Don't think so M8...
This question was raised on adding the P-61 Blackwidow a while back. Modeling in weapons sytems i.e. radars, is too complex for what is in mind for Pacific Fighters.

Did the Dauntless actually have radar? And I thought the Avenger only got radar fit post-war. I hear one of the flyable PBJ versions in the game historically had ASV radar. I hope that means they can do radar in the game...

Some TBMs had radar, serving as airborne controllers for conventional fighters on night CAP. Also, there were some night Corsairs (the only Navy Corsairs to serve on board a carrier in 1943).

TBF's, F4U2's and F6F-5(N) carried airborn radar off of carriers during the war. Richard E (Chick) Harmer led VF101(N) off of the Big E using F4U-2's prior to development of the F6F night fighters. He considered the F4U-2 a better aircraft than the F6F (N) due to it's stability, though it required a higher standard of proficiency. He ended up sending most of his squadrons Ensign's home!

Night radar intercept if at all realistic is probably beyond the abilities and interests (it's really tedious) of MOST of the folks anticipating this game. It would make a great addon.

I think that if they do have the radar, they chould make you move back to the radar operaters area to see it, and after all, the people who dont want to use radar probaly use map icons, so it wont matter. and those that dont use map icons will probaly be the ones to use the radar, so it is a win win kinda.

...there followed one of those moments in history, the sort when the entire earth seemed to stop its spin, hearts paused, and even the people who'd been screaming their loyalty to a man already dead would remember only silence.

some radar positions:

DAUNTLESS
right behind the pilot at the bottom of the cockpit with the screen on top at eye level when the rear gunner turned his seat.

AVENGER
had it's own area and operator(radio) right behind the pilot

etc etc

These lol simmers better start asking how they intend to model fleet defense radar for interception.

i have the impression that eyesight (catalina)was the traditional method of spotting until MIDWAY.from then on radar was taken more seriously for obvious reasons.it would be really much more excitting if we could have it in certain planes.

well, if we do any ASW work in PBYs, we need radar for night actions, as well as the lights they mounted (atleast in atlantic) to spot a Sub after the radar indicated position

EDIT: if we do get radar, do you think that oleg will put out a flyable Uhu for the luft?

I keep using the example of that primitive "landing radar" in the He 111 as tentative proof early-generation radar can be done in the Il-2 engine. But really, I'm not sure that translates into flyable night-fighters. I sure hope it can be done in PF.

If not, my hope is that 1C makes an effort to make radar operable in BoB (e.g. Beaufighter Mk. IF)...

Straight from the horses' mouth: Not for the initial release.

Far too complex for the PF, for now. Possibly--POSSIBLY--for a later patch.

Don't count on it.

Don't need airplane radar. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

Need ship radar to detect enemy plane and tell friendly airplane "go there."

Aside from the limitation of torqueless twins in FB/PF, I wooooood LOVEW to have an He219...one of the first with an ejection seat, the first with UV lighting for instruments...good range, very very high cruise speed...radar, grat firepower...with or without the remote barbettes...a truly wonderful performer that should have seen wide action by early 1944 had not RLM been so....dunderheaded...

Radar should be a simple matter, actually...those types eq with radar should be able to see the planes on the mini map, but perhaps with a "scope" inset, instead of a "map case" inset, and those without radar, not.
shouldnt be too hard to do....
quote:
Originally posted by heywooood:

AI P~61?

AI P~51 already see in the dark.

Lots of talk here now about AI USA energy fighters vs AI Japanese turn fighters. That's nothing compared to the Wailing when Japanese dive bombers drop out of the sky onto USA carriers by surprise, USA decks loaded with fuel, bombs, and USA Corsairs with folded wings.

thats what i had in mind, like in CFS2.i downloaded a mosquito which had a radar by simply dragging the minimap into the monitor in the cockpit,it was fun flying at night hunting germans over Britain

question for you knowledgeable historians:

i notice while reading the battle of MIDWAY that nobody on either side of the battlefield mentions radar wether on the carriers or the scout planes ,can someone enlighten us with some info.
radar was present on almost all the pacific islands, so how come that night sea battle happened outside Guadalcanal at point blank range?
Radar was present and used extensively during the battle of Britain so the technology was well developed by May 1942 but was it present on carriers.
the USN spied on the japs with great success using radio and listening to the enemy round the clock craking codes etc for years but i am unable to understand why radar was not part of the menu.
