View Full Version : Does the IL2 Stumovik have a place in multiplayer???

I will be buying the FB and expansion when released. As of now I am still playing the demo version.

Question: Does the IL2 Strumovik stand a chance in multiplayer or is it mainly used just in single player missions against ground based targets?

Anyone fly the IL2 in multiplayer?

Also, what Italian planes are flyable in FB and the Pacific Fighter expansion?

Hi,

Quite a few people fly the Il-2 in multiplayer and have some success with it, particularly on early war maps. The early versions of Il-2, in particular, are often used to good effect in furballs as their handling is reasonable.

Also, for Co-ops or DF servers where some teamwork is in evidence, Il-2s are normally protected by escorts.

Cheers,
Norris

Its used alot in coop missions too. Just rememeber, pretty much everyone that plays online has the latest version (AEP 2.04 i think) So if you want to play online, you better get them all. I guess it will be the same when PF comes out. I know I'm in on it when its released

I like using the IL-2 on multiplayer maps with ground and/or sea targets.
The RCAF_FB server is a good example. A IL-2 armed with the Russian "BFR's" and the PTAB-25's, can usually net you three (3!!) ship kills in one sortie. It is fun to see the Fighter jocks get shot down because they forget that the Sturmovik has teeth at both ends!!

In early war co-ops and dogfights an IL2 will do more than hold it's own air to air. Of course - if your opponent is in a fighter and is very good he should win - but that will apply whatever plane you fly and he may run out of ammo before he gets you down.

However with the late war planesets there are planes with 30mm cannon like KIAs and 109Zs. These can take out an IL2 with a single burst avoid games that include stuff like that.

Always remember an IL2 can kill ANY opposing plane if you catch it on the ground.

If the co-op or dogfight does not explicitly ban vulching - it's open season - have fun.

When you buy the sim buy this one http://www.ebgames.com/ebx_assets/product_images/241057.jpg[/url] and then go to the updates page for Forgotten Battles and get patch 2.01 and 2.04. This will bring you current. Hit the Sturmovik Essentials link in my sig to find Hyperlobby which is where most of us go to fly and also while you are at it if you dont have a comms program get Teamspeak2 or Ventrillo.. actually I recommend both as they are the most common ones. I personally find dogfight servers to be boring after a while unless it is a scripted server which is more like a coop (cooperative) mission.. where everyone cooperates to achieve a common goal (take out the ground targets, intercept the bombers, CAP etc). You might also want to add the Essentials thread to your favorites so you can go through the links there. Lots of good stuff. Welcome aboard.

Hi,

Whilst on the subject of scripted dogfight servers, the UK-Dedicated (www.battle-fields.com (http://www.battle-fields.com)) server runs mostly early war maps which are scripted. Quite a few people fly the Il-2 for precisely the reason that you are unlikely to be blasted out of the sky with a couple of passes of mk108 or similar (although, conversely, you are relatively safe vs the 109F2 15mm pea shooter!).

Cheers,
Norris

It's highly survivable and competitive. Perhaps a wee bit too much so.

Provided you take care in when you try to use it as a fighter, and when you use it's extraordinary strike capabilities, you should do well online groundpounding in a Sturmo.

Nothing else in its category can compete with it.

Sorry, I feel safer in a P47 any day.

I sometimes fly the Il-2 in multiplayer. Frankly, with all that armor and the decent gunner, it's the only thing I stand a chance in!

Glad you feel that way LStarosta.

As I'm always going to be behind your beloved Jug, I won't have to worry about getting zapped by an AI tailgunner.

hm
well the p47 and p38 are good attack also, and the germans got the bf110 and fw190
u CAN do well in dogfight servers, but depending on planeset.

i think the p38 and p47 are better vulching aircraft thank il2 cos of extra speed. mind u im awful as a fighter jock in p38 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

the il2 tail gunner isnt much of a threat tbh
not ai anyways.

btw in a coop last nite, a stuka rear gunner damaged my il2 in 1 burst
he got a cannon, a elivator and fin, my oil cooler, AND did level 3 damage to my rear fuselarge
stuka survived quiet a few hits from my 23mm's and mg's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif

dont you hate it in a co-op when you think its a crappy AI gunner or even the gunner is dead and its actually a real person being cagey and waiting for a good shot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

the AEP IL2 Sturmovik is nothing like the FB v1.0 IL2 Sturmovik

way less tuff
