I am at the Japanese I-SDF trying to hack the Retinal Scanner to get into the large server room just before the War Room.
I can click twice but after that the game will not let me click again.
The game won't let me click a 3rd or 4th time to select more numbers when I hack it.
I backtracked and was able to hack a computer I passed up earlier in the mission.
Hacking is not a problem but apparently this Retinal Scanner cannot be hacked or I missed something someplace.
I have been using this walkthrough: http://www.ign.com/wikis/tom-clancys-splinter-cell-chaos-theory/Walkthrough
I restarted the mission and did EVERYTHING including hacking a computer.
I KO'd all the guards and interrogated them when applicable.
I still can't hack that Retinal Scanner.
Is the game borked or what?
Any advice, suggestions or other help would be useful and greatly appreciated.

That was the point! That terminal should be hard to hack, that's why it gives you only two tries (little padlock has a number near it). When you click at numbers, you just fix them, but it's possible to figure out the right IP in the left column and choose it without fixing all these numbers. Just remember them and choose the right IP yourself.

Moreover, difficulty level affects the hacking, so on the highest difficulty it's very hard to hack this terminal from the first try or without using quicksave/quickload because you can't fix numbers at all. For example, look at this walkthrough (http://youtu.be/xDWadWHa3Qo?t=11m50s) (11 min 50 sec), Centerstrain hacked this retinal scanner, because he saw all the right numbers (XXX.XX.10.XX, then 193.XX.XX.40 and XXX.68.XX.XX), so he chose 193.68.10.40 manually. You can also see that all IPs are arranged in ascending order of magnitude. That's why that wasn't so hard.

Are you saying I have to click the padlock to unlock more clicks?

I'm saying you need to choose the correct CODE in the left part of your hacking device and click on it. Rewatch that moment (http://youtu.be/xDWadWHa3Qo?t=11m50s) again!

In that moment player sees different glowing parts of the correct code.
XXX.XX.10.XX
193.XX.XX.40
XXX.68.XX.XX

So he got the whole code (which is 193.68.10.40) without clicks and chose it in the left part of the hacking device.

So in your case, you can spend two clicks, but figure out the rest two numbers and the whole code yourself, like he did.

Either I missed something or my 50 year old tri-focal eyes are just too slow to see what he did. :(

And there are people who want hacking back :)

I think, there are two problems. First one - you don't understand Chaos Theory hacking really well. Second - that video walkthrough was taken from console version of the game, so there are no mouse cursor, probably that's why player's actions aren't so obvious for you, and you didn't notice how he moved his cursor in the left part of the hacking device to pick the correct address.

http://faqsmedia.ign.com/faqs/image/ssct_hacking.jpg

When you lock numbers in the right part of the hacking device, you just filter all available addresses in the left part. For example, in the screenshot above the player already clicked on 68 and 30, that's why his hacking device filtered two possible addresses (194.68.30.30 or 194.68.30.40). So the player could choose the correct address from these two. He just need to wait a little to see other two glowing numbers - the 1st and the 4th one - and choose the right code between them. If his device will show him the 4th glowing 30, he will know that the correct address is 194.68.30.30 but he could choose it in the left part without locking numbers.

So the most important thing you need to understand, to successfully hack anything you don't need to lock numbers at all. You just need to remember them all. Let's watch another video from PC. Here it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1I_VWHGm28M

Watch his hacking attempts (http://youtu.be/1I_VWHGm28M?t=9m49s) very carefully. This is the highest difficulty level, that's why he doesn't have lock spots and enough time to hack, and everything is happening too fast. Basically he's trying to notice and remember all glowing numbers. This is his successful hack (http://youtu.be/1I_VWHGm28M?t=10m05s) (10 min 05 sec). He saw all glowing numbers 194 and 69, then 40, then 20, so he figured out the right code - 194.69.20.40 and then he just clicked on it in the left part of the hacking device. You need to do the same thing.

I watched that hack several times until I figured out how he did it.
I managed to hack it but it took several tries.
Thanks a million for that video.
