels funner.

Trackir probably solves many of the problems regular simmer encounter with obstructed vision, etc.

It is a matter of preference more than anything else. How many of you drive an automatic here? Why not drive a manual, its the "purest" form of driving, no? Oh, and drive a rearwheel drive vehicle to, in snow, thats as pure as it gets.

I often read posts stating that cockpit 'on' is harder. Am I the only one that finds cockpit 'on' easier? When I tried the no cockpit mode, I had a nightmare of a time keeping a solid awareness of what my aircrafts state was at any given moment. In cockpit, I constantly refer to the instruments, the airspeed needle, not only where it is pointing but how fast it is moving... and the fuel guage... how do you know your low if the pit is off? Constantly cycle through the cockpit modes?

I was just wondering... I do better seeing the guages, which is the only reason I use the pit.

I am not as pilot but I do have thousands of hours in the cockpits of many different aircraft. I can tell you that the view in a DC-3 or DC-6 is crap and the same for a 727,737.
The view with cockpit off does not feel comfortable to me and cockpit on feels more right. I am not sure what plane would give you the view that no cockpit does, none that I have flown in. To say that no cockpit is not as good as it would be in a real plane sounds like pure bunk to me.

It's an old and seemingly endless discussion that rarely changes anyone's mind and always promotes fights. Fly the settings you like (though I recommend both camps give the other settings more than a 5 minute try /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) and get over the fact that not everyone likes them.
