View Full Version : Flag Placement

So this is a minor thing, but it has been bugging me. when I first saw the trailers for the game, I was ecstatic that the flag was in the historical accurate placement of being attached to the end of the Spanker sail. But when I saw some game play videos I was dismayed to find that in the actual game the flag was moved to the annoyingly prevalent but inaccurate position atop to mast. Does anyone know why they decided to do this? I know it's not a big deal, and wont effect game play at all. But I would prefer the flag to be where it's supposed to be.

Honestly think it's because of the objectives wher eyou have to steal the flags.

I suppose... but there are other flags that went on the top of masts, like the Pendant, or, in the case of some pirates, a smaller version of their main flag, often times the prototype that they used to figure out the design

Hollywood influence likely. Most American movies I've seen with ships in them tend to have the main flag on the mast, not the smaller flag. Pirates of the Caribbean was notorious for wrong flag placement if you want to be technical. Can't remember the last naval movie I've seen, but I haven't really seen many movies in general as of late. Last one naval one I saw that was semi-realistic was Master and Commander with Russell Crowe and I got bored halfway through so never really finished it.

Rewatching that trailer made me realize the bar fight wasn't too accurate, either. A glass bottle is incredibly hard to break unless it's already cracked or thin. Hollywood uses sugar glass because it's easy to break and less likely to hurt the stuntmen. Most people can't take a normal glass bottle and shatter it the way Edward does on the one guy's head. The poor guy would be more likely to have a concussion and a massive bump where the bottle hit, but changes are the bottle would still be intact. But that's another matter. So Hollywood influence again. Hollywood's made us forget what's realistic and what's not such as shooting someone and watching them fly across the room despite that not actually being realistic.

Could also be an animation thing as well as blocking your view from behind when you drop the fire barrels, etc. My bet is it probably just interfered too much with naval combat. Made it too hard to aim from behind or something.

Or perhaps because they already had the ships in AC3 animated without the flag on the back, they just worked off those rather than putting the flag in the right spot. The trailer is CGI so wasn't in game footage. Models used there are completely different from what's in game.

Honestly both of those are reasonable answers. and it's really a shame if those are the actual ones.

Yeah, I know. it's just one of those things, like I know I would enjoy it more if I wasn't constantly aware of the flag being in the wrong place. I image I'd accept it better if they hadnt gotten my hopes up with the trailer, prerendered though it may be, and if there was... ANY other game with tall ships in them that had the flag in the right place.
