Voted La5 because I'm a big fan of Lavochkins work.

I won't choose neither, but because of no particular reason.

I fly what i want, not what other idiots want me to.
If they complain, i'l do what i have done for the last three years in those situations, use a pink skin filled up with the word n00b all over it, and then i'l hunt down the person or persons who complained.

I'm no sheep, i'm a shepperd.

Yak9U because of bulletproof wings.

I feel more comfortable flying the La-5fn than the La-7 in the first place!

from the Hundred Years war to the Crimea, from the lance and the musket and the Roman spear, to all of the men who have stood with no fear, in the service of the King~ Clash

The 9-U because it's suppose to be the best Yak of all.

I chose the Yak-9U, not only because I think it looks better but because I like its flight characteristics better.
I have to be honest and say that I don't fly these planes on a daily basis, not even weekly. I mostly fly them because it's good to know what my adversary is capable of. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
But the Yak-9U is no doubt the best looking VVS fighter!

When it comes to aircombat, I'd rather be lucky than good any day!

I've said it in the past and I agree with Robban, the Yak-9U is one of the best looking planes of WWII. I would take the Yak-9U and fly it like a 109 but the 9U is a late '44 plane while the La-5FN is a mid to late '43 plane. Yaks climb doesn't fall off as quickly either and the 9U is a fast aircraft. Both were great planes, no doubt.

9U, Fast, good climber and turner and just feels more agile then La series...which it was.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

I`m an La5f to La7 fan. I think the LA5fn`s the best one. It`s funny but I`ve not had the chance to fly the LA5`s for months, flying most coops and VOW/VEF`s tend to mean I fly mostly the I16s, Laggs and Hurris. I did recently start flying the LA5f in my offline Campaign and it`s still a very nice plane.

I would certainly not say they`re UBER anymore, especially when compared to the old days...

What Zen said and then some. The LA5FN took a lot of damage when I flew it in the original IL2 and it could still make it back to base 8 times out of 10. While the Yak 9U is nice, it seemed 'heavier' than the LA series and doesn't turn at low speed as well in my opinion. For FB I still prefer the 5FN over the 7 just for a challenge - lower top speed and less ammo mostly.
I wonder why the LA-9 (1945) hasn't reared it's head for the Aces pack?

well ...............

the LA5-FN is way more deadly than the Yak-9U

if the Yak-9U performed as it is supposed to do in-game then id have that

BTW the Yak-9U was one of the last Yak prop fighters made & it had another armament fitted as well during its lifetime

namely a 30mm cannon in the nose

we wont ever get the Yak-3U in FB & thats a good thing too IMO : ))))

I'd like to fly a Brewster first. Then the La is my choice, such a pleasure to fly (on the sim).

Gimme the Yak-9U with the La-5FN gunsight.

02-20-2004, 05:17 PM
La-5FN because Kozhedub and Pokrishkin flew it.

Plus I like its better high altitude performance over the Yak-9 series.

After experimenting with both back-to-back, I have to say: gimme the Yak-9U. The LA-5FN's twin 20mms had more kickback but seemingly less punch than the Yak's twin 50 cals and single 20mm. And the Yak feels a lot more stable (that heaviness that others described) without being a slow turner.

La5FN coz I've never come to terms with any of the Yaks. It doesn't seem to matter how much I fly them, I just never click with them.

I flew the La5FN, when I was new to IL2. I soon realized, that it was the most easy to fly and most durable plane in IL2, so I soon switched to other a/c.
The wooden tail of the LA is still not simulated. I hit an LA with 8 30mm shells from my P39 from dead six and it still kept flying...

Besides that, it's really boring to see everybody flying around with La's on every single dogfight server with free a/c choice...

That's verrrry interesting.

I have done 48 tests of this - 37mm T9 vs La-5F rudder/tail section.

There were precisely two reactions of this, ever.

1. Two hits required. First hit removes rudder control surface, and causes the engine to trail thin grey smoke. Edit: second hit completely obliterates the target with FB's enormous fireball explosion.

2. Tail section aft of the cockpit is completely removed.

Scenario 1 happened in 3 of 48 tests and from Arcade Mode appears to occur only when the shot hits at the extreme bottom edge of the control surface, and then burrows through into the engine below the pilot. Scenario 2 was by far the most common.

Do you have a track to go with this entertaining story?

Was this online?

Haha, This is priceless. Can you imagine a WW2 pilot's account of his A/C ...

I prefer the Yak-9U over the La-5FN. The 9U is better at diving and energy attacks than the FN is.

I've never had any trouble dispatching either the La-5FN or the Yak-9U since the 1.21 patch. Previous to that I did see some strange stuff from time to time but I think that may have been my aim. Since I'm normally hitting these guys with 2xMG151/20's I don't see any problems.

While we're on the subject...I'd like to make some semi-historical missions with both of these aircraft. Does anyone have any good Eastern Front sites that go over some of what happened during the Air War?

I really enjoy the Yak 9 due to it's great turning, nice guns, and the balance of a down and dirty dogfighter. Although I don't fly them much anymore but I would choose the YAK over the LA
