The poster? WW2 poster to encourage carpooling to preserve fuel for the war effort. If you're not with us, you're against us...

My God, what a level of detail. Insane!

Thanx for the link!

Cpt.LoneRanger

PS: @Carguy: It means, that it takes a lot more resources if everybody drives for himself instead of joining a car-sharing group. Now we know these single-travellers don't only use more fuel, but also cause traffic-jams, but that was probably not a problem at that time /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Holy sh*t. That model is the most magnificent thing I've ever seen. The level of detail is truly insane. Everything is there - cables, switches, ribbing, firewall, control surfaces, rivets, hoses, screws, panels, etc.. Truly, as others have said, a labor of love. Every aspect of is incredible.

Well there were a lot of posters along a similar theme during the war. If you weren't helping us..you were helping them. I don't think the carpool poster is that obscure...

Makes me want one.

But with over 6000 hours (at dentists rates), the labor alone puts it at about $500,000! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I could buy a real warbird for that!

lol...That's the same logic I try to use on my wife. It doesn't work with her either. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Hmmm...it seems I can`t find a link between forest fire and axis` victory.I heard Japanese breeding fleas with all kinds of diseases but I definitely don`t get the first poster.

Well besides military structures off the top of my head I recall that PT boats were made of wood as well as gliders. After googling I see the Curtiss C-76 Caravan medium military transport was an all wood aircraft. I am sure there are many more.

Amazing detail. I wouldn't have that kind of patience.

carguy,

All those posters make sense to Americans. You don't have to understand them, as they wern't made for you.

Re: Forest Fires.

I think the idea is that wood is a valuable material for building and for fuel. If you're carelessly burning acres of it through carelessness, then you're hindering the war effort ...

There's also the consideration that lots of manpower is needed to fight forest fires which also hingers the war effort, especially if you're calling in military forces to help put the fires out, as was the case a few years ago in Montana when several forest including the Bitterroot Mountains area were ablaze and the National Guard and 82nd/101st Airborne were brought in to fight the fires.

BTW, has anybody heard about a very recent alleged Al Queda plot to set simultaneous forest fires throughout the Western United States? Same idea here, that the economy would be damaged by all the destruction.

There's a good book by Bill Maher (spelling?), the "Politically Incorrect" show guy, that parodizes WWII posters like these by making them modern 'war on terrorism' posters. The cover is the car poster above but with Osama bin Laden in the passenger seat. Same headline except 'Hitler' is replaced with 'Osama bin Laden.' The updated poster's message (that America's gluttonous appetite for petroleum causes it to become deeply involved in Middle Eastern politics) is slightly different than the WWII version, when fuel was rationed for civilians while most was appropriated to the military to fight the war -- civilians selfishly wasting fuel at home cheated the war effort. Not to mention that more rubber, oil, parts, etc. is used when more motorists are consuming them.

The wartime posters are amazing to see...all nations put them out, and they can be chilling. Perhaps it's harder to "get" the carpool one now that no-one thinks anything of driving around. Pre-war, only 10% of american families had a car, so to waste a luxury like personal motor transport was tantamount to aiding the enemy.

The Germans made some incredible material during the war, including a fake issue of "Life" magazine, which had the same cover as the real copy, showing the crew of a B-17 bomber posing for a picture.

Once inside however, the German version showed lots of dead aircrew killed by falling from 20,000+ feet, along with casualty figures for the particularly bad missions like Schweinfurt. The Germans managed to airdrop thousands of copies over USAAF airbases and adjacent towns in England.

Do a search for old posters and you'll be well rewarded with an interesting night's look back into the war years. Besides, it might just prompt you to plant a Victory Garden and start carpooling /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
