Anyone here played this game? It's out for PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. It's not a flight simulator in the mold of Il-2, but more of an arcade simulator with flight simulator elements.

I own it for my PlayStation 2, and it's one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played. It has a very engaging storyline, great graphics, good sound, and a great selection of airplanes.

You can fly the following airplanes:

Hawker Hurricane Mk.I
Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V
Messerschmitt Bf-109E
Mitsubishi A6M2 "Zeke"
Lockheed P-38F Lightning
North American P-51D Mustang
Messerschmitt Me-262A
Gloster Meteor Mk.III
Fairey Swordfish Mk.I
DeHavilland Mosquito FB.IV
Focke-Wulf Fw-190A
Curtiss XP-55 Ascender
Northrop XP-56 Black Bullet
Chance-Vought XF5U-1 "Flying Pancake"
Ilyushin Il-2m3 "Sturmovik"

Those listed above are available for the single-player campaign as well as for two-player versus/challenge modes and single-player Instant Action. The following are available either for Two-Player, Instant Action, and in some cases certain campaign and/or single-player challenge missions:

Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat
Douglas SBD Dauntless
Douglas TBD Devastator
Curtiss P-40B Tomahawk
Messerschmitt Me-163B Komet
Heinkel He P1078
Dornier Do-335 "Pfeil" (Arrow)
B-17G Flying Fortress (You can controll the ball turret)
Junkers Ju-87B Stuka
Junkers Ju-88

The Xbox version also comes with the Chance-Vought F4U Corsair, and if you have Xbox Live I believe you can download the Kawasaki Ki-61 "Hien" (Allied Name "Tony"), the Macchi MC.202 Folgore, and the Heinkel He-162 "Volkjager" (People's Fighter). Each of these planes also comes with a new mission as well as new camo patterns for some of the other planes in the game.

All in all a pretty solid package. The Il-2 missions on the Eastern front a lot of fun.

the sounds is great but graphics are shmidt like its fms it does have some very cool damage fx, ship and bridge destruction secondary explosions which looks nice, its basically an arcade kids game which is very action intense. It is fun for a couple days but then it gets boring.

check it out its fun, I bought it for pc. I been buying flight sims since a kid and pretty much had them all missing a couple.

it is a very good game, instense action, in typical Lawerce Holland's style (i.e. X-Wing). However, the graphic is not up to today's standard, and I am disappointed to see that there is no cockpit view...

Crimson Skies is a way better game! The graphics, the fun, the commentary, the flair. Almost like Indiana Jones in the skies. AND, it has a cockpit view!

PLayed it,completed it,pretty good game for an Xbox/PS2,pretty crappy FMs,can't do barrel rools,no cockpit view if you go upside down after half a loop, and an enemy climbs in front of you, your plane turns faster up-side down then theirs does right-way up http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Played it as a rental. Gave up after realizing I could hold down the 'slow mo' button as long as I liked for accurate shooting.

in fairness you can do the slo-mo thing in sturmovik if the fancy takes you, lucasarts just gave you the option

but i think its unfair to compare them, they have different aims as pieces of software.

if the box art had 'the most realistic sim youll ever fly!' emblazoned across the front i might have issue with that but its an arcade game, like crimson skies. tho i thought crimson skies was more fun, the customization, zeppellins, crazy planes, all good unself-conscious fun

SWON pissed me off. It's bad even as a joke of a twitch-arcade game, let alone an immersive WWII air-combat experience. I didn't even pay for it (borrowed from a friend) and I wanted my money back! To even invoke the great SWOTL name and then make an abomination like SWON is unforgivable. Someone deserves to be kicked in the crotch repeatedly for screwing up this fine lineage.

I agree totally with Butcher. I DID buy it, and after 5 minutes of ridiculous gameplay I shut it down, angry that I had been taken. It is a bad joke as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with Butcher to. I bought it.........played it for 20 mins and took it of my hard drive. An FPS of the skies. Couldnt even get any real fun out of it.

What exactly were the last three of you looking for?

It was exactly what I expected, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you wanted a flight sim then the three are you are idiots.

If that wasn't the case then do go into detail about how bad it was....

i.e. reasons why?

I'll give you one free pass on the menstrual "idiot" remark and refrain from asking you to shove your SWON box up your *** sideways and get back with us about how good it feels. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

(Nevermind, if you're going to "almost" call someone an idiot, you'd think that perhaps at least the sentence used to state as much would be correctly worded, no?)

Just in case you missed it, I said:

It's bad even as a joke of a twitch-arcade game

It was repetitive, dull, weak, boring and nothing more than a "shooting gallery" with planes.. it reminded me of a bad imitation of X-wing vs. Tie-fighter (which, ironically you can aparently "unlock" as part of the game).

I've had more fun playing various stupid internet flash-games than I did SWON.

There are plenty of people that think it sucked.

Good for them.

You aparently loved it.

Good for you.

Now, go have a cookie.

Best,

~T.
