View Full Version : Have the Pacific Itch. If CFS3 is not worth it, is CFS2?

I have a sudden itch to play the Pacific theatre, I want to fly zeros, I want to bomb carriers!!
Seriously, I hear that CFS2 is based on the Pacific theatre. Is it worth getting CFS2, despite the somewhat dated graphics? Will I be dissapointed after being spoilt by AEP? Probably.
Or should I just keep twiddling my thumbs and wait for PF? The wait is killing me. Tic, Toc, Tic, Toc.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

For what it cost now a days CFS2 is still well worth the price, and concidering the hundreds of addons available to enhance your enjoyment of the game....it will always be on my hard drive even after Pacific Fighters is released...
CFS3 now thats a horse of a different color,Its already collecting dust on my closet shelf.

The plane models (external, at least) are some of the best that you will see out of a box with the MS logo. Carrier landings are a sheer BLAST! I enjoyed the sim, and wish that the stuff on the ground looked half as good as the planes . . . still WAY better than CFS3 for gameplay.

CFS2 would be a good buy. And the community is top notch. If ya get it visit some of these sites and be amazed at the quantity and quality of addons and such.

CFS2 is a blast to play.

Like you say, it's fairly dated now but fun is fun.

Well worth the minimal amount it would cost to buy now.

24 beers in a case.
24 hours in a day.
Coincidence...I think not !!!

its a great game with the following mistakes:

collide is too easy

gunnery is too easy

it has no stall sound

doesnt have mouse view or trackir

i really enjoyed bnz with my f6 aginst zeros in this game

i liked cfs2 more than aep, only the original il2 and european air war were better than cfs2,
I would say is the third best simulation ever(in my ranking aep would be after cfs2)

Have not played it since I got the original Il-2 Sturmovik lo, these many years ago, BUT...I enjoyed it a great deal, and found that using the landing tutorials (particularly the carrier landing with a Wildcat) made landing the Bf-109 in Il-2 relatively carefree.

Given the upcoming Pacific Fighters from 1C, though, do you really want to spend the money now?

cheers

I would'nt bother if I were you. After IL-2:FB you'll be dissapointed. Just grab all the IL-2:FB patches and play with the mimited Pac planeset until Pacific Fighters is released.

I enjoyed CFS2 but, after IL2 I can´t get the "flying" feeling when playing it.Just feels like you floating around in a way? Maybe I should reinstall it and try it out again.

cfs3 has all the usn and japanese planes, they also have online carriers

www.avhistory.org (http://www.avhistory.org)

the carriers i think www.netwings.org (http://www.netwings.org) or www.sim-outhouse.com (http://www.sim-outhouse.com) has, theres also new water fx addons a bunch of great free stuff for cfs3

CFS2 was good in its time and too a point still is. Its big plus is its open architecture and the availability of thousands of free add ons, many of the more recent ones in particular being high quality (eg Andrew Wei's P51) - but you need to be prepared to spend a LOT of time downloading planes, effects (the stock ones are very basic) and terrain (if your system can handle it there are some great high res terrains available for virtually anywhere you can think of, some nice terrain repaints plus lots of high detail airfields for the pacific and for europe.) I uninstalled mine because with all of the add ons it had grown to 8 gig on my hard drive and i wanted the space. Biggest negative in my view is the flight model - pretty ordinary by comparison to IL2. Never the less I sometimes miss being able to go for a buzz over a substantial part the real world, rather than something which is either a tiny map or clearly fictional

Sorry to correct you Raaaid,
Collision can be fixed, by reducing the range by HALF, you collide far less now..(it's somewhere on the net, this fix)

A stall sound is there but it sounds LAME, just like all other ingame sounds.

My advice: CFS2 is a really great game as long as you mod it heavily, add 1% Flightmodels from AVHistory (http://www.avhistory.org), add effects by Ghostpony, Nibbio and Nanni - those are the best.
Be sure to mod or add MANY soundpacks, for the engines, weapons and all other sounds,
Visit Simviation, Flightsim.com, Fightertown and Simouthouse alot to find the latest models and fixes.
CFS2 offers alot, but also requires alot to get it right.

I just uninstalled my copy because the game caused my RAM Memory to overload while flying vs only 5 planes at max. (My pc is old) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

As far as i can tell, CFS2 is by far the best of all MS Combatflightsim series. Only mapmaking is a real PITA.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Due to these RAM overloads - as the guys on Simviation forums called it - i've gone over to IL2 Sturmovik and stayed...but that took a LONG while http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I recently rebought CFS2 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It is better than i remembered it but after a couple of hours i've gone back to IL-2 "permanently"

CFS2++++++++ great pacific campaigns, very professional product, fantastic graphics, with mods the game becomes 100% better - torp/bombers etc.

CFS2-------- flight model is "UFO" floater, gunnery is probably too easy and "laser like", AI is not varied in its moves and seems to have a power advantage at low speed maneouvers, AI sometimes goes dumb and will not attack targets, Wingmen hardly ever obeys players attack commands.

Bottom Line: CFS2 is fantastic for a pacific flight experience from a single player perspective (no decent wingmen & dodgy AI) with an "lite" gunnery and AI models by IL-2 standards.

I once liked it, but with PF only 6 months (or so) away, I'll wait and continue to revel in FB:AEP until then.

When is the slated release date for PF? I hope 1C and Ubi don't do the HL2 thing. I've been waiting for that (and Doom3) for ages.
