sorry I am posting this now - I have been out of town and not near a computer... so this is the first time I've seen the most recent update. They don't have anything but 'Derby' and 'Nascar' in Louisville KY... But I did win a few $$ at Churchill Downs http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

oh yes, Heywoooood loves the ponies. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

LOL ! Pardon me for hijacking your thread for a moment, heywoooood, and turning it into a horse racing thread -- do you think we'll see the Triple Crown won this year ? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just curious why you started another tread instead of replying to an existing thread on the same subject? Oh well. I'm not the thread police.

At first I thought this thread was about some bizarre Monday update I must've missed.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

Is there a horse racing sim? Well, there should be.

"First, let me say that I am one of the "true believers" of Oleg et al as the Messiah of the flight sim world, and I'm not embarrassed at all to be called an IL-2 fanboy. Secondly, I'd like to say that all the screen shots of PF that I have seen so far have absolutely knocked my socks off. I can't wait. And thirdly, I realize that PF is still a work in progress, so these comments aren't a whine, just questions about what we're seeing so far.

1. It looks like the Corsairs are spotted for takeoff way too far aft. I don't have the stats of all the CV's committed to memory, but I think that the deck lengths for the Lex and an Essex class are not too far apart. I've seen many, many pictures of airgroups spotted for takeoff on an Essex class ship where the fighters were sitting just about abeam the island to begin their deck run. I only bring this up because I'm concerned that things such as wind over the deck or ship speed won't be sufficient for a deck run starting as far forward as the island.

2. In the shots of the arrested landing of the Corsair, two things stand out in my mind. First, there is no barrier wires showing, and second, it looks as if the pay out of the pendant is way too much. I know it's not unusual to see that much strung out along the angled deck of a nuc today, trapping a 30,000lb jet that has got his throttles up to max, but it sure looks like it's too much for a WWII era fighter. You'd have to catch the first or second wire in order to keep from hitting a plane spotted on the elevator abeam the island!

Again, I fully realize that these pictures are of a work in progress, and I am not whinning here. Just bringing up some points that might have been overlooked by the developer. Just trying to help, is all.

Lastly, I'd just like to publicly thank Luthier for taking on this project. Were it not for him, I doubt that we'd ever see carrier ops in one of Oleg's sims until sometime way in the future. So, THANKS !! Be sure I'll be voting with my wallet when the time comes."

A really shameless way of bumping a previous post of mine that I fear was lost in the weekend shuffle. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif My appologies Heywooood

Razor is very, very correct. Arresting gear-(5 short wires, 6 long wires, and 7 barracades wires abeam the island structure). Run-out on U.S. WWII carriers was no more than 200'. Aircraft didn't even make it to the island structure on a successful arrestment (trap). Barracades are rigged at the first set of 5" gun turrets aft of the island.
BTW, That dust trail effect we saw from tires on the deck during run-out has got to go. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif No dirt on CV decks. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The Lexington class (Lexington and Saratoga) were the longest flight decks in the fleet. The Essex's were a tad shorter as the second longest class.

Flt dk lengths:
Lexington class 866 ft long
Essex class 862 ft long.

S!

Razor - no worries, I am not the proprietor of the thread. Although I have seen ppl take ownership of them and become irate when the discussion veers.. not me - I am intrigued by the twists and turns they take as others weigh in.

I happen to agree with both of you and I especially appreciate the way you present your concerns.. lets face it - we all have various issues or concerns about the sim and the way some few things are represented (we all know what they are), but with such a gigantic undertaking as this, some details are either going to be overlooked or presented early on in developement with the understanding that they will be modified or removed later on, before release of the final version. And even then - more changes are made.
The developers have said themselves that they get ideas and take heed to some of the suggestions and concerns that are raised in this forum. We have seen fixes in FB that we can point to as examples of this. But I do feel that the way we make our points has something to do with whether or not we are taken seriously here. We all want what we want and we all want to have our voices heard... and so do the developers. Thats why things like the muzzle flashes etc. may never change... lets face it - if I were Oleg and I wanted big Hollywood muzzle flashes you can bet your sack there will be big, Hollywood muzzle flashes.. but there have been many concessions made by 1c to appease their customers and for that I am 'Fanboy Bandwagoneer Especial' http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif
